What is the First Ingredient of Your Favorite Cereal? (#Giveaway)

I try to watch what I eat, especially when it comes to avoiding unnecessary "fillers."  I remember the first time I checked the ingredients on a box of cereal in the store as a child, and saw the sugar was the first ingredient!  I couldn't believe that there was more sugar in my favorite breakfast that anything good!

As part of an effort to raise awareness about what you eat, General Mills has asked that I share a bit about their new packaging for many of their cereals:

"Now every cereal with the white check has more whole grain than any other single ingredient with the same great taste. You will see “whole grain” as a part of the first ingredient on the ingredient list, indicating that whole grain is the first and most prevalent ingredient."

That makes it easy, doesn't it?  Many of my favorite cereals already contain whole grain as the first ingredient, including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios® and Total®.  

It's also important to remember that many claims on the front of your cereal box may be misleading.  The only sure way to know if grains are indeed "whole grains" is to check the ingredient label.

General Mills also offers a way to help with choosing products with whole grain -- “Fast Lane for Whole Grain,” an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.
