Insurance is a must when you're a grown up. I know, because a good chunk of my monthly budget goes to insuring cars, my home, and farm! We have learned a lot about the process of signing up for insurance over the years, as well as about how your needs will change as time goes on.
The insurance I needed when I had one kid and an apartment is not the same insurance I need now with 6 kids and a farm. Sometimes, we aren't even sure that our insurance isn't quite what we need until we actually need it.
For example, this past year, we had a fire. It was terrible. An old pickup caught fire in my husband's shop, totaling the truck and ruining a lot of his workshop, tools, and household stuff. By the time the fire department had left after spraying everything down with water and form, it was a horrible experience that left us with medical bills, lots of lost possessions, and time away from our work and family events.
Had I been a bit more informed, I would have known that home insurance policies that most of us get doesn't cover damage from a vehicle. That's what vehicle insurance is for. But who would have thought we needed to cover a vehicle that wasn't' even running (it was a project)? I really wished I had understood just what was covered and how the claims process would have been like before we purchased. Would I have changed companies? I don't know. But being better informed would not have been a bad idea.
