Teaching Kids the Art of Never Giving Up: Our Review of 23 Blast

Kids tend to give up easily. What am I saying? I tend to give up easily.  So when we were able to view one of the newest films to hit DVD with an emphasis on trying, living, and trying again, I had all the kids sit down with me and the hubby, and we watched.  We were so very inspired.

Like many sports movies, 23 Blast takes a "based-on-actual-events" approach to showing how the underdog can win.  But unlike so many we see, this chooses a very unbelievable (albeit very true) story to recreate.  It's the tale of a boy who loses his sight after an infection and loses his identity and purpose as a result.  It is only after his family, a disabilities coach, his football coach, and some peers rally around him, that he gets the nerve and faith to play high school football -- even without his eyesight!

As a parent, there were times that this film was more than heart-wrenching.  While you realize that you would be very lucky and blessed to have your child survive an illness that threatens life, you also see that blindness is devastating for everyone in a family.  It requires so much change, patience, and grace -- all things that I fall short on, it seems.

Like most films, there are a few stray story lines that add dimension to the lives of the main characters, but this one really seems to keep things tight, and my younger kids were drawn in to over an hour or intense viewing with few wiggles and lots of questions.  It was a great film for all ages.

Note: This film has a PG-13 rating due to scenes with alcohol consumption by minors. You may or may not have talked to your kids about drinking, but it is a brief theme in this film.  As many high school kids indulge, it's always been my view to talk to kids about it rather than ignore it.  Let them know your standards, and allow them to see the consequences (such as in a film like this).  Healthy discussion can go a long ways in building trust with these sensitive topics.

  1. I would do a little more research on the movie, but I think I might be able to watch it with my oldest daughter. She's 8 and I'd want to make sure the movie isn't too mature for her. The story sounds great, though.
