Sharpie Squad Update!

I've been a member of the amazing Sharpie Squad for awhile now, but just recently used my new assortment of Sharpie markers to help my kids create some really cool things. In addition to receiving a variety of Sharpies, we got some blank canvases to create with, including a metal lunchbox, a white t-shirt, and a canvas messenger bag.

My daughter claimed the messenger back straight away, using the Twin Tip colors to create her own "store everything" bag. With a few of her favorite metal buttons added on, it really shows her personality!

My sons also got into the spirit, branding their very own metal lunchbox for future storage of all the Sharpies we'll be getting! Here is what they did (I helped label it, of course.)

We are also getting ready to decorate a bunch of plain white tees at our local Tween Book Club meeting in August! We'll have plenty of videos and pics to share! Stay tuned...

To learn more about the Sharpie Squad, the cool things that talented people (unlike me) are making with their Sharpies, and to see how you can get involved, be sure to visit the SharpieUncapped.com website and the Sharpie blog!

*I am an online brand advocate for Sharpie. I maintain a relationship where I receive product to review in exchange for sharing new Sharpie happenings with my blog community. If you have questions regarding Sharpie or the Sharpie Squad, please email me.

Review of Libby's Jumbo Cups

If you're feeling the pain of high-priced fresh fruit, I can totally relate. Just last year, we started venturing into the world of pantry-fresh fruit to help fill in the nutrition gap for my kids. With no clue what's going to be on sale each week, having a stash of fruit cups on hand gives me some certainty with my meal planning, and I have to admit -- I love the stuff over cottage cheese!

Libby's Jumbo Cups aren't available in stores until September, but we got some *free samples to give them a try early. Just as yummy as the original Peaches, Pears, Mixed Fruit, and Cherry Mixed Fruit, these fruit cups are much bigger (50% bigger than your typical fruit cup). That makes them perfect for putting into a grown-up's lunch bag (or a really, really hungry 6-year-old's.) And did I mention that the fruit is from California?

I liked serving these cups at lunch time, mostly because I knew it would be enough for my growing 1st-grader and my tween daughter (who usually ask for spendy seconds on the fruit.) I then took one of the jumbo cups and split it between my two youngest, and this was the perfect size for everyone! (I save the empties for just this reason.)

Wanna Win? These Jumbo Cups aren't out in stores yet, but we have some to give away to a lucky reader! Just comment on this post with your favorite fruit from the line: Peaches, Pears, Mixed Fruit, and Cherry Mixed Fruit. You have until August 17th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in, and we'll randomly pick on winner to receive 8 cups in the mail -- before you can buy them!

Giveaways are subject to complete site rules. (Be sure to give us a way to reach you if you win, and remember that we will never use your email or contact info for anything other than to send your prize.) Good luck, and be sure to check out all of our other giveways!

The 3-packs will hit stores at a shelf price of about $3.39 each. For more info on Libby's fruit offering, please see their website at www.fruitification.com

A Whole Bunch of Recalls!

Picture of Recalled Air bouncer chairs

Wow! You go off to BlogHer, and what happens? The whole world starts recalling.... Here are the highlights from the past week. Please check each release individually if you think your family may be affected:

BabySwede Bouncer Chairs recalled due to laceration hazard

Buster Brown children's clog shoes recalled due to choking hazard

Stay SAFE!

We Did BlogHer (Really Did It)

Ok... so where does one even begin talking about an amazing weekend that helped me reconnect with the fabulous Walmart 11Moms, as well as numerous PR friends, bloggy buddies, and the Energizer bunny?

The conference was mad. Confusing. Busy. Frustrating. But I loved it anyway. The people were amazing. I roomed with Lynnae from BeingFrugal.net (you have to read her post on the good and bad of BlogHer. She says it so much better than I.) I hung with folks from Tide and learned all about their Duo Pacs and the Bounce Dryer bar (more on that later.) I also played co-hostess to an amazing party with Energizer:

Did you go to BlogHer? What was your FAVORITE part? Tell me!

Oh, and before I forget.. my friend Sheena over at Mommy Daddy Blog gave away some cute little swag bags. My favorite part were the Kellogg's fiber bars (no joke). It's amazing how hungry you get at a conference! While all the goodies inside the bag are long gone, my daughter loved the little tropical felt handbag that all the swag came in. Kudos!

