A long time ago, when my husband and I were first married, we thought it would be neat to work with missionary friends overseas to help their local friends sell their wares to people here in the States. The logistics of such an endeavor (and the fact that we started a large family very soon after that) prevented us from being able to realize that dream. I'm happy to see at least one company taking the idea of getting hand-made artisan crafts from all over the world into the hands of those who will appreciate it (and pay fair wages to the artist). That company is NOVICA (in associate with National Geographic), and we had the chance to order a few items to see how well they were made!
First, I found the site to be amazing. You can choose a gift by price range, country of origin, category, or even by a new feature: collection! The new NOVICA Curation effort - a feature that lets everyone create their own curated collections of products, with the option to add mood shots from our ever growing image library - is almost like Pinterest… only more responsive, and all for a great cause!
I ordered several items: a handbag, a ring, a scarf, and two leather bracelets - all for under $150 shipped from all over the world. It took a couple weeks for the items to arrive, but it is more affordable to ship several items from the same country. Items from the same geographic location also tend to arrive together.
All of the gifts were beautifully wrapped. (See the purse I ordered below). They are already set to be given as a thoughtful gift to loved one!
The detail in the actual handbag was brilliant. It had modern lines and great color -- as well as little touches that made it unique to the region it was made. I love the pompoms! (Each item that I ordered also came with a gift card from the artist and more information about the country I shopped.)
I loved my shopping experience at Novica, and I will not hesitate to go there again for a thoughtful gift for a hard-to-shop for friend or relative. Your gift will be truly unique!
Stop by NOVICA today and check out their Curation feature. While your'e there, you can enter to win a trip to Machu Picchu, find unique gifts for men, gifts for the executive, and even chess gifts.
Wanna Win? We are giving one lucky reader (2) two gifts we ordered from NOVICA:
