There aren't too many movies these days that give me what my daughter would call -- "the feels." I love movies that are fun, but when family drama is thrown in, it can sometimes become overwhelming.
The Identical, however, is a different kind of family drama. When a poor family is forced to give up one of their twin sons to a barren pastor and his wife, the son tries to follow the path his dad lays out for him -- in spite of his ability and destiny to rock and roll!
Based very loosely on what it may have been like had Elvis been a long-lost twin, (there are scenes that are very reminiscent of Elvis' documented life), this story is sweeter and maybe even a little sadder. The cast is quite captivating; Ray Liotta does an amazing job of portraying the pastor father who ages before our eyes and presents a strong resolve throughout the film. The rocking son is played by Blake Rayne a newcomer for me, but very, very talented. Ashley Judd, Joe Pantoliano, and Seth Green also star in this film.
With the music, the family dynamics, and the big revelation at the end, it's definitely a roller coaster ride of a film. It's rated PG due to some themes that may be a little over some children's heads (like the separation of the family, acts of teen rebellion, and a dramatic storyline.) All of my kids ages 1 and up watched with us; they got to see mom and dad tear up a bit, but they did enjoy the film!