Of Course We'll be at BlogHer, Silly!

I'm so excited for what will be a whirlwind of activity over the next 4 days! I'm leaving tonight to head out to Chicago, for a little dinner and a good night's sleep (what's that?) before prepping for an early morning with the Walmart 11 Moms and a full day of BlogHer business conference.

Will you be at BlogHer? If so, what sessions are you going to? I'm taking in "a little of this" and "a little of that" but what I'm most excited about are the parties! Crocs, Energizer, Tide, One2One, and Mom Central are just a few of the gracious folks providing food, drinks, fun, and prizes at this year's BlogHer parties.

I can't wait to see you all there!

Enjoy Simple Charging with the Energizer Compact Charger

What do you get when you combine effective charging with the most simple, small, and compact charger on the market?  Probably something like the Energizer Compact Charger.  As an online advocate for Energizer, I got to try out this no-frills little charger for my rechargeable batteries.

It fits in the palm of my hand when not in use, which makes it perfect to toss into my travel bag or flashlight drawer.  When charging, it holds 2 or 4 AA or AAA batteries.  Just pop them in, watch for the indicator light to show fully charged, and pop them out!  There is no need for a separate cord for this charger -- just plug it into the wall and charge!

This dummy-proof charger gets most batteries charged in as little as 2 hours, and comes with some AA rechargeables to get your started.  Another great feature is that it's Energy Star compliant!  That's pretty green :)

Wanna win?  We have one of these to give away to a lucky reader.  To enter, just leave a comment on this post with how you would use the charger.  You have until August 17th, 2009 at 11:59 pm CST to get your entry in.  One entry per person, please.

*As an online advocate for Energizer, I will happily be sharing many more exciting product offerings designed to help you and your family save some cash and help the planet! Have a question about rechargeable batteries and how to make them work for your family? Email me!

Review of Coraline on DVD

It's coming tomorrow (July 21st), but we got the *sneak preview of the much-anticipated movie based on the book -- Coraline! The movie, from Universal Home Studios, and directed by the guy who did James and the Giant Peach, is a bit spooky in parts (OK.. it's rather spooky in most parts.) The story in itself is rather creepy -- Coraline enters a dream world where she has an "other mother" and "other father", both with buttons for eyes.

While little children may be especially frightened by this tale (it contains everything from crawly insects to references to children being eaten by the villian), it's no more macabre than the usual classic fairy tales. (Do you even remember how bizzare Hansel and Gretel were?) Parents will have fun watching this flick with the kids, and while I would gauge it most appropriate for kids ages 5 and up, some younger kids may be OK with it (and likewise, some easily frightened older children may not go for it.) Fortunately, you can tell early on in the movie if it's a bit too much... it gets weird right away.

Amazing technical features of the movie include playback in 2D or 3D (includes 3D glasses) and availability on Blu-Ray. Full of magical destinations, bravery, and wit, I thought it was a good film to watch with the family and then talk about later. (A major theme of the film is not being content with what you have, and paying for it in negative consequences.) Overall, it was artfully done and contained redeeming values that fit in line with our family's film preferences. (Note: One more humorous, but a bit shocking scene, included a big-busted woman in a carnival act. What appears to be almost nakedness -- she is covered in all the sensitive areas -- turns out to be a costume. It raises eyebrows, but is not too concerning.)

For your own sneak peek before the film goes on sale tomorrow, check out the YouTube channel dedicated to clips from the movie. You'll get to see (or hear, rather) Teri Hatcher, Dakota Fanning, and the rest of the cast in some pretty amazing performances! You can also take a walk in Coraline's 3D garden at http://www.coraline3dgarden.com/ There, you can print a page from the site and use your webcam and microphone to reveal the garden's secrets. Very cool!

Review of Pahappahooey Island "What About Me?" on DVD

My kids are entering the "me" age very rapidly. Whether it's who had what toy first, who should get the prize in the cereal box, or where I should give my much-needed attention today, my kids are always thinking, "What about me?"

