Review of Vicks BabyRub

My kids got many colds this year. Just yesterday, my 10-month-old son got sick -- AGAIN! With the recall of several over-the-counter cold medicines for kids and infants, I was left fighting his symptoms the natural and safe ways that my mother used to use. A severely stuffy nose kept my son from eating or nursing, and he would wake up so many times in the night due to congestion and cough, that I knew it was going to be a rough day.

In my search for just the right products to ease some of his symptoms and get him (and me) a better night's sleep, I ran across an old favorite: Vicks BabyRub! A pint-sized version of the classic remedy for adults, BabyRub comes in a tiny 1.76 oz jar just perfect for diaper bags and changing tables. Made from all-natural and non-medicated ingredients (including eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, and aloe vera), it provided almost instant relief for my son's misery.

Late last night, I smeared a bit on his chest and neck at every changing. The vapors (while gentle) worked well to clear his breathing, and he was sleeping again by 3 a.m! I continue to reapply a touch at every other changing. He is getting through it, and I feel better knowing that I'm not harming him with unnecessarily strong medications.

Vicks BabyRub is available at most pharmacies, retailers, and online at Drugstore.com!

Review of Comfy Easy PC

I never could imagine that a 2-year-old would have a need for using the computer. But that was certainly before I had 4 kids, all clamoring for me to finish my work for the day so that they could "use the 'puter, Momma, PLEASE!" And while my older kids have gotten the hang of browsing parent-approved educational sites and using CD-ROM's as a change of pace from their normal Home Education curriculums, my 2-year-old gets so frustrated when he tries to do anything with the computer!

So imagine my amazement when we test drove the Easy PC by Comfy for the first time. With a very quick set up (just install the CD and plug the keyboard into an available USB port), my little guy was using the computer on his own! At first I couldn't quite understand the allure. Used on the the easiest setting, it was a combination of colors, sounds, and visual rewards for every time Matthias pushed a button. But after awhile, he settled deep into my pleather office chair for some serious computer time! We tried again on the second setting, and words accompanied the colors, shapes, weather patterns, and telephone calls to friends (yes a toy phone is included!) While there weren't exactly any traditional "games" to play on the easier settings, there was definitely something going on. Matthias would repeat everything he heard, and soon he was really connecting things! (And I have to mention that the PC shows great promise to engaging children in the 3 C's: Curiosity, Challenge, and Confidence. Read more about the 3 C's HERE.) His favorite word is now "flute," and he says it all the time!

We also had the opportunity to try another program for the Easy PC with my older son. At 4 years old, he was already using the computer regularly, with little assistance. But I would often times find that he had accidentally closed out a program, moved my desktop icons, or had trouble with the mouse. The Animal World software was a perfect fit for my son! A variety of worlds (Earth, Water, Forst and Snow) provide wonder and learning through puzzles, music, stories, and games! A special overlay for the keyboard made the new game compatible with our existing Easy PC keyboard, and the game installed just as easily as the original! I let him use the Easy PC with no worry of harmful changes to my computer system.

Now we have another child begging to use the computer. And while this could annoy me, I am thrilled that they all want to learn in such an exciting way! The Comfy Easy PC is designed for children ages 1-5, and the useful software finder tool can help you to get started! Want to try before you buy? Visit their interactive demo to see the Easy PC through the eyes of your child!

This award-winning product is available online at the Comfy website and other online retailers!

Wanna win one? One lucky Lille Punkin' Reader will get their very own Easy PC from Comfy! Just visit this link at the Comfy website, and tell us in the comments below: What age child you would like to win this for, and what software would be appropriate for them based on the handy developmental chart! You have two weeks to enter, and we will pick one lucky reader to receive the prize on November 9th! Giveaway is subject to our giveaway rules HERE.

Review of What to Expect the First Year by Workman Publishing Company

I remember looking at What to Expect When You're Expecting almost daily when I was pregnant with each of my 4 children. While not an exhaustive reference for the expecting mama, it was fairly detailed, and I was grateful to have it. I have also been a huge fan of the sequel in the best-selling series: What to Expect the First Year.

