Celebrate Teletubbies: Bubbles on DVD with Straw Bubble Paint Project!

*This post is part of a sponsored campaign for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.

Do you know what I love most about summer? The chance to do more creative, messy projects with my kids. And while my kids spend a lot of time drawing, sketching, and creating games with the computer, it is the old-fashioned craft that they get most excited about.

We're going to show you a very simple bubble paint project you can do with your kids ages 5+, but first, I have some fun news in the entertainment world to tell you about!

Teletubbies are lovable, colorful, and curious creatures that I remember watching with my daughter almost 16 years ago! They have been around a long time (20 years, in fact), but they keep getting better. June 20th official marks the release of the newest Teletubbies title: Bubbles! This DVD has had my 3-year-old amazed. We hadn't watched much of the Teletubbies with him yet, and unlike my other kids, I wasn't sure if his personality was going to be geared toward it.

Boy, was he captivated! As Manny's speech is a little delayed, I wondered how he would interact with the DVD. He commonly uses words for sound (onomatopoeia) like "crash" "splash" and "zap." Having him watch a few episodes of Teletubbies has already increased some of his communication skills to include colors and phrases he had shied away from before.

We have been working very hard on his vocabulary, but I think at times he gets overwhelmed. the slow and deliberate pacing of the show really held his attention, and I was intrigued by the way he talked to the screen and became involved in the activities that the Teletubbies were doing.

The "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" episode was his favorite. He sang along quietly, actually setting his sippy cup down to verbalize. We were also happy to see that there was an app code inside the DVD for us to use for even more play. My son loves using the tablet, and anything educational that engages him is a big win for us.

Manny has also been adopting "babies" lately. Any smallish stuffed animal or toy becomes his, and he rotates through them every naptime and bedtime to have just one "baby" with him when he sleeps. We were sent a couple of the Teletubbies plush along with our review copies, and guess what? He scooped them up from the mailing box and quickly claimed one for his own.

His new "baby" comes out to cuddle whenever he's watching the Teletubbies, too!

Manny has really grown to love the Teletubbies, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised. All of my other kids adored them between the ages of 2 and 4. They have always displayed qualities that we value as a family, including caring, empathy, teamwork, and curiosity. There are many developmental benefits of the program, too. You can see them all here!

Now, on to our craft! While Manny was busy watching the new Bubbles DVD, we wanted to give the older kids something to do. This craft is really designed for kids ages 5 and up (or at whatever age they can be trusted to blow out through the straw, instead of sucking in.)

You'll need:
  • A small bowl
  • 2 tablespoons concentrated dish soap
  • 4 tablespoons acrylic paint
  • 1/3 cup water
  • Paper (thicker paper works best, we used construction paper)
  • coffee stirrers (one for each child and color)

Mix the soap and the paint together first, so that it is smooth. Slowly add water and stir with a fork or whisk.

Using the coffee stirrer, dip one end into the mix, and then remove from the mix. Holding the stirrer over your paper, blow gently. You should see a few clumps of bubbles fall from the stirrer to the paper. These are not large bubbles so much as clusters. It's fun to see how many bubbles come out at once!

You can wait until the bubbles pop on their own, or help them along with the end of a clean stirrer. (Popping bubbles is fun!)

Layer with multiple colors (use a straw for each) and allow to dry before hanging. The color will brighten as it dries.

Not happy with the deepness of your color? Add a tiny bit more paint, checking for consistency of the solution. If you ever find that the bubbles aren't forming, adjust with a bit more soap. It's a delicate balance, but there is no exact formula.

Learn how to do a bubble straw paint craft and see why our son loves the new Teletubbies: Bubbles DVD!

This is a fun activity to do with kids outside or anywhere you don't mind getting a little messy. Hang pictures outside to dry in the sun, if you're short on time!

And remember, Teletubbies is celebrating 20 years of Hugs in 2017, so they will be doing lots of fun activities and events. You can find out about everything they have in store via their website and social handles on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

  11. Dipsy, because he seems to be the least popular one, so I think that he should get just as much attention as the other teletubbies.