While I'd like to think that I'm doing a good job as a parent in showing them how to have empathy for others and a balanced sense of self-worth, it's not always easy. We were thrilled to be able to *review a copy of Pahappahooey Island's: What About Me, a project of Anchor Bay Entertainment and featuring Joyce Meyer!

My kids really loved the puppets in this film. They weren't too hokey or overexaggerated. They just seemed like real kids they knew, and went through an adventure that could almost have taken place in our living room (except for the whole treasure hunt thing.) When tempted by evil to think of only themselves, the puppets have a chance to do the right thing -- a perfect example for my kids and myself!

Don't worry about not being able to pronunciate "Pahappahooey" right away... you'll get it! With catchy tunes, a truthful storyline, and a chance for kids to build character and grow in their faith, this DVD is a perfect accompanyment to your homebased curriculum or entertainment library!

(This DVD also contains a Bonus episode: Hide it In Your Heart. If you know anything about the Bible verse it refers to, you'll agree that it is a very special message for little ones to learn!) More info on the DVD is available at Anchor Bay Enterainment's website.

Review of Tide Stain Release In-Wash Booster Duo Pacs

How frustrating is to spend money on good clothes for your kids... only to find them ruined by stains within the first few wears? I get this problem at my house all the time, mostly because I try to stain treat, but often things "slip in" the wash that really shoud have gotten special treatment. I only find out they were stained until after I wash them, dry them, and set it in too well to do anything about it.

Tide recently *sent me a pre-sale sample of their new Tide Stain Release In-Wash Booster duo Pac. The idea behind these little packets (which look a lot like dishwasher tabs) is that they release powder and liquid stain-fighting cleaners directly into your wash, without the need for additional spot-treatments.

We put these little guys to the test, holding my breath and purposely NOT spraying my standby pre-treater on the grubby clothes I knew would be hard to clean. Instead, I used my regular detergent and dropped one of the Tide Stain Release packets into the wash water.

Hanging up the clothes on the line later, I noticed right away how fresh they smelled! AND (here is the important part), they were without the nasty stains that usually adorn my 3 youngest boys' clothes (mud, chocolate, and washable marker.) It looked just a good as when I pre-treat, but I didn't have to treasure hunt the laundry basket to find the worst offenders. With a few other types of stains (mustard and ink), they needed to go through twice before they were completely gone. In these cases, it's probably best to pre-treat with their other pre-treating product (the one in the liquid bottle, which works FABULOUSLY!) For most of our stain needs, I still love the duo-pacs, but I think Tide knew that it wouldn't address every need, which is why the line is so diverse.

As a mom who uses liquid detergent, stain spray, a powdered laundry booster, and a bleach whitener, this is a pleasant addition to my routine. If I can reduce some of the packaging I use, prevent ruined clothing due to my lazy pre-treating habits, and give my laundry a bit of a facelift in the process, I'm totally game.

Tide Stain Release isn't available in stores .. yet. You can, however, check out all 3 products on line at www.tidestainrelease.com. Learn about their features, check out reviews, and get a money-saving coupon for $1.50 off your purchase.

Review of Poo-Pourri and Poo-Pourri Jr.

We don't want to admit that sometimes life stinks. Whether you want to eliminate any signs of using the bathroom, or you struggle with an odorific diaper pail on a daily basis, keeping things fresh can avoid embarassment and annoyance.

We had the chance to try some samples of Poo-Pourri and Poo-Pourri Jr. this last week. The small spray bottles contain an all-natural oil spray that helps disguise those smells you and your little one can leave behind. They really helped to control the "little stinkers" in our house!

How does Poo-Pourri work? Simply. Just spritz a spray in the toilet before you go, and you'll have no need to douse the air with unnatural or overpowering commercial sprays when you're done. It leaves behind a fresh, yummy scent!

The Poo-Pourri Jr. is designed to be sprayed on a diaper or in the diaper pail before you toss it, giving you another few hours to take the trash out -- before horrible consequences can occur.

There are three scents of Poo-Pourri (The Original, No. 2, Heaven Scent), The Poo-Pourri Jr., Royal Flush (for men), and Pooch-Pourri (for pets.) All are pleasantly-scented, not too strong, and come in attractive packaging. (You can also buy the fancy atomizer gift set for a fashionable way to display your sprays!)

