I understand the value of having art in your child's life. I'm just not that great at teaching it. And so, as a homeschool parent, I have given in to the fact that I likely will outsource any of the "how-to" half of art, and stick mainly to sharing the historical context of art with my kids.
That's where quality resources like the new Drawing with Mark DVD come in. This is an amazingly simple way to get kids into the basics of drawing without making it feel like work. Even children with them most primitive drawing skills can do well with this program and learn foundations for solving spatial problems in math and everyday situations, as well!
More on the DVD:
Hosted by Mark Marderosian, a respected professional cartoonist and illustrator with over 25 years of experience Drawing with Mark teaches children of all ages the fundamentals of drawing. There are two separate DVDs each containing two episodes of Drawing with Mark (Reach for the Stars and A Day with the Dinosaurs) plus (We All Scream for Ice Cream and Happy Tails). Here is an example of one drawing that my 8-year-old did while watching the DVD, which guides children step-by-step through the process of drawing an object (in this case an ice cream truck) while it teaches subject matter surrounding the object (such as the history of ice cream!)
Not bad, huh?
I can't stress enough how this DVD gives children of ALL abilities the confidence to just draw... putting their attempts down on paper in a skillful manner, even if they haven't had any experience drawing before. This is also a recommended program for kids with learning or physical challenges that might have kept them from doing well in other art activities.
My 10, 8, 6, and 3-year-old sons all sat down and became engrossed in this DVD one evening. They were fully entertained, learned something about the world around them, and produced individual works of art that far exceeded anything they had done from simply following a step-by-step drawing lesson from a book.
You can find both the "We All Scream for Ice Cream" title (which we reviewed) and "A Day with Dinosaurs" for under $15!
