My preschooler loves to play on the iPad, and when I can, I want it to be something that's educational. Entertainment is great, for sure, but I like it when screen time counts. That's why I was pretty impressed with the Captain McFinn's Swim & Play App. It has an exciting backstory featuring pirates, treasure, and sea adventures.
Ever since my son came back from our zoo's aquarium, this is especially interesting to him! And this new app is the ONLY children's brand featuring live, interactive, and guided play that's safe for kids to learn from!
What skills does the app teach? In addition to rewarding hand-eye coordination with simple motions the kids can do with their finger on the app screen, kids will do dress up, drawing, music, sand castles building, and read and listen to stories, cartoons, and play mini-games. My son was especially drawn to the scavenger hunts.
What kids may not realize while they are playing is that they are also learning empathy, how to interact in a healthy relationships with other kids and adults, as well as how to take responsibility for their actions. It's great for kids of all developmental abilities!
There is also a "team" feel to the game, as kids are shown other children's creations, kids can sing together, and other children interact with the app. To show support of the other kids, players can simply tap the "clap" button!
All of this fun is led by a grown-up "Explorer" who acts as sort of a play date leader, encouraging kids with the live component of the app! You never know when your child's art work or name will be mentioned or featured in a play session by the Explorer!
Previously available by subscription only, Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play now sells for just $2.99 in the Apple Store and through Google Play. Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play app is also featured in the nabi Elev-8, Fuhu’s newest tablet. (We love the Fuhu nabi® tablet. You can see our review of one here.)