Poo-Pourri products start at $9.95, and we like them very much at our house! They also offer a 30-day unconditional guarantee, so if you're not satisfied, they'll get you taken care of (but we're pretty sure you'll like it.)

Review of CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Foundation

I'm only 31, and I've frequently been mistaken for a 25-year-old, so why would someone my age even consider an "anti-aging" makeup formula? Because I care. And I want to look young forever, so to speak. When I was sent a sample of the latest in CoverGirl technologies to try, I was eager to see if, even at my age, I could possibly look a bit younger.

The new foundation Simply Ageless is a team effort by both CoverGirl and Olay. It's cool, because it combines the smoothing, moisturizing benefits of an Olay Regenerist Serum, and the health features of an amazingly effective SPF 22 protector. The foundation went on creamy, and while I was a little concerned at first that I would get too much of either the moisturizer (which was "swirled" in) or the foundation, it all balances out when you apply it. The product claimed to not gather in wrinkles and pores (which makes you look older) but promised a smoother, younger look. I'm not a heavy foundation wearer, so I was not prepared for the rather airbrushed appearance that I had with the foundation on -- but it worked true to its word. I had flawless looking skin in just a few minutes.

Getting the right color match with this makeup can be a bit tricky. The CoverGirl website offers a look at the full collection of 15 shades (which was a bit overwhelming.) Initially I tried a color that I thought would match my tone (it seemed to match perfectly with other foundations I wore) but was way too light for my complexion, and I ended up added a bronzing powder to even it out. By choosing just a shade darker, I hit the perfect match on my 2nd try.

The website also offers a video tutorial and tips for opening the container (which surprisingly was a bit tricky to figure out at first.) Priced at a mid-range $13.99, this is a bit more than I usually pay for foundations. Since it combines two products in one, however, I'm likely to buy it with a coupon from the Sunday paper.

For more info on SimplyAgeless, visit the CoverGirl website. (You can buy it directly online, but I recommend first-time buying at a store where you can sample the shades or through the Drugstore.com website, which offers a free return program if you're not happy with the color you choose.)

Locally Grown Comes to my Wal-Mart!

As one of the Wal-Mart Elevenmoms, I get to experience cool things at my local Walmart (like buying a new iPhone.. which I promise I'll brief you on this month!) One thing I have been anxiously waiting for, however, is the introduction of locally grown produce into one of the Walmarts in the Omaha area.

Today, I was blown away when I walked into the newest Walmart! It was like no other I had seen, and reminded me more of a Whole Foods or a Wild Oats than a Wal-Mart. (That's a good thing, by the way.) What was I most excited about? In addition to scoring the cutest underthings from the new OP line, I was thrilled to see locally grown tomatoes still on the vine, and available for less than my local farmer's market. I knew that these guys were fresh, because I could smell them from a few feet away! Yummy!

Here is a picture of the sign accompanying the locally grown display (never mind that it mentions sweet corn instead of the tomatoes -- what was up with that?) These are people just like my parents. Farmers, families, and Nebraskans. I couldn't have been prouder. (Oh, and the tomatoes.. were to die for. I had them on a big plate of homemade nachos right when I got home from my trip today. Delish.)

I can't wait for more foods to arrive from Nebraska producers. This is just another reason I'm glad to be part of the Wal-Mart 11Moms community!

Participation in the Wal-Mart Elevenmoms program is voluntary. Wal-Mart does not require its selected participants, at any time, to blog or discuss Wal-Mart, its brands, products, initiatives, events or other programs related to the company.

Review of Sun and Earth Cleaning Products

Well, well, well.. time for another cleaning product review (yeah!) I really do love my products, and when I can find one that not only works really well, but smells fantastic, too -- I get super excited! When I was approached to review the entire line of Sun and Earth products, I had never heard of them! The packaging was very different-looking, and I didn't recognize it from anywhere. I'm glad I got a chance to try it, however.

Here's why:

1. The smell... oh, dreamy. They are the most refreshingly terrific odor of orange oil and orange zest. You use any of the products, and it really smells like you have an instantly clean house -- even if you haven't finished yet. It's not a chemical smell, at all. But lovely :)

2. The goodness. These products shine as safe alternatives to products that contain petroleum, chlorine, phosphates, dyes, and perfumes. Not only will you find none of that stuff in here, you'll also be happy to hear that they are made from plant, fruit, and vegetable oils. They are non-toxic!

