Review of Flicka 2 on DVD

We've been watching quite a few movies lately, ranging from the fabulous to the goofy.  Just last night, we watched one that made me cry -- it was beautiful, touching, and had an amazing cast.  What was it?  Flicka 2

Picking up where the first movie left off (but not in a way that you would ever need to see the first one to know what was going on), Flicka 2 featured several great talents (Patrick Warburton, Clint Black, and newcomer Tammin Sursok ).  Focusing on a city girl who is forced to move out to the Wyoming countryside to live with a Dad she never knew, it blends a turbulent family plot with a sweet story of a girl who finds her way via the "unbreakable" wild horse Flicka.

What did we like about this movie?  Pretty much everything.  The story moved along at a nice pace, keeping even my 5 year old son entertained.  The love interest (a boy who works on the ranch) is mild, and the villian is noticeably "bad" but not frightening or over the top.  While the relationship between the girl and her horse is what makes the story go, it's the blossoming bond between her and the Dad she longed to know that really touched my heart.  The softspoken but strong father is played well and works in this movie.

The only thing I didn't absolutely love was the super-sweet ending.  Given the fact that I'm an adult and don't expect any movie to turn out perfectly, I found it to be a little unbelievable.  It was great for my kids, however, who still think "happily ever after" is the only way to be.  For that reason, I don't consider it a con, just an observation from an adult who knows how the world really works.

This film had me teary and happy at the same time.  I was surprised at how engaged I was, even without being particularly fond of horses.  My horse-loving daughter finished the film, and ran right out to see her own horse.  It's the perfect film for any young "wild at heart" movie lover.