Since every child is different, it is hard to know what is just personality, and what could be a medical concern. This book has gone far to relieve some of the anxiety that the first year of parenting can bring. How high of a fever is too high? How many dirty diapers should my baby have? How is formula feeding different from breastfeeding? How do I handle poor sleeping or eating habits? The list goes on and on.

This book is one that will have a handy place on your shelf well throughout the first year. Even if you aren't in total agreement with all the parenting issues that the authors discuss (pacifier use, co-sleeping, discipline techniques, etc.) you will be sure to appreciate the universal bits of knowledge that are necessary for the health and happiness of any small child. The first aid section, for instance, is thorough and accurate. I am also very impressed with the unique perspectives on sibling rivalry, special-needs children, and multiples.

Most every mom (and dad) I know have used this book at least a time or two. Even more of them use it regularly! The question-and-answer format is totally user-friendly and makes for lighter reading on heavier subjects. Get your copy today at Amazon and other book outlets!

Wanna win? Lille Punkin' has one new copy to give away to a lucky reader! Just leave a comment here with a way for us to reach you, and we'll draw the winner on October 31st! You can read all the rules for our giveaways HERE.

Congratulations to Cam! She is our lucky winner!

Review of greendog children's clothing

I'm all for simple, fun wardrobes that make little ones look like little people, not gift wrap or food. So I get really excited when I check out the Macy's line of greendog clothing for babes!

A sponsor of the popular FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman PBS Kid's program, greendog has clothes that are as easy on the baby as they are on the eyes! With sizes from little to big, your kid can play easy and you can watch them grow with greendog. Bright bold colors that allows kids to be kids, I am a huge greendog fan!

My little guy is sporting some striped tees and cargo pants this week, and he is looking cozy and cute! But don't limit yourself when you can also dress baby in velour and camo prints that can mix and match for easy planning.

Hoodie and pants sets start at just $12.00 for babies! Check them out at Macy's online.

Review of ThermaCare HeatWraps

I have been in a little bit of some kind of joint or muscle pain since my first pregnancy 10 years ago. With each new baby, my back aches a little more, and my necks gets more tender. I love the feeling of a warm heating pad on my sore spots, but what about when you can't take the time to chill on the couch for a bit?

ThermaCare HeatWraps are my favorite way to solve this problem. With many shapes and sizes for all kinds of body aches, they are instantly activated when you open the package, and can be placed directly on the area. Adhesive backing keeps it in place for up to 12 hours (depending on the product used.) Just stick and go for gentle warming relief.

These are perfect for menstrual cramps, arthritis, back injuries, and stiff neck. While they aren't exactly cheap, they are a great product that you should have on hand for life's more painful moments. Visit the ThermaCare website to learn more about their new line of arthritis care, and you can enter to win the ultimate vacation, $1,000 or a year's supply of HeatWraps!

Review of Peek-A-Blocks

We are big Peek-A-Blocks fans at our house. Made by Fisher-Price and available for quite a few years now, they just seem to some up with more and more variations on the clever blocks for babies and toddlers!

Perhaps our favorite is the Rock & See Ark, a clever boat based on the classic tale of Noah's Ark. This ship holds several blocks with adorable pairs of animals ranging from elephants and swimming fish. They are just too cute!

For those children who enjoy listening and learning, there are Sound Sensations blocks with an assortment of noises for baby to enjoy. Rattles, clicks, and bell rings are just a few of the new sounds baby can take in and use to learn more about the world around them.

Do you have a favorite Peek-A-Block? Want to know more? Visit Fisher-Price for more info on all the latest varieties of our family's favorite blocks!

Review of Airborne Power Pixies

Note: Airborne has been the subject of some legal activity regarding their product claims. Like all of the products that we write about, we make no guarantees that products will have the same results for everyone. We also can only write honestly about what we know to be true (in this case, our own experiences with the Airborne -- it's flavor, ingredients, likability, etc.) Please use discretion when solely relying on product reviews for your purchasing decisions.

