Nighttime stories are so in style right now at my house. My 6-year-old doesn't stop asking for me to read to him, and bedtime themes are his favorite. That's why, when we were offered a chance to review the adorable new HMH Books title Good Night Little Blue Truck, I couldn't say "no!"
This book is adorable. Since we live on a farm with many of the same animals in the story -- as well as an old, blue truck, so many of the phrases and words and pictures really resonated with my boys. I especially liked that the truck was a character in the story, being helpful and giving the animals protection from a storm, then driving them home safely when it was time to go to bed.
Alice Schertle does an amazing job of bringing together rich prose that repeats just enough to make it engaging for kids, without being too silly or talking down to kids. The illustrations, done by the late (and very talented) Jill McElmurry warm my heart with their rich tones and loving displays of how the characters interact. I really can't get enough of the pictures. It's one of our favorite things about the Little Blue Truck series! Parents and caregivers will enjoy these as a read-aloud favorite. I never tire of reading them again and again to my little guys.
