Review of What to Expect the First Year by Workman Publishing Company

I remember looking at What to Expect When You're Expecting almost daily when I was pregnant with each of my 4 children. While not an exhaustive reference for the expecting mama, it was fairly detailed, and I was grateful to have it. I have also been a huge fan of the sequel in the best-selling series: What to Expect the First Year.

Since every child is different, it is hard to know what is just personality, and what could be a medical concern. This book has gone far to relieve some of the anxiety that the first year of parenting can bring. How high of a fever is too high? How many dirty diapers should my baby have? How is formula feeding different from breastfeeding? How do I handle poor sleeping or eating habits? The list goes on and on.

This book is one that will have a handy place on your shelf well throughout the first year. Even if you aren't in total agreement with all the parenting issues that the authors discuss (pacifier use, co-sleeping, discipline techniques, etc.) you will be sure to appreciate the universal bits of knowledge that are necessary for the health and happiness of any small child. The first aid section, for instance, is thorough and accurate. I am also very impressed with the unique perspectives on sibling rivalry, special-needs children, and multiples.

Most every mom (and dad) I know have used this book at least a time or two. Even more of them use it regularly! The question-and-answer format is totally user-friendly and makes for lighter reading on heavier subjects. Get your copy today at Amazon and other book outlets!