I am a huge fan of Airborne products. Taken at the first sign of a cold, before going out into a crowded event, or as I'm heading onto a plane, Airborne has been shown to prevent or lessen the symptoms of common viral illnesses. But try getting your kids to take the kid's version in a glass. No fun for anyone!

Now they have released a better, tastier alternative for the 4-12 year crowd. Power Pixies remind me of the classic Pixie Stix (powdered-sugar filled straws) we used to guzzle as kids. Only these contain 15 herbs and nutrients, including Vitamins A, C, E, Magnesium, and Zinc! A zippy cherry flavor that can almost pass for candy, the Pixies can be poured directly on a child's tongue -- no water needed!

I found the taste to be almost passable for candy. My kids couldn't tell the difference. An A+ product from an A+ company, Airborne has done it again! Available and drugstore and major retailers all over the U.S.!

Review of WubbaNub Pacifier

My baby was never really a pacifier kind of guy. He preferred "mama" any chance he could get, if you know what I mean. But once in a while, he would take a pacifier as a nice alternative to pinching and nipping at me when he got a little squirrelly. And for that I'm thankful.

WubbaNub developed a unique pacifier that makes it a little more convincing for my little guy to get on board with the pacifier. An adorable mini-stuffed animal attached to a Latex-Free Medical Grade Silicone Pacifier, the WubbaNub combines the comfort of sucking with a snuggly friend for baby! There are six different pals to choose from (Cat, Frog, Blue Horse, Pink Horse, Duck, and Dog.) All are soft, lovable, and great for developing hand-eye coordination. My little guy loves cuddling his little Frog pal while toying with the idea of taking that pacifier. It's a friend and a ----- (fill in the blank with "binky, boppy, nuk, binker, plug, dummy" or any other choice term.)

Why bother with pacifier clips or cords that can cause a hazard to baby? Why not give your little one a way to keep their pacifier close at hand on their own? WubbaNubs are easy for baby to hold on to, keeping their pacifier where they can get to it at night or on the go!

Wubbanub is affordably-priced and available at quality infant retailers and online at these fine locations!

Review of Kaponga Nuts Perfume

I am traditionally a glass-bottle perfume kind of girl. I like the pretty colors and designs of the containers that most perfumes come in. But there is a drawback to this kind of packaging - they are wasteful. Not only to the environment, but also to my pocketbook! Imagine my horror when my favorite bottle of French perfume shattered on my tile floor on the bathroom a few months ago ... ruining an almost full and very expensive gift.

Now fast-forward to last week when I am gifted two very special and very unique Nuts by Kaponga. Tiny little wooden containers hold very delicious varieties of natural perfume made from the finest fragrance in a base of bees wax and sweet almond oil. Why the solid perfume? Well, it became known to me after trying these little delights, most perfumes today are diluted with water and alcohol! That means that soon after you spray them, they start to lose their original scent.

So I have been faithfully applying these exotic scents created by Kaponga to my pulse points every day. Let me tell you, the scent hardly fades. My daily shower is the only thing responsible for the fragrance disappearing -- not time or unnecessary alcohol additives drying up.

My favorite yummy numbers 8 and 13, along with a variety of other tropical, exotic, and floral scents are available online at Kaponga.com... you won't be dissappointed!

Review of Cleanwater Infant Tub by 4Moms

Everywhere I look there seems to be a new infant tub coming out, each one more ergonomically designed and whimsical looking than the first. But the Cleanwater Infant Tub by 4Moms has a unique feature that really changed the way I viewed bathing my kids -- an important safety feature that ALL bathtubs should have!

Before I get into the best feature of the infant tub, however, I would like to say that the design is fantastic! Lightweight and easy to clean, the Cleanwater tub can work over the sink, on a countertop, or in the big tub like most other infant tubs. The cool thing about the Cleanwater tub is that the water starts at one end of the tub and flows around the back of baby, taking all the yucky stuff that may have come off of your dirty little one, and sweeping it out the side of the tub. You can leave the water running and keep a continuous flow of fresh water around your baby! (I know you can visualize what happens when you set your baby into a tub of clean water only to have them use it as a potty... gross. This tub is a solution for that very nasty, but common problem!)

