Review of PhillySwirl Ice Cream Cupcakes
Thursday, July 10, 2008
Last week, my husband and I both celebrated our birthdays (we were both born on July 3rd, can you believe it?)! The first thing we both asked for was an ice cream cake -- but there were none to be found at our local store. Disappointed, we went the traditional cake and ice cream route, until we heard about a fabulous, single-serving solution from PhillySwirl!Since the only thing better than cake is a cupcake, you can believe I squealed at the chance to try new PhillySwirl Ice Cream Cupcakes! Individual chocolate or white cupcakes topped with vanilla ice cream and the most deliciously light and fluffy swirled icing -- plus sprinkles: These are seriously to die for....
I ate one. Then another. (I snuck one in late last night while working...) They are just too good! And with 6 per pack, there's enough to share! (Or get the box of 12 for the best Birthday party EVER!) Did we mention that each cupcake is only 160 calories?
These stay nice and fresh in the freezer, thanks to a resealable plastic pack. Take one and leave the rest, but don't expect them to stay there forever... we had several "sneaky" cupcake eaters at our house!
This is going to change the way we do birthdays forever. And BBQ's. And Tuesdays. They're that good. Available at ALDI's, Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, and other super cool retailers around the country.
Want to get your hands on a box of these? The folks at PhillySwirl will ship one lucky winner a box of 12 directly to their door (no need to even leave the house, folks)! Just visit the PhillySwirl website, and leave us a comment on this post with a product that you would like to try (besides the cupcakes.) You have until Wednesday, July 26th at 11 pm CST to get your entries in. Contest subject to our official site rules and privacy policy. One entry per person, please.
Good luck!

Review of Glow Mama Drink for Moms!
Monday, June 23, 2008

With all the drinks on the market, is it any surprise that there is now one designed specifically for Moms and Moms-to-be? What would that "perfect" drink contain? Probably the same thing that our tested product, Glow Mama, has in it!

A very yummy, but light (I mean only faintly sweetened) drink chock full of good stuff, Glow Mama surprised me with it's healthy attitude! Made from kiwi juice, this totally original drink contains the best things for a pregnant or already Mommified gal on the go:
- kiwi, white grape juice, and filtered water
- 50% daily value of vitamin C
- 30% of your recommended doses of both Niacin and vitamin B6
- A bunch of B12 and folate (great for growing Babies!)
- Iron and calcium
(They also have a killer list of "mocktails" for those uber-responsible Mamas looking for something exotic to drink.)

Review of Kashi's Vive Probiotic Digestive Wellness Cereal
Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Looking at the contents of my first box of Kashi Vive, I was a little scared. I'll admit that "healthy" doesn't get me too excited on most days. The cereal itself looked very, very healthy. There were flakes, "sticks," and some tiny white round things. But I had to try them... I'm glad that I did!
The Toasted Graham and Vanilla variety of Vive was very different from anything I've tried before (including previous varieties of Kashi cereal.) A very crunchy texture and a healthy, wheaty flavor compared nicely with the subtly sweet taste of the little white things (which I found out were vanilla-dipped rice crisps -YUM!) Totally packed with fiber, the cereal filled me up after just one serving. I could see this helping my meal plan.
While there are way too many good things going on with this cereal to name them all, here are a few healthy highlights:
- Helpful bacteria Lactobacillus casei (the kind found in yogurt)
- A hint of ginger for assisting in digestion
- 20% of your daily calcium and vitamin D needs
- Concentrated broccoli extract (the same amount as a 1/2 cup of steamed broccoli) to stimulate the liver's cleansing activity
- 46% of your daily fiber needs!
You can buy this healthy (and tasty) new breakfast or snack option anywhere Kashi cereals are sold and at Amazon.com!

Review of Hershey's Bliss Chocolate
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
There's not too much to say about this one. Fast becoming one of my favorite indulgences, this affordable, grocery-available, rich and delicious chocolate comes in three scrumptious flavors:Creamy Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and Milk Chocolate Melt-away.....
We love it so much, we've been giving it away by the bagful! One piece is enough, but you'll swear you need more.
Hershey's Bliss is available at most grocers and big box stores for under $5 a 9 oz bag. Yum!

