Get Crazy with Crystals with this Summer S.T.E.M Learning Kit from Young Scientists Club

You guys know how much we love science, and this past week, we were lucky enough to review our THIRD science kit from The Young Scientists Club.  This one featured the characters from The Magic School Bus and was all about one of my kids' favorite topics: crystals!

This kit came complete with all you need to get started (an observation chart, tweezers, brushes, magnifying glass, petri dishes, measuring cup, etc.) provided you have a few basics in your cupboard (salt, sugar, water, etc.) Kids can follow along with the story-based activities to learn the physics, chemistry, geology, and math behind crystals and how they are made.  My boys dug in right away with a lesson on observing common everyday crystals.  Here they are observing, and a picture they drew to show what they learned. (The microscope is not included -- we used our own; the kit comes with an adequate magnifier, however.)

Now, since crystals take a while to grow, we still have a few days left to report on the more involved experiments.  We were able to start learning right away with a few of the lessons, however, and you can easily plan them out so that you are learning something every day, and the longer activities take place in the meantime.  We are anxiously awaiting to see if our rock candy project turned out.  We'll be sure to update you on the blog and social media (via our Facebook page.)

While we wait, be sure to check out the Young Scientists Club to see how you can make summer fun and educational at the same time with this and other kits that offer hands on learning for all ages.  The Magic School Bus™ Growing Crazy Crystals ($19.99) is just ONE that they offer!

  19. Ooooh this is perfect for my 8 year old daughter!!!! She is always coming home with "gem stones" she's picked up here and there. Just last night when I was putting her to bed she pulled out a big rock with crystals that she had found at school and started showing all the different layers, colors, etc...
