Last month, we told you about how my family was going to step up their game when it came to taking care of their "whole mouths" and would be participating in a Listerine and Reach Healthy Habits for a Lifetime Oral Challenge. We were already pretty fabulous when it came to brushing. Flossing and rinsing? Not so much.
I have good news to report (for my kids, anyway.) While I fell woefully short of rinsing every night, I did find that I rinsed more than usual, thanks to the mildness of the Listerine Total Care Zero. My dentist had already recommended I use this, since it contains no harsh alcohol. I had put off using it, however, because I didn't really believe it could clean well and not burn. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it worked very well, and it was gentle on my sensitive gums! I will definitely be using this more.
The kids, on the other hand, were 100% faithful to their routine. They brushed, flossed, and rinsed when needed, and they burned through 3 bottles of the Listerine Smart Rinse like they were gallons of milk. It didn't hurt that the packaging has cartoon characters they were familiar with; we used up the Phineas and Ferb first, then the Batman, then the regular bottle. (Try as I might, the Barbie bottle was a no-go. We gave that to friends, because "boys don't use Barbie stuff, Mom.")
I think that I am happy with how the challenge went. My kids have done the routine enough times that I know it will stick. I'm no longer asking them to do anything more than "brush and flush" at night (which is code for "use the potty and get your teeth routine done.") They use the right amount of the rinse, thanks to the measuring functionality of the bottle, and all I have to do is make sure they put everything away so that baby doesn't get into it. (Remember, flouride can be dangerous to small children.)
We are adding the Smart Rinse to our routine for good. The other products (like the Reach toothbrushes) we will buy when they go on sale to have on hand when we need them.
I encourage you to learn more about how you can add these fun and functional products to your family's oral care routine by visiting the Walmart website!