Review of Ziploc Twist N' Loc Containers
Monday, April 28, 2008

If you've suffered the experience of sending hubby to work with leftovers, only to have him LEAVE your good container somewhere in the breakroom (never to return), then you understand the importance of a good disposable container. Put those dessert whip tubs away, and check out my favorite new solution from Ziploc!
I was thrilled to try out the new Twist N' Loc containers after cooking up a batch of Oyster Stew. My hubby HATES the stuff, and needless to say, didn't want any chance of it coming open in the fridge or leaving any kind of odor behind. I poured the leftover soup into the new Twist N' Loc container, and with a few turns of the lid, I knew that it was properly sealed. (I even took a batch over to my parents' house with full faith in the lid staying closed.)
The containers are labeled with measurements to let you know how much is inside, and the container is built tough. With no concerns over a lid potentially popping off, I'm set to go!
Check out the full line of Ziploc storage containers at Ziploc.com!
(Thanks to BzzAgent for hooking us up with a few to try out!)

Review of Wholly Wholesome Natural Baked Goods
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
I'm a foodie, through and through.... BUT I wince at the words "Wholesome" and "Natural" when it comes to my desserts. I admit that I often eat what tastes good in lieu of what is good for me. (I'll admit to even feeding my kids better than I feed myself.)Wouldn't you agree that it would be nice to have a special dessert that not only tastes delicious, but is made from the finest natural ingredients? Now you can.
Wholly Wholesome has a new line of totally fresh, incredibly tasty, and wonderfully natural baked goods, and they are available at your local store! I was in heaven with their 100% Whole Grain Harvest Berry Crumble Cake. This fruity, nutty, sweet and satisfying dessert has the look of homemade, and was hugely popular with my friends and family. The best part was the 16 grams of Whole Grain per serving! It tasted like dessert, but had health stamped all over it! Blueberries, Cranberries and raspberries filled this kicky cake packed with antioxidants and flavor.
Maybe you're more of a cookie person. You'll love their line of organic mini cookies, freshly packed and ready to serve! Yummy, chewy bites of your favorite flavors (chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and snickerdoodle) will be the life of your next party! Kids and adults both loved our taste test and especially found the oatmeal raisin to die for. Each package is guaranteed to be fresh and tasty right out of the container!
If you were just waiting for an easier way to eat better, I think I've found the best excuse ever! Wholly Wholesome's yummy fare is available now at health food stores all over the country. Check their store locator for the nearest retailer to your home!Labels: 2008 Reviews, food and drink, health

Review of ProBugs Organic Whole Milk Kefir
Tuesday, March 25, 2008

I'm sure you are no stranger to all the portable yogurt products designed to excite young kids with their sugary flavors, bright packaging, and highly commercialized promotion. My kids scream for those yogurt drinks that offer more calories than calcium, and cost so much -- I question their value.
Maybe it's time for you to try a healthy alternative that the kids will love as much (if not more) than their popular counterparts: LifeWay Foods has introduced a line of organic whole milk kefir that my kids have gone ga-ga over! If the packaging isn't cute enough for you (they are totally and completely spill-proof), maybe the flavor names will get ya! Our favorites are the Orange Creamy Crawler and Goo-Berry Pie. Inspired by the live active cultures that reside in the yummy snack, ProBugs is healthy for little tummies and packs a dose of calcium that moms and dads might enjoy, too! This naturally sweetened probiotic snack is packaged in pouches that contain no phthalates or bisphenol-A (so you can be sure they are safe.)
This went over so well at our house, we are searching the health food market for more! For additional information on the ProBugs products, visit Lifeway Foods website, or find them at a store near you, using the handy Store Locator.