How did they compare to other cleaners in the "cleaning" category? Awesomely. I didn't notice any problems, except that I had to dial down how much I used (the laundry detergent, specifically). They are concentrated, and you don't need as much as you think!

I had the chance to try the hand wash, laundry liquid detergent, fabric softener sheets, fabric softener liquid, counter top spray, glass cleaner, laundry stain stick, dish detergent packets, and the dish liquid (which is my favorite of all the products.) Do you want a chance, too?

We are giving away one complete set of everything I tested, plus a nifty branded reusable tote bag (perfect for groceries.) The total value of the prize is $52.00! That's everything you need to get cleaning right away!

Wanna win? Just leave a comment on this post with your favorite cleaning tip. It can be anything. You can enter every day (each subsequent entry after the first unique entry can just be a comment saying "Today's Entry"), and you have until July 24th, 2009 at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in!

Giveaways are subject to complete site rules. (Be sure to give us a way to reach you if you win, and remember that we will never use your email or contact info for anything other than to send your prize.) Good luck, and be sure to check out all of our other giveways!

Find Adventure Games For Fun and Learning at Nick.com

While I am not a fan of my kids sitting around wasting a day playing videos games or watching TV, sometimes it just needs to happen. So they usually head for the computer and Nick.com. I can’t complain about that one because it’s very kid friendly with a huge assortment of games for kids of all ages.

Having three all around the same age, they all want to play at the same time and if you have more than one computer, it can make things a lot more fun. It is awesome that Nick.com offers multiplayer games for my kids to play against each other. It keeps the fighting over turns to a minimum. Being able to play at the same time not only allows them to have fun together, it helps promote patience and good sportsmanship skills; as we all know, it’s not always easy telling your opponent congratulations. So when the rainy days come, I know I can count on them to play well together on Nick.com.

But they have their moments when they want to play by themselves and Nick.com has a lot to offer for single players. My girl is a fan of the adventure games so she heads for her favorite character, Spongebob. She loves how they can explore Bikini Bottom while playing a variety of adventure games featuring Spongebob, Gary and Patrick. My son likes a little more of a challenge and so he goes for the Avatar games. Quest Creator is one of his favorites because it offers a lot of action. I like that Nick.com has some strategy games on there that go hand in hand with challenging their learning skills. That is the mom in me! So I encourage them to play games like word searches or even hangman.

The games offered at Nick.com are ok in my book. The kids not only have fun, but they can learn while doing so. You can’t go wrong with that combination!

Father's Day Followup

Yes, I KNOW! It's been a bit since Father's Day, when I promised you that I would share what I finally got my hubby from T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. Well, here we go (and remember I paid no more than $25 per store for my purchases):

2 pairs of designer blue jeans (with a MSRP of $100 each!)
A pack of 12 socks
One aebleskiver pan

You're probably asking two questions:

1. How did I get all that for less than $50 total?
2. What's up with the aebleskiver pan?

Well, you can read all about my passion for fashion and saving money in previous posts I've done for Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. That should answer how I got everything so affordably. To answer the second question, you should know that I'm part Danish, speak a bit of the language, and love the food. Aebleskiver are a little round pancake ball that I LOVE to make, but have never found a pan that I like. Can you believe that I was strolling the aisles of Marshalls and found one there! Woot!

I'm one happy camper, my husband looks fine in his new jeans, and I'm making aebleskiver for breakfast at least once a week now. Father's Day was a breeze, compliments of Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. Thanks!

My Kiddos will Love Kideos!

I love videos.. especially when they are FREE! Check out this cool online site I just found out about today: Kideos! It's kind of like YouTube, but without the junk that frightens parents into locking down the internet for good *chuckle* All the videos have been pre-approved by a parent!

Some of the best videos I watched instantly on Kideos include: Dr. Seuss: The Sneetches Part 1, Schoolhouse Rock Fireworks, and SpongeBob SquarePants Night Light (full episode.) We are going to be up late tonight watching some Kideos at my house!
