Reading is a big deal at our house. Because we homeschool, use a Charlotte Mason method to some of our learning, and enjoy reading ourselves, we find that there is always a good time to read to the kids. That's why I was excited to help share the news about LeapFrog Reading Month!
As much as we adore reading to our kids, we also like to foster a sense of independence and pride with our beginning readers. We have used online reading curriculum, toys, and DVD's to master this goal. We have also found tools like the LeapFrog Tag Reader to be beneficial. My boys like to use them each day to play games, sound out difficult words, and follow along as they sound out the text. My toddler watches his brothers use the Tag Reader; he giggles when they read the part about "fossilized dinosaur poop" in the book!
Since I'm so busy homeschooling all the kids and working from home, the Tag helps me make sure each of the kids gets 20 minutes of independent reading in a day. This time is in addition to time reading science or history over lunch or the classic novels that Daddy reads to the kids before bed each night. I'm happy to have some technology that is not only useful -- the kids find it fun, too!
The Tag has been especially useful for my reluctant reader, who is 7. He knows his phonics, but gets very self-conscious about his skill level. The time spent browsing through his Tag books has helped him with his confidence. We have since purchased a Spongebob book for the Tag Reader as reward for sticking with his pledge to read 20 minutes a day independently!