Review of Minky Nursing Covers by Sasha B. Designs
Thursday, January 10, 2008

Nursing under a drab blanket can make you feel more frumpy than nurturing. (And how many of us have had to use a coat, towel, or burp cloth to keep it discreet while feeding our baby?) Be prepared and stylish with the Minky Nursing Cover by Sasha B. Designs!
This is luxury for the milking mama! Soft and dreamy, the Minky is beautifully crafted and fancy enough to wear to a formal event! Plush on one side, satin on the other, this cover pulls out all the stops to keep you and baby comfortable and stylish! It snaps easily around your neck to keep busy hands from pulling it off, and the roomy neckline lets you look down to check on the progress of your little eater.
I loved the color choices (sage is my favorite), and the Minky material even has patterns to choose from: curly, dots and diamond. You'll appreciate the care that goes into each one of these beautiful covers that can become a lovey blanket for baby after they've weaned.
Perfect gifts come in perfect packages, and the Minky is no exception! Each cover comes folded and wrapped in a beautiful bow, tucked into tissue paper, and placed lovingly into a stylish gift bag! Baby Showers are cake with the Minky!

Review of Poi Wear Hi-Chair Bib
Monday, January 7, 2008

I was pleased to see that my youngest had finished all of his food! Pleased until I changed his diaper -- and found that 80 percent of that fresh-prepared food had ended up in his diaper or his shoes! How frustrating it can be to have shirts, pants, and socks blemished forever by your favorite red pasta sauce!
Bibs are not all created equal. Poi Wear has proven this with their cleverly designed full Hi-Chair Bib, designed to protect little bodies and favorite outfits from the devastation of self-feeding. Sized to fit kids 6 months to 3 years, the machine-washable bibs are almost too beautiful to use! Brilliant designs and high-quality cloth make this bib one of the fanciest items my child will ever wear. Good thing that the light-weight cotton is to easy to wash, and the water repellent lining keeps the clothes underneath from getting dirty! The length of the bib, along with the split at the bottom to cover legs, measures up where other bibs fall "short!"
With 50 different patterns and colors to choose from, there is a Poi Wear Hi-Chair Bib for everyone! Plus, you'll love the gifty organza bag and personalized gift card that comes with your bib. (Can you say perfect baby shower gift?)

Review of the One-Armed Cook
Tuesday, November 20, 2007

I was very excited to crack open the One-Armed Cook by Cynthia Stevens Graubart and Catherine Fliegel. I have often considered myself short of at least one arm, if not two. The authors of this interesting and useful cookbook had a treat in store for me!
Aimed at those who have just had a baby, this collection of recipes is varied in style and, at times, convenience. Those who have little cooking experience will find several items that can be whipped up with nothing more than a few minutes and a couple of store-bought items. More seasoned cooks will drool over the quick entrees that seem to easily come together with a little more prep and some fancier staples (artichokes, goat cheese, etc.)
The common sense approach to entertaining was clear-cut and geared towards those with the need for advance scheduling. My only thought while reading the chapter on Brunch Preparaton was, "People over anytime during the 6 months after a new baby is too soon!" And while I'm still convinced that others should be bringing ME food after a new addition, it is vital info for anyone up to the task.
The clever collaboration between Stevens Graubart and Fliegel is an interesting one. While not destined to be THE cookbook in my kitchen, it is very inspiring. With extra tips for dining out with baby and how to keep a new infant busy while cooking, it is a great gift idea for new moms. Those of us who have been around the Mommy-block for awhile may not find as much useful info, but the classy recipes will keep you making some fresh fare for a few weeks....
New mommies everywhere will enjoy this book. Available at Amazon and The One-Armed Cook website!

Review of Gerber Infant Foods with DHA
Monday, November 12, 2007

There has been a lot of talk regarding the added benefit of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to infant food in the past year. DHA is an polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid that is important for brain and eye development during baby's early years of growth, normally found in breastmilk and the Omega-3 fatty oils of fishes such as tuna and salmon. You can't get down the infant food and formula aisles of your store without seeing products claiming to be fortified with DHA.
Gerber has joined the health bandwagon with their own line of DHA purees and cereal. By added refined tuna oils to the contents of their 2nd foods, Gerber has been hoping to fill the gap during a time when most infants are lacking in getting thier Omega-3 fatty oils.
As infants grow during the last half of their first year, they continue to drink the same amount of DHA fortified formula or breastmilk. The need for additional calories most often comes in the form of finger foods or toddler cuisine. Since most of these do not contain additional DHA (unless you are fond of giving baby fishsticks), these new Gerber foods can be introduced to help keep baby on track for DHA consumption.
Whether or not you are on board with supplementing additional DHA-fortified foods to baby, the new flavors and quality of these foods are amazing. Our little one goes nuts over the new flavors: Banana Peach Granola, Apple Vanilla Mixed Grain, Pear Blueberry Oat, and Pear Strawberry Granola. (Plus I've tried them, and they pass my tastebud inspection with flying colors!)
For a more simple fare, try the Basic rice or oatmeal dry cereals with DHA. Available at your local grocer or anywhere Gerber products are sold.
(While you're visiting the Gerber website, check out the opportunity to win a Rainbow playset, or a $25,000 savings bond!)

