The Amazing Spider-Man Appears At your Local Walmart

I can't believe the new Spider-Man movie will soon be here!  I was super excited to learn that Walmart would be doing some fun promotional campaigns surrounding the film, and since we are such big Spider-Man fans, we had to get involved!

We tried out the new "Augmented Reality" app for the iPhone as part of a movie tie-in.  The app, which is a bit hefty memory-wise, has some fun features you can use both in-store and at home.  Here are the highlights:

  • The app is free and can be downloaded by searching for "Web-slinger" in the app store.  (There is a prompt at the Walmart site to text to get the link to the app, but it directed me instead to download the regular Walmart shopping app.)
  • Once you download the app, you can play a game where you shoot at the bad guy (Lizard), as well as objects he throws at you.  The game is unique in that you can play it against any background; if you are in the store, the store will show up as the backdrop for the game.  If you are at home, you house will show up.  This was fun to play with the kids while waiting for the doctor today.  They had fun shooting webs at bad guys and using different scenes from our visit as the scene for their game!
  • There are also interactive opportunities to take your photo with characters from the game or to upgrade your weapons.  These must be done by scanning the promotional signage from inside your Walmart store, the Walmart ad, the tour truck, or the exclusive comic book.  Unfortunately for my kids, the signage in the store wasn't up yet.  (You should see it next to the DVD section already).  We did find one chance to scan for a weapon upgrade, as seen below.  (This is exactly how it looks from inside the app when using your phone's camera):

I think that overall, these kind of "augmented reality" apps have some amazing potential, provided you can find the various ways to make the participating more involved.  For now, my kids will have fun playing the game and learning more about the movie.  Check with your store to see if they have their signs up, if you are concerned about it and want to save time before heading in to interact with your apps bonus features.

Learn about all the Spider-Man related fun at the Walmart website, where you'll get info on the app, the "Secrets Unmasked" tour, wallpapers, coloring pages, movie trailers, and toys sold in-store.
