Making Learning EQ Fun: Stan Lee's Kids Universe App for Children

This post is part of a sponsored campaign for Playing Forward. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.

I often cover the topic of EQ (emotional intelligence) in my articles for journalism outlets. It's sad that we even see this as a problem today, but it is. Kids are growing up to become adults without some of the most basic emotional coping and relational skills needing to be happy and thriving people. Empathy and communication traits are more easily learned as children, and that's why I'm so happy to tell you about the new app from my children's most adored hero Stan Lee!

Mr. Lee, who has blessed us with years of comic art, movies, and those amazing acting cameos is the name behind Playing Forward’s Stan Lee’s Kids Universe app. Designed to put children in the story so that they can act out social situations as a dinosaur (named Dex T-Rex) and choose the best outcome for working with others, this app is so much fun! Children won't even realize that they are learning much-needed life skills, but parents will see the opportunity right away. It's a very brilliantly-designed tool that can easily stand in for gaming/screen time during the day -- or parent-led story time at night.

The app allows you to play in AR (augmented reality.) This means that when you turn the phone or tablet screen from side to side, the screen moves with it. It's like you're really inside the story! The story itself is a lovely tale about a dinosaur with what adults would call impulse control. This is a common challenge for little kids, and as the dinosaur starts to see what happens when he doesn't control his actions, he becomes sad and has to resolve things. The app walks through kids making things right again, which is an amazing lesson!

My 5-year-old played with this app in story mode. It's easy, even though he doesn't read yet, to push the sound button and have each page read to him. Moving on to the next part of the story, just requires kids to swipe! The dinosaur can be personalized, and coins can be purchased for an even more interactive experience with additional content. This is a very simple and engaging app that offers a big learning opportunity for the pre-K crowd!

Playing Forward didn't create this app blindly. They based it on expert-led research and beta testing with over 300 kids in 18 classrooms across North America. This app is one of three based on book characters, such as Maxi the Taxi Dog and Lizzy's World -- in addition to this new one based on Dex T-rex from Stan Lee's Kids Universe series. Playing Forward company founders have had years in the entertainment industry, working on over 100 films and shows, so they know what kids like!

Snag the app here. It's available for iOS 11 and higher through the Apple store and Android platforms through the Google store.

  1. Oh boy and did you see what happens when you touched Dex and then when you touch the butterfly. What is that? The same yet a different story all in one. Poor stick. Poor caterpillar. Happy stick. Happy caterpillar. Empathy circuits are in full swing.