Review of UtiliTEA Kettle
Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Are you a tea drinker? This time of year, I guzzle it (not very lady-like, I know) by the cup-fulls. Black tea, green tea, wellness tea -- you name it, I drink it! But I was getting a little irritated using my coffee maker to heat up my water. It just wasn't the right temp for optimal tea flavor.
The UtiliTEA Kettle is the quickest, easiest way I know to get your tea water to the perfect temp. Regardless of how you like it, the UtiliTEA will get it for you. Just plug in the base, set the filled kettle on the the base, adjust the knob to your desired temperature, push down the button and wait! In minutes, the kettle will boil your water to the perfect temperature and shut itself off!
The Kettle can be used to heat water for tea, cocoa, cider, and more. Stylish silver and black accents will match any decor. I love my UtiliTEA! (The kids love it too... my 9 year old can make her own Chai drinks without help from Mom or Dad!)
UtiliTEA heats up to 4 cups of water instantly. No whistles or drips. Available at specialty coffee and tea shops nationwide!

Review of Juicy Juice Harvest Surprise
Tuesday, September 25, 2007

I was shopping for fruit juice last week, when I stopped to take a look at the nutrition labels of our regular juice brand. I was stunned to discover the the #1 ingredient was water! The #2 ingredient was high-fructose corn syrup (sugar!) Wow! All this time I was doing what I thought was a healthy effort by buying fruit juices with vegetable juices mixed in. But I learned the hard way that all fruit-vegetable juice blends are NOT alike!
It took me about 10 minutes of careful scrutinizing to discover what I thought was the best choice based on nutritional information alone. Juicy Juice Harvest Surprise has 100% fruit juice (no sugars or watered down stuff) but has carrot and other vegetable juices mixed in! Each 8 oz. glass contains a 2/3 serving of veggies and a more than 1 serving of fruit! That's a way easy way to get my kids to take their veggies.
I tried it, and I think it's delicious. So now, Mommy has a way to get her veggies in too! For more information on all 3 yummy flavors (including grape and tropical), visit HarvestSurprise.com!

Review of Homemade Baby Organic Food
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

I had a dream. I was opening a container of baby food for my son, when I caught the list of ingredients with my eye: Organic pears. That was it. Nothing else. And it wasn't a dream.
Homemade Baby has done for parents and caregivers what I should have been doing all along. They take all the work out of providing a simple, nutritious, organic meal or snack for baby! Their 100% organic and kosher baby food is made fresh DAILY! That's right. The meal that you are feeding your little one was made with only the freshest organically-grown fruits and vegetables. Nothing else added. They even offer a "Meal Integrity System" that allows them to trace the food you feed your baby right back to the field where it was grown! (This is their Field to Fingers documentation system, and I think it is pretty nifty.)
You'll love the little grab n' go containers (that can also be safely microwaved.) Your baby will love the fridge-fresh varieties (Our favorite is squapples: squash and apples.) With several textures and varieties to choose from, you'll never have to think about mealtime again!
Homemade Baby will donate over 10% of the food they produce, as well as nutrition services, to some excellent charities! Available at your local health food grocer and select SuperTarget stores in the fridge section.
*** Have you heard? Homemade Baby now has a very cool Baby Tex-Mex variety for those babies who are starting to chew: containing corn, kidney beans, peas, carrots, and brown rice!

