Review of Heirloom Audio Productions: Cat of Bubastes

We have been big fans of Heirloom Audio Productions and their audio dramas for awhile now. We have already reviewed Beric the Briton and The Dragon and the Raven. We now want to tell you about how much we loved their newest CD: The Cat of Bubastes!

This 2-disc CD set contains a full-length audio adventure, broken into tracks. You can choose to listen to the entire 2+ hour drama at once, or you can break it up into listening sessions. Whenever we listen to an Heirloom Audio Production, we split it up into two listening sessions (one per CD) and space them close enough together so that the kids remember the first half. In today's world of binge watching TV, it just makes sense to give them the entire story in one or two sessions.

We packed this CD set into our travel bag on a recent trip to Kansas City. Since the drive was 3 hours and 45 minutes, we had plenty of time to enjoy it. The kids were a captive audience, something that you might find useful the first time you have your kids listen to an audio-only adventure. Since kids have a hard time not multitasking, we have been allowing them to close their eyes and imagine the story OR draw pictures along with the audio. They are not allowed to do other things, however. Kids really do need to be trained to enjoy audio if they have been exposed to too much multimedia, and these adventures are a great start that captivates kids and adults right away!

In this tale, there are several famous voice actors that really bring things to life. In addition to the detailed narration, characters from the classic G.A. Henty tale The Cat of Bubastes is told with gripping music, sound effects, and dialogue. Your kids may recognize the voices of the characters from films like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Ben Hur, and The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as the popular and long-running Doctor Who series.

The Cat of Bubastes is one of Henty's most popular tales, and it's easy to see why. In this lively retelling listeners are transported to Ancient Egypt to hear the story of a young prince and his mentor being enslaved. As the trials get heavier and heavier, God shows up as a giver of grace and new opportunities. I really feel like this story speaks to anyone who has experienced God's love or seeks to live in it daily!
