You Have to Read.. Amy Giggles by Coy Bowles! (#childhunger #giveaway)

I remember being picked on as a kid.  I was small (wearing a size 2T in the first grade), and a bit on the nerdy side.  Some of the things that are now considered my greatest strengths were the very things I was teased about. The same is the case for Amy Giggles.

Who is Amy Giggles?  She's the main character of a new children's book from Coy Bowles of the Zac Brown Band.  In the story, Amy is teased for her unique laugh, and hides it well into adulthood.  Only after she realizes that it's a precious gift to have an infectious laugh, does she grow comfortable with it and allow it to be set free!  This amazing story of acceptance and being kind to others is a story that all children should read.  My kids really enjoyed hearing me read Amy Giggles, and it set the stage for some discussions around confidence, being an individual, and bullying.

I spoke with Coy about the inspiration behind the book, as well as his involvement with the ConAgra Child Hunger Ends Here program.  Here are a few things that stuck out from our conversation:
  • Coy was inspired to write the book after meeting a real-life lady who was self-conscious about her laugh.  He couldn't believe someone would change their laugh to avoid being made fun of.
  • After the encounter, Coy went to the mountains and did some writing.  The book came to him within minutes, and after writing it down, he read it to his good friend Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band.
  • Coy didn't have children, but the story passed the test of Zac (who had kids and knew what they like). 2 years later, the story of Amy Giggles is available via the new book!

In addition to the book, Coy is super-excited to be partnering with Child Hunger Ends Here. With America being such a blessed country, he believes that there is no reason a kid on America’s soil shouldn’t have food. While it may be costly, the nutritional balance that kids need can happen if everyone comes together. "There is no reason it shouldn’t happen," says Coy.
