Review of Sweeney's Snake Repellent

I wasn't planning on writing about anything lawn and garden-related until the end of the month. (That was what my editorial schedule dictated.) Then I saw 5 snakes out back by where my kids played, and I thought maybe it was a good time to test out the Sweeney's Snake Repellent early.

I'm glad that I did.

This product exceeded my expectations (and my husband's.. which is hard to do.) It's a bag of little tiny pellets that you shake on the ground where you want snakes to avoid. It's a natural product (made from clove oil and some other non-toxic ingredients), and it smells very sweet -- almost sickeningly so. Snakes don't like it, and when you apply it to the yard, near swing sets, or where you want to grill out this weekend, they stay away! And it works!

The bag is easy to open, and you don't need to touch it with your hands or use any dispensing tools. (There are little holes in the top, and you "shake" it right out of the bag -- like a salt shaker. We applied it to the areas we wanted the snakes to stay away from (which, if it were up to me, would be the whole yard and then some!) Right after I applied it to my yard, I saw a few snakes come up to the area, but not stick around. We haven't seen a snake in those areas again..

The product is made by Sweeney's and is supposed to last up to 30 days. We've had it applied for a little over a week, and so far, I'm very impressed! You can see all the products Sweeney's offers at it's website: www.wrsweeney.com

Wanna Win? We have three of the 4-lb Shaker bags to give away (valued at $14.99 each) for our readers! 1. I once took a snake out of the DRYER..apparently entered through the vent. Thrice in the suspended ceiling of the office and once under the sofa. But I think they annoy me most on my back porch!

  2. When I was a little girl, I lived out in the country. Most times I was always barefoot, so one day I was playing as unusual and I thought I stepped on a hose. I looked down to see I had stepped on a adult water moccasin. Thankfully it was as scared as I was and slithered away.

  3. Around here, it's garter snakes. I have a friend who would LOVE me if I won and gave this to her. Her house's entire foundation is one huge snake haven. One day, she was in her basement and saw a weird "cord" hanging from the floor joists above. Went to grab it and realized it was alive. She aged 10 years that day!

  5. I've got mainly Californa King and Gopher snakes, but a ton of other lesser known... Our area also has major rattlesnakes, I'm crossing my fingers that they aren't in my immediate area because of all of the Ca King and Gopher snakes! I was walking with a friend in a local botanic garden near a rocky area and came across a HUGE rattler laying all streched across the path in the sun. He was as big around as my wrist and well over 6' long! I gasped (I was in front) and she ran into me! We then both VERY QUICKLY reversed all the way down the hill and went to the front gate to report him. He was gone by the time we got back with the keeper... we now keep even closer eye on where we are walking!

  11. You saw FIVE??!?!?! Oh my!

We haven't dealt with any snakes yet at this house, but we have lived here less than a year so I don't know what to expect. At our old house we had garden snakes and some unidentified yellow snakes that freaked me out.

  12. We had a baby copperhead in our backyard last year and I was so terrified that I climbed up our playset and wouldn't come down until it was killed and the body was removed from our yard. Snakes terrify me!!

  15. My fiance wants me to retire to a rural setting in the South. I am a city girl. I once visited him for 2 weeks at this house. I was standing at the door, looking out over the woods, brushing my teeth. Suddenly I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. It was to me a giantic snake-- to otehrs maybe not so big. After that I stayed in the house most of the remainder of the visit. When I had to leave I would run and jump in the car. Now I am suppose to retire to this place ! If I could win this product, try it, and not see a snake on my next visit it might save our relationship.

  16. We live an hour away from any hospital in Wyoming. With 2 young children(3 and 10)my husband and I and my parents it is essental to keep the rattle snakes as far away from the houses as possible. We deal with rattle snakes and bull snakes all summer and have had them on the door steps of our houses. This would be great to have!

  19. One day, I went out to get the mail. I returned to see a baby diamond back trying to get in my front door! I am really glad I latched that puppy! Anyway, I screamed, of course and ran to the front of the house (barefoot). Trying to get into the garage was a green tree snake! He was scared of me (the other was NOT), so he started slithering fast up against the garage, so I screamed some more and started running down the street! I guess I'm a dork and that's not the way to get them to go away, but they eventually left. Sheesh!
