4 Ways to Build a Better Lunchbox This Back to School

Do you know what I miss? Lunchboxes. I didn't get to pack them much growing up, as I ate the school meal almost every day. I did admire the kids who packed a lunch, however, and -- to this day -- I try to make a special event out of a brown bag lunch.

For my own kids, who are homeschooled, you wouldn't imagine they would have much more luck than I did. But we do eat on the go quite a bit, making it essential to have easy-to-grab items on hand to stuff those lunchboxes!

How do I do it? I have my methods. See the 4 ways I'm determined to build a better lunchbox for my family, thanks to the yummy samples we were given to try from Made in Nature Supersnacks!

1. Satisfy the sweet tooth.  I don't know why parents don't ask their kids what they like. Not all kids will insist on candy for lunch. And if they do? There are lots of suitable options for the kid with the sweet tooth. Just ask me; I'm a super snacker who loves candy, but is totally in love with the Made in Nature Organic Dried Mangoes. I can't stop eating them, and it's pretty easy to understand why. They are chewy, sweet, tangy, and perfect. With no sulfur and amazingly ripe flavor that we just can't get from fresh mangoes in the middle of Nebraska, I'd love any lunch box that featured these for a snack or dessert!

If your kid has a food weakness, go ahead and exploit it. I'm pretty sure that there is a dried fruit option from Made in Nature that is suitable for their sweet tooth.

2.  Try lots of things. If you remember with envy those kids who did get to take lunch to school every day, some of them didn't have nice things to say about it. They were bored with the same, old lunch, and back in 1988, there wasn't exactly a ton of awesome snacks on the market that could sit in a lunch sack safely until noon. Thankfully, today's kids can enjoy a handful of super foods in a variety of colors and flavor profiles, like figs, sour cherries, and even some fantastic nut blends, featuring pepitos (pumpkin seeds) and pomegranate!

3. Bring enough to share. I know, I know... most schools don't allow sharing. But in our family, we have our own school and our own rules, and that means bringing extras for that friend we bring along unexpectedly on a field trip or for when the toddler gets cranky and needs a pick-me-up. With resealable bags that encourage multiple offerings, it's too easy to bring enough for everyone!

4. Remember mom. Grown-ups snacks aren't a much-celebrated thing, but I swear the Italian Espresso Toasted Coconut Chips were made just for me. How else can you explain the perfectly delectable, crunchy and bittersweet goodness that I can't put down? They are naturally sweetened with maple syrup and taste like the best cup of coffee -- ever. So, go ahead. Pack your own lunch. And toss in those coconut chips. You'll thank me later!