Now for the absolute best feature of the tub (the one I think ALL tubs should have), the digital thermometer with Temp-Assure technology! This is no ordinary thermometer. Since it is important to be sure that with a continual flow of water, the temperature stays safe, this thermometer displays how safe the temp of the water is with a color display. Blue says "Too cold." Green says "Just right." Red says "Too hot!" And when the water gets hot enough to cause burns, it beeps.

We "played" with the temperature technology for quite awhile at my house. We were amazed at how it immediately detected the temperature and changed colors to correspond to the safety of the temp. The colors are brightly lit and easy to see from even a distance (although we all know that we need to keep baby in arms reach at all times when using any infant tub.)

This very cool tub made me feel confident in the safety AND cleanliness of my baby. I would highly recommend this tub to anyone wanting the ultimate in design and functionality for an infant tub. (And is it any wonder that the tub is designed by four Moms?)

The Cleanwater Infant Tub and other Temp-Assure products (Spout Cover, Sink Thermometer, Shower Thermometer) by 4Moms are available at Amazon and other retailers where infant items are sold!

Review of List Caddy

I had to admit that I didn't think much of the List Caddy when I first saw it. "A very simple piece of plastic," I thought as I glanced at it for the first time.

But then I checked it out a little more. This simple invention is actually something I could really use. It easily holds any list and pen or pencil so you don't have to. Even better, it can do this three different ways:

-Using magnets to stick to a metal surface (or your fridge)
-Standing by itself on a flat surface (yep, it can hold my recipe cards for me while I cook!)
-Clipped onto the handle of your shopping cart (bye-bye crumpled lists in the bottom of my purse)

And while you may think that it would be easy just to hold your own list, most of you already have enough things to hold on to when shopping. The List Caddy could be your own personal shopping assistant! (How I remember the time when I let my daughter hold my coupons for me while shopping. We ended up spending 30 extra minutes retracing our steps to find all the high-value and FREE item coupons that she had dropped before we could check out. I vowed NEVER to let her do this again.)

There are other cool uses for the List Caddy, including:

-placecard holders
-reserving seats at functions
-wine bottle gift tags (that can later be used in a nifty way!)

The List Caddy is durable, affordable, and comes in several attractive colors. (And those of you with businesses could even have them personalized with your logo!) Visit List Caddy's website for ordering info!

Wanna win a few? Visit the List Caddy website to find your favorite color of List Caddy, and email us at kylinsmom [at] yahoo.com with your choice. (Be sure to put "List Caddy" in the subject line so that we know it isn't spam!) We will be giving 2 lucky winners a couple to keep and a couple to share! Check out our rules HERE. Winners will be drawn at midnight EST on October 27th. Good luck!

Review of Donkey Kong Jungle Climber for Nintendo DS

I was a huge Donkey Kong fan growing up. When I tried explaining this to my now 9-year-old daughter, she didn't quite understand the concept. So I was thrilled to be able to try out the new Donkey Kong Jungle Climber for Nintendo DS, and we played it together!

Reminiscent of earlier Donkey Kong versions, this game seems true to DK's personality. Jumping, climbing, spinning, and smashing are the ways to win in this unique and challenging game. Collect enough gems and you can fly! Exploding barrels and sunflowers that throw you way up high are exciting ways to get more bananas and coins for bonus features. Groovy music and fun sound effects add to the charm of this game.

Detailed tutorials allow you to work through practice challenges before facing off to the bad guys (which are almost more fun than the real game!) You can use more buttons for jumping in this game, and both my left-handed daughter and I found it easy to get the hang of the controls. And up to 3 games can be saved so that you and your friends can each have their own adventure! (For even more fun, you can take on up to three friends in fun multiplayer challenges using DS Download Play and local wireless.)

My daughter can't stop raving about how fun this game is. I even sneak a play in here and there when I can. All in all, this is fun for the whole family. (Rated E for everyone) Get it at your favorite game retailer and Amazon.com!

