Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (and Giveaway!)

We have always been big fans of the Wimpy Kid movies (in fact, we are anxious to see the new one that just came out.)  Like any good educators, however, we prefer if the kids read the books first, so we were a bit embarrassed that we had not actually read any of them before we let the kids see the films.

When we were offered the chance to review a Wimpy Kid book, we though "why not?" and chose the very first book to start with.  As a family that home educates, we have our kids reading 2-3 books at any one time, and we like them to read a few educational books before taking a break with a "just-for-fun" title.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the perfect book to relax and have fun with!

My kids are big fans of underdog stories (who isn't, really?) and the antics that main character Greg gets himself into are pretty typical for a kid who means well but still has a lot to learn.  While we can't praise everything that Greg or his friends do in the books, they are perfect "teachable moments" material for talking to our kids about character and doing the right thing -- even when it's difficult or unpopular.

I think the most redeeming quality about the book is that the parents are just like you and me.  They make mistakes, but they really do love their kids.  For reluctant readers, I can't think of a better book (partly due to the illustrations), and even if your child is reading more advanced titles, this book creates an opportunity to giggle, learn, and be part of a series that has really helped to define a good portion of today's book culture.

You can pick up this book at any retailer, or order online at Amazon.com!
