Tax time is almost here, and for those of us getting a refund, there are some choices to be made on the best way to spend it. For us, we've always used it as an opportunity to upgrade our lives in important ways. We have a teenage daughter graduating from home school in about a month, and her college journey begins soon. Giving her a phone that's awesome enough to use as a young adult, along with a plan that's flexible and affordable, was the priority for this year's tax refund.
Walmart Family Mobile was one option we had looked at for awhile. It had a variety of plan options and phones, and the single-line monthly plans were right within our price range. I headed out to discover the best choice for my soon-to-be independent daughter. I wanted her to have the freedom to use her new phone as needed, but with some important safeguards so she didn't end up paying too much.
My local Walmart had a nice, big display with all of the Walmart Family Mobile plan info, phones, and accessories in the electronics department. I was there to purchase the LG K7 Smartphone. It was priced at $49.88 (on Rollback from $89.88) and they had plenty of phones on hand. While there, I could also purchase the SIM KIT.
The fantastic thing about the SIM Kit was that I didn't have to bring my own SIM card, and there was no activation fee. Since Family Mobile bills you later, you only have to pay $19.88 when you sign up. (There are two SIM Kits available, the regular size and the Nano. Be sure to check to see which one your phone model requires.)
Then, it was time to pick my plan! I knew that I wanted to go with the Plus Plan, since we use our phones a lot, and my daughter would be using the phone to stay in touch with friends and family while at college. The Walmart Family Mobile Plus Plan was our winner, as it includes Unlimited Talk, Text, and Data (which includes up to 10GB of 4G LTE, then 2G). Plus, it also came with a free VUDU movie credit every month! That means my daughter could watch a new-release or classic movie valued at $7 each month in her dorm room with friends.
You can imagine that I was very happy to learn that this plan cost just $49.88 a month for each line. That was definitely doable with our budget and a great way to get my daughter a headstart in managing her phone use in college. With tax time here now, it was the perfect time to start doing things right for this fall!

As the oldest, she has very big plans for becoming a nurse, but she is also very sad about leaving her "buddies". Taking pictures, chatting via email and social media apps, and using video apps to reconnect are all important activities she'll continue to do after she moves into her dorm this year. The $49.88 a month plan allows her to do all that without fears of a data overage. No more having to choose if she has enough left on her plan to show her brothers she cares!
