There are over 83.3 million dogs living in the U.S. After discovering that 30 to 40 percent of those dogs have a problem with barking excessively (including the dogs of my next-door-neighbors), First Alert for Pets developed the First Alert Bark Genie Automatic Ultrasonic Bark Deterrent. We put this small but powerful product to the test this month to see if it would stop the annoying, ridiculously incessant, yapping of my Mom's (who was is my next-door-neighbor) small dog.
What is it?
It's simple. Just put in a 9Volt battery (not included), set it on the frequency you choose (we started low) and wait for your dog to bark. If you're dog is like my mom's dog, he'll likely be barking before you ever step foot in the door. Richie -- the pup we tested this on -- was one of those "ankle biters" who yapped and growled and jumped on my toddler son, scaring him every time we visited.
Does it work?
After turning on the Bark Deterrent, he tilted his head to the side (that's because an ultrasonic, pet-friendly frequency emits at every bark) and he ran to go sit on my mom's lap. That was all.
He barked one other time as my mom had me go outside and come back in (we were expecting him to begin getting rowdy again), but he just trotted over, sniffed me, and went back to his resting place after a small little "yip."
This works at a range of 50 feet, so even if you don't have a dog -- but your too-close-for-comfort neighbors do, you can still benefit. Take it camping or to the RV park to get a quiet night's sleep when other dogs cause a fuss.
Here is the same dog (along with his "brother") having a late morning snooze in the RV. Since my parents have moved into living on the road, they haven't had to worry about barking dogs. So nice!
A kinder alternative to bark collars, this works even when you're gone (so you don't have to worry that all your whistle training is for nothing since you can't be with your dog 24/7). It's priced right at just $39.99, and the battery only gets used when the dog barks. The rest of the time, the machine isn't running.
You can buy the First Alert Ultrasonic Bark Genie now at Walmart and Walmart.com!

We have recently become the owners of a little yappy dog. She's great with the kids, but likes to get a little loud after bed time. Loud pup+sleeping toddlers= no sleep for mom and dad! If we won, we would use it ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI hope I can talk my neighbors into using this if I win.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try this with our dog if I were to win :-)
ReplyDeleteI would use this for our two dogs.
ReplyDeleteMy dad just bought a new dog and he told me that he barks all the time. I would give this to hiom.

ReplyDeleteI would use this for our dog. She was never a huge barker until we moved next to people with dogs that bark a lot. Now our dog joins in with them.
ReplyDeleteOur dogs bark when the neighbor dogs come into the yard - hopefully this will stop that.
ReplyDeleteWe have two large dogs who bark at EVERYthing, including every time the cat moves that they've always lived with. They constantly wake the baby, and w ehave another baby on the way. They're on the verge of finding new homes because nothing has worked long term, including the vibrating collars.
ReplyDeleteI would use this for my younger dog, who is an excessive barker.

If I won, I would use this for my 3 Labrador Retrievers. They are all inside dogs, and two of them are pretty laid back. My yellow Lab though--she barks at EVERYTHING when we go outside. A leaf can fall from a tree and she will bark. I have to let them out fairly early each morning, and I always worry that they will wake up the neighbors. I would never buy a shock collar---this seems like a much better alternative!
ReplyDeleteI will put this on the patio for now as I have a LOT of neighbors with little dogs barking regularly at 5:30AM. I had a similar device for fence fighting between my dogs and the neighbors and it worked well.
ReplyDeleteMy mother has 5 yes i said 5 ankle biter aka her fur baby Chihuahuas who bark every time the wind blows. My father complains non stop and its hard to have my kids over there with them barking non stop! So most def the loudest of my moms "babies"
ReplyDeleteI'd use this on my own barky rescue dog.
ReplyDeleteI would use it at my own home! :)
ReplyDeleteOur dog barks a lot when we are gone, our neighbors have told us and he goes crazy when someone knocks at the door, or there's a noise next door or dogs barking in another yard so I'd like to see if this would help a bit.
ReplyDeleteI would use it for my corgi who just doesn't seem to understand "no barking"
ReplyDeleteI would use this on my dog, his name's Baxter and he's a little toooooo good of a watch dog. We live next to a high school and a college and he does not take kindly to harmless students walking within 100 feet of our house. I'd love to train him with this not to lose it at them!
ReplyDeleteI would use this on my dog.
ReplyDeleteMy little yappy teacup chihuahua that my daughter left here
ReplyDeleteI would use for my dog. My neighbors would be so happy if I won!
ReplyDeleteI would probably give it to my sister for her dogs. My dog doesn't really have a barking problem, fortunately! :-)
ReplyDeletewell, not often anyway...
DeleteI would use this. My Chihuahua barks at all my guest. I would love to stop that behavior.
ReplyDeleteI would give this to my brother-in-law who has two barking dogs!

ReplyDeleteI would use this for my chiweenie who constantly barks and usually it is at nothing.
ReplyDeleteThis would be great to quiet down the dog.
ReplyDeleteThis would be for Gunner -- he barks all day long at everything. Furnace, printer, TV etc... any little noise and he goes into a barking frenzy.
ReplyDeleteThis would be for Ozzy, our black lab/border collie mix, who loves to bark at joggers, bikers, the mailman, or pretty much anyone else who even walks past our house!
