6 Hotel Snacking Survival Tips for the Busy Professional

Travel is hard.

If anyone had told me 10 years ago how wiped out I would feel after coming back from a work trip, I wouldn't have believed them. After all, what sounds more relaxing than a night in my own bed, a clean room, and whatever I want to eat?

But after becoming a full-time writer, and having to travel all across the country for work, I've grown accustomed to the wear and tear the travel life can take on me. One of the most frustrating parts of the experience is snacking! I absolutely can't go without snacks. (I get cranky and my health suffers.) I find that it's more important than ever to bring a variety of hotel-friendly foods with me to nibble on as I need them.

One of my favorite new hotel snacks that are perfect for the mini-fridge are the Yoplait Mix-ins now available at Walmart. They aren't just for breakfast, and I actually prefer them as a quick snack between meetings and events. I also really like having them in the evenings for when I want a snack before bed. I've found them to be the best combination of sensible snack and indulgent treat

The yogurt products are comprised of the Yoplait quality I've enjoyed for years, with the added convenience of having the mix-ins right in the same compartmentalized container. The crunchy toppings stay crunchy, and the yogurt stays fresh. If you've always wanted the yummy flavors that come in many Greek yogurt products, but aren't a fan of Greek yogurt (I'm not), this will be right up your alley!

In addition to having the yogurt on hand, I've learned a few other tricks to keep common sense snacking options on hand when staying in a hotel. Among them:

1. Find a fridge. It's not necessary to splurge on a room with a kitchen or microwave every time you stay, but a mini fridge opens up the world to so many more options. Use it to stash your own healthy snacks that you bring with you or buy at the nearest grocery store. Keep your leftovers from restaurants at a safe temperature, too! Safe food is healthy food!

2. Try tech. If you're flying in and can't take yogurt with you, look for stores around you that sell the foods you need to stay fueled. I like to get settled into the hotel and search for grocery stores or pharmacies around me with my Google GPS. Remember that many stores offer order online for quick pick-up or even delivery to your hotel for a small extra fee or no fee at all!

3. Compliment with complimentary. Many hotels offer free breakfast, but I'm not a fan of eating at that time of day. It's OK to grab some fruit or other portable options for later in the day and keep them cool in your mini fridge. Pairing the Yoplait Mix-ins with a banana or other piece of fruit from the breakfast bar is one of my favorite ways to stay full.

(Not up early enough for breakfast buffet? I won't judge. Ask the front desk if they have bagged breakfasts. Many keep them ready to go for early travelers and will be happy to give you one.)

4. Cue the cutlery. Have you ever tried to eat yogurt with your fingers? Good. It's not recommended. Keep a few disposable cutlery sets in your travel baggage for whenever you need them. While many hotels do have silverware on hand, it may not be convenient to ask. Packing a plastic fork and spoon in your carry-on is never a bad idea.

5. Bring bags. Old food in waste baskets can stink up a room and ruin the ambiance of a good hotel stay. Bring a few extra plastic shopping bags in your carry-on for dirty clothes and all the trash that won't fit in those tiny trash bins. (Just don't mix them up!) Place them where they can easily be taken away by hotel staff. Miss room service? Find a common area in the hotel and ask if it's OK to put your trash there. Don't forget to recycle those bottles and cans!

6. Find fun flavors. The same snacks can get dull, especially if you travel a lot. Look for variations of your staple snacks to keep at the hotel. The Yoplait Mix-ins, for example, come in many fun and delicious flavors, including Very Berry Crisp, Mint Chocolate Delight, Salted Caramel Pretzel, and Coconut Chocolate Almond!

Having the right food on hand can help you stay focused and refreshed throughout the travel experience. Nourishment is so important when you are away from home!
