Kick off Summer Reading Kids Will Love with Disney Story Central

Getting kids to read can be a challenge.  We implement a minimum of 20 minutes of reading a day, but we do have our days when it seems impossible to motivate.  Younger children, especially, may find it difficult to want to read, when they may not even be reading independently.  With 3 kids in the house who are either not reading or "beginning" readers, it sometimes seems like that 20 minutes is spent staring at books they cannot understand.

Yes, parents should be taking the time to read to their children, but what about those times when you can't or they want to read without you?  Disney Story Central's amazing collection of Disney stories -- based on the characters kids know and love -- is a tech-friendly way to get kids reading for 20 minutes each day (or more!)

Whether they love Big Hero 6, Phineas and Ferb (my boys' favorite), Frozen, Gravity Falls, or Mickey and Minnie, there is a book or two for both beginner and more advanced readers that your kids will get excited over.

If you're not already registered with Disney Story Central, it's easy to get started.  Go to the official website and log in with your existing Disney account (if you have one). Signing up is free, and you'll get a couple of titles for free to get started, as well.  You'll then need to download the app so that your child can start reading! We currently use this in our iPad, but you can use it on any compatible device!

I really like that all my kids can engage with this app, as it is set up with individual profiles for each kid.  They can access books based on their own individual reading level, and I can make sure that they have access to titles that fit their personalities and their stage in reading development.  It's a great addition to our 20-minute reading routine, and I can see this being an integral part of our homeschool program year-round, too!

And, starting TODAY, there is a new exciting reason to start using the largest collection of Disney digital stories: The Disney Story Central's 'Mid-Summer Light Reads' program!  This cool opportunity for kids to get involved in a virtual summer reading program will reward them with the chance to read themed stories for a chance to earn badges and unlock FREE books.

What does it cost?  It's surprisingly reasonable.  You can get unlimited access to all the books for just $7.99 a month.  Or choose to buy "tokens" that can be redeemed for books.  I can see benefits to both methods: the unlimited encourages kids to read as much as they can; the token method can be used as a reward system for doing chores or helping around the house.

Will you be checking out Disney Story Central this summer? I think you should!