Review of Simply Gargle Salt Water Rinse

Maybe you are familiar with the old home remedy of gargling with salt water to cure what ails you? My husband still practices this piece of wisdom for colds, coughs, and anytime he just wants throat relief.

What Simply Gargle has done is to take that same time-honored practice and add a few special touches for today's consumer. The salt water has been infused with a combination of 6 antioxidants and astringents. (Vitamin C, Grape Seed Extract, Sage Extract, Rosemary Extract, Rosehips Extract, and Witch Hazel Extract.)

When we all started coming down with colds this week, my 9-year-old daughter was the first to try the individually packaged salt-water treatments. She needed a little help to twist off the cap of the plastic vial, but was able to easily gargle the treatment in the back of her throat for the recommended 15-30 seconds. With a bit of a grimace, she spit the water into the sink. "Tastes like salt water," she commented.

Five minutes later, I asked how her throat felt. "Pretty good, mom!"

Two days into the cold, my entire family is suffering. My daughter has approached me for her salt-water treatment on her own twice already. My husband has followed. I have even given it a try, and admit that it has helped take away some of the irritation that has developed from this horrible cold.

Easy to carry, the Simply Gargle treatments can be stuck into a purse, briefcase or diaper bag. They even have several varieties, including Sore Throat and Cough, Cold and Flu, Night-time Formula, and Allergy and Hayfever! Available at Albertsons, Shopko, Walmart, and Amazon.com!

The Rotten Pumpkin Awards

I often get asked if we do honest reviews here at Lille Punkin'. The answer is a "YES!" While we only review high-quality products that I would use in my own home, we do rarely stumble across a product that I would consider a "dud." I do not usually report on these items (unless they are affected by a recall) for two reasons:

1) I don't usually like to give press (positive or negative) to products that don't deserve it

2) I have so many great products that I believe in to share with you!

That being said, I don't want anyone to question that our reviews are unbiased. We get sent many products, and I would say that 90% or more are really great items that I would share with all my friends and family. 5% just need a little tweaking, and I communicate that back to the manufacturer. The remaining 5% are just awful.

Those 5% that I feel you should know about will be given our "Rotten Pumpkin Award" coming up next month. We will be featuring a handful of products that are just creepy or wrong for the kinds of families we enjoy sharing with. I hope that you find the article to be informative and fun!

(And if you know of a product that should be nominated for our "Rotten Pumpkin Award", just email me and let me know about it. We'll look into it and see if it deserves the award!)

We will also be making additional enhancements to our website, including product reviews by category and additional giveaways!

If you haven't already signed up for our newsletter, get your name in my October 20th to be included in the next giveaway!

Review of "If Everybody Did" by Jo Ann Stover

This is one book that every household should own. If Everybody Did by Jo Ann Stover is a hilarious lesson in peer pressure and accountability. (As serious as this sounds, it is presented in a fun and comical way!)

Just imagine if everybody leaned back on their chairs, slammed the doors, and squeezed the cat? Cartoonish illustrations accompany natural consequences to the nth degree in this lesson for children (and adults) of all ages.

A Junior Literary Guild Selection, this rhyming story of being responsible for your OWN actions, is an affordable addition to your home library. (My kids snicker at the silly kids in the book, but learn about cause and effect at the same time!)

Check out Ms. Stover's other book, They Didn't use their Heads for more lessons for 2-6 year olds!

Review of NoodleNet

Do you want a truly safe way for your kids to surf the net? Are you frustrated with filters that just don't seem to catch everything, and pop-ups that interfere with your computer's processes? Perhaps you're just tired of having to assist your young child with accidental clicks on ads or closing out the browser.

I have found my all-time favorite product for allowing kids to safely use the internet, and it's called NoodleNet! NoodleNet is a password-protected web browser that allows kids to only surf the safest kid-friendly and educational websites on the internet. Disney, National Geographic, Nick Jr., PBS Kids, and Noggin are just a few of the places that are already programmed into the browser. Large icons make for easy clicking to each of the fun places to visit on the net. And your child CANNOT click on ads that would take them away from the approved websites.

