Little Colds are a Big Deal: My Family's Favorite Sniffle Stoppers

It seems that as soon as my kids wean, they get their first really bad colds. Usually around age two, they end up suffering through the sniffly nose, fever, cough, and general crankiness. As a mom, it can make you feel horrible to feel helpless against something so common as a virus!

And while I comfort my kids with all kinds of common methods (such as rest, fluids, and lots of cuddling), sometimes we need a little help to ease symptoms so they can sleep at night and regain their strength.

Reducing Fever

I can't tell you how many times nothing has worked like Children’s Advil®, which can be given to kids as young as 2. Not only does it do a job to get rid of fever, it helps with the achey legs and arms that my kids get when they are sick. We are particularly fans of the Sugar-free Dye-free Berry, Bubble Gum, because it won't stain the carpet. My youngest likes the flavor of the Blue Raspberry the best!

For smaller babies, we've confidently given  Infants’ Advil® White Grape, which comes with a small dosing syringe so you can safely administer it to children 6-23 months.

Dealing with Coughs

I'm a big believer in the power of Robitussin® DM, as it was the only thing I was able to take with a bad cough I developed last year. For the little ones, Children's Robitussin® DM Day/Night Pack is pretty handy to have on hand. It's a combo pack of two effective products, the Children’s Robitussin® Cough & Chest Congestion and Children’s Robitussin® Nighttime Cough. So you can be certain they'll be relief no matter if the sun is out or not.

Finally, you might also want to keep the great tasting grape flavored Children’s Dimetapp® Cold & Cough in your medicine cabinet, as well. Dimetapp® is another trusted name in the Knerl house, and my older boys couldn't get through their most recent bout of cold and sore throats without it. All of that coughing can keep the whole house awake if not treated!

What are your favorite ways to cure coughs and get kids rested up so that they can be their best? With the clear directions and dosing cups of the medicines made by Pfizer, I'm pretty sure that we can manage the next bout of sickness at the Knerl house, which usually involved 6 kids of all ages! Get more real-life tips and tricks for dealing with life at the #SickJustGotReal website, or follow them on Facebook! (You can also find all of these products at Target.)

  2. I like Robitussin for grown-up coughs; given that I'm asthmatic, a cold can leave me pretty wheezy and Robitussin really helps clear things out. (Eeewww.)

I also follow the doctor's advice about drinking a LOT of water when I've got a cold; the extra H20 also helps thin secretions (eeewww) and keep the airway moist. "The solution for pollution is dilution," the doc says.