Review of Kashi TLC (Tasty Little Cookies)
Monday, September 10, 2007

This was a fun review. I usually hate anything whole grain, all-natural, and dark chocolate. I am a greasy, chewy, milk-chocolaty, fried and artificial junkie. But this cookie really threw me!
Kashi, the seven whole grain company, has developed a healthy snack I could eat every day. I tried the Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Chewy Tasty Little Cookie (TLC) yesterday, and I was floored! This little cookie (and I mean little) had 3g of fiber, no cholesterol, no trans fat or hydrogenated oils, and was made from 7 whole grains. Specifically: Hard Red Winter Wheat, Oats, Rye, Triticale, Barley, Long Grain Brown Rice, Buckwheat, and Sesame Seeds. Despite all this healthy stuff, the dark chocolate, chewy texture, and lightly sweetened flavor made it delicious!
Try it with a cup of coffee. Also comes in Oatmeal Raisin Flax and Happy Trail Mix (think cranberries, raisins, peanuts, coconut, and sunflower seeds.) Available at grocers and health food stores everywhere! For a free sample, go to http://www.kashi.com/and click on the "get your free snack" button!

Review of Mom's Best Naturals Cereal
Tuesday, September 4, 2007

I'm always proud when I stumble upon a product that I feel is very high quality and reasonably priced on my own. Not that I don't enjoy being introduced to amazing finds by others; I just really feel a sense of accomplishment when I make "friends" with something no one I know has heard of!
This is exactly what happened when I found Mom's Best Naturals cereal on my grocer's shelves for the first time last week! The family owned business has been around since 1919, and there is nothing artificial in their cereal! Made with no saturated fat, hydrogenated oils, or high fructose corn syrup, their stuff is so tasty! And the best part is how reasonably priced they are!
Not only is their cereal great tasting and good for your, but it is a part of an amazing effort to reduce the environmental effects that manufacturing can have on the world around us. 100% of the energy used to produce the cereal is purchased from wind turbines! They also recycle 99% of the waste produced by their factories! That's something to be proud of!
In yummy varieties like Toasty-O's, Raisin Bran, and Mallow-Oats, there is a cereal for everyone in your family. Visit the Moms Best Naturals website for more info!

Review of LUNA Tea Cakes
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Yummy.. that's the only way to describe these very different kind of snacks. Formerly a LUNA bar fan that got a little burnt out on eating a bar every day, I was up the for the challenge of trying out the new "tea cakes." In flavors like Berry Pomegranate (for longevity), Orange Blossom (for healthy skin), and Vanilla Macadamia (for mood balance), there really is no end to the possibilities for a healthy snack.
These all natural snacks are infused with tea from the Republic of Tea, and are the first non-soy product from the popular LUNA line. While small in size, they are chewy and satisfying. A sweet little 130 calories will get you through the afternoon (or whenever you snack), with a healthy alternative to those naughty candy or cookie cravings.
Full of vitamins, anti-oxidants, and healthy omegas, LUNA Tea Snacks have found a permanent home in my snack cabinet! Available at Amazon in boxes of 24 or Drugstore.com

Review of Healthy Handfuls Organic Snacks
Friday, August 10, 2007

I'll admit that eating organic isn't the most important thing I do for my family. But I sure like the idea of doing it as often as I can. Giving my kids some healthy but tasty organic snacks sounded like a great idea! We were fortunate to try out Healthy Handfuls Organic Snacks, and the reviews were very positive!
Our testers were at a small family gathering with 5 kids ages 2-8. We had each child test a sample of each of the following Healthy Handfuls snacks:
- Cheddar Cheese Lucky Duckies
- Lemon Vanilla Koala Krackers
- Oatmeal Raisin Crocodile Cookies
- Peanut Butter Python Pretzel Bites
- Chocolate Chip Chimpies
"The lemon vanilla cookies taste like the ones you get at McDonald's!"
"I like the peanut butter in the pretzels. They have good peanut butter like at the natural food store that you grind yourself."
"More Chocolate Chip Chimpies, please! I love them!"
"The cheese ducks are better than goldfish. They have more cheese."
There you have it, folks. For delicious snack foods that are certified organic, use no hydrogenated oils, no GMOs, no preservatives and contain no trans fats, you might want to give Healthy Handfuls snacks a try. Not only are they kosher, low in fat, and low in sodium, but they are pretty tasty too!