The best part of the program is that it has 3 customizable setting based on age. Kids will find websites already set up into categories for easy browsing. They can easily read, watch videos, play games and more. They won't even need you to help them!

And did I mention that they can't close out the browser without a parent's password? That means no more of your important files ending up lost or in the trash. They can only use Noodlenet, and no other PC applications, until YOU say so!

We are huge fans of this program. My kids' daily reward is "NoodleNet!" My 4 year old always asks, "Mom, is it time for NoodleNet yet?"

Check it out for yourself. New users can get a FREE 7 day trial! You will never see the internet the same again!

Review of Circle of Friends Hair Products for Children

We have had great experiences with Circle of Friends in the past. (See our reviews of the Lice Free Zone and Little Docs products for more information.) So I wasn't surprised at the response I got from my children when they use the Circle of Friends hair products!

Pleasantly scented (think grape, banana, and rootbeer) the hair products from Circle of Friends are of boutique quality, but made for children! Each product features a different child from a culture somewhere in the world. Kids get a chance to get spiffed up while learning about foreign lands from kids just like them!

Educational and fun, the Circle of Friends products are designed for every hair type. My curly-headed boy loves Jacque's Hair Jam (Grape scented texturizing wax), while my straight and course-haired son likes the Arctic Freeze Hyper Hold Gel (peppermint scented!) The products work well and are easy to use.

For super-duper bubble cleaning excitement, get a hold of their own Sudsy Sponge! These duck-shaped and specially-scented sponges are filled with enough soap for 6-10 bathings. All natural soap lasts a long time, and when it runs out, you still have a fun sponge for playing with in the tub! In 6 fun varieties....
All items are available at the Circle of Friends website, Amazon, and select beauty boutiques and salons near you!

Review of the Original Magna Doodle by Ohio Art

My oldest boy draws all day and all night. I am continually finding wadded up renditions of aliens, monsters, angels, bunnies with socks, and family members scribbled up on stolen pieces of printer paper. I decided to do something about it. I got him a Magna Doodle.

Sometimes toys just need to be simple. This is one of those toys. Designed for ages 4 and up, the Magna Doodle provides hours upon hours of quiet drawing fun without mess and without stress! The easy sliding erasing bar gives you a new "drawing board" anytime you need it! Perfect for sitting on a small lap during church or car rides, I give this toy an enthusiastic double thumbs up!

Equipped with 4 small shape magnets for assorted designs (which I keep put away for now -- they could be a choking hazard for my youngest) and a tethered pen for keeping it all together, the Magna Doodle by Ohio Art is a keeper.

Enjoy this classic for under $15, available at online retailers and department stores everywhere!

Review of Fly Fusion Pentop Computer

We are not the most gadget-friendly family. It's not that we don't enjoy or know how to use things. We just have a hard time keeping track of all the components, games, batteries, accessories, etc that the newest electronic toy or learning system needs to operate. This is why the Fly Fusion Pentop Computer from Leapfrog is so genius!

Contained within a single writing instrument, the Fly Fusion has so much to offer. My husband adopted this tool immediately after we received it from BzzAgent. Within minutes, he was using it for all kinds of fun and interesting activities:

English to Spanish translation (and vice versa)
Math equations
Music mixing
Games, riddles, brain teasers
Scheduling appointments

I was hooked as soon as I tried it, too! I loved using the special "Flypaper" and pen to make flashcards quizzes. (Simply writing a two-letter abbreviation with a circle around it triggers the computer to start a new function!) It seemed almost to futuristic, but was tons of fun!

There are all kinds of applications to buy and download for the Fly Fusion. Kids will enjoy games from popular movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. Parents can use the pen to scribble down notes or meeting minutes and instantly upload their jottings into a Word document. Maybe you'll use your Fly Fusion to download and listen to MP3 songs!

The Fly Fusion starts at just $79.99, and contains everything you need to get started. Available at Amazon and other online retailers!
