Fun Fruit Pairing: Delicious Pecan Pie Apple Dip!

My late night snacking had gotten the best of me...

After finding that I was completely bored with plain apples, and seeing that my husband had bought another pecan pie from the Walmart bakery, I hastily spooned the pie filling onto an apple slice and discovered what would become my ALL TIME FAVORITE FRUIT DIP -- ever.

With a little refining, I had a recipe fit for sharing at holiday parties this year (and years to come.)  Here's how to whip up a tasty little dip that probably know one else will bring, and it's impossible to mess this one up.

You will need:

  • One prebaked pecan pie (I buy mine from Walmart -- sometimes on a discount)
  • One carton of heavy whipping cream
  • One container of real sweetened whipped cream from a can (I like Reddi-Whipp). It is NOT OK to use an oil-based topping like the kind you find in the freezer; this will not work.
For every TWO servings of dip (a serving is about 2 tablespoons), you will need to mix up 1/4 cup whipping cream, 1 small slice of pie (about 1/16 of a typical bakery pie), and a palm-sized dollop of the sweet whipping cream.  Combine very well in a blender.  As you can see below, I used my Magic Bullet machine; any processing appliance with a blending blade will work.

Combine until well-blended.  You may have chunks of pecans, but try to make sure the pie crust is mixed well throughout with no clumps.

Refrigerate for at least an hour.

Spoon into a serving bowl OR individual ramekins for serving.  This looks yummy in small cups with 3 pecans from the leftover pie (if you have any) arranged in a star formation.

For extra yumminess, put the pie under a broiler or toaster oven and get the pecans on top very toasty!  After the pie has cooled complete, you may use it in the recipe above.  The warmth will bring out the flavor of the nuts and further caramelize the brown sugar.  It's soooooo good!

Serve with various colors of apples for a super sweet holiday treat that's a little better for you than pie with ice cream!
