How to Price Your Kids' Clothes to Sell on eBay

If you have kids, you know how quickly they grow. One day everything seems to fit fine and literally overnight you notice their pants are too short as are their shirt sleeves. You might just consider pitching the clothes in the garage sale pile or donating to charity, but you can make some money selling them on eBay. Best of all, that money can go toward your kids' new clothes.

How to Optimize Your Starting Price

A good rule of thumb for eBay used to be to start auctions at .99 to generate interest and more bids. However, as the market becomes saturated with kids' clothes, this technique doesn't work as well anymore. Your item may just sell for .99 if you use this strategy.

Instead, set the price at the minimum amount you would like to make (and be realistic). For instance, if you have Gymboree and Gap clothing, a reasonable amount might be $7.99 as a starting bid for a Gymboree dress in good condition or a two piece outfit. You can also set a buy it now price for the price you would really like to get, say $14.99 for an outfit.

Remember that bigger kids' clothing, say sizes 3 to 6, generally sells for a higher price. Those items for size 2T and under generally sell for less because there are so many available and people receive those sizes as gifts.

How to Optimize a Fixed Price Listing

If you don't want to part with your items for $7.99, let's say, another option is to set a fixed price listing for 30 days. If you have an outfit that you want to sell for $16.99, list it at that price for 30 days. If it sells, great. If not, you know next time you should lower the price to be more competitive.

Finally, remember that kids' clothing on eBay largely follows the stores' shopping cycle. February and March are good months to sell your spring and summer clothing, and August and September are great for fall and winter clothes. Good luck!
