Review of Kale Power Smoothies (Our New Favorite Smoothie)

My family loves smoothies. We make them pretty much all the the time. But in the winter, when I can't just pop out into my garden and grab a handful of kale or chard, they aren't as healthy as I could make them.. (and that makes me sad.)

I was sent a 6-pack of Kale Power Smoothies from Brigitte's Naturally to see if something premade could be as delicious and filling as my own smoothies. My husband also got a 6-pack. We tried it over a week with the intention to do a cleanse. Then life kicked in, and I drove my Grandma to the hospital a whole bunch of times -- eating in the cafeteria, and even stopping off for lattes once or twice. So the cleanse didn't really come to be.

But I was so glad to have the smoothies.  Here's why:

Kale Power Smoothies take about one smoothie to get used to. They are like a kick in the mouth of every great fruit and veggie you've ever eaten. The protein ones are my favorite, even though they both taste very similar, and each are really filling. I think it is something about the few added ingredients in the Protein + that make the flavor a bit more appealing.

These are good. Not "oh my goodness! They are just like ice cream!" good. More like "do I have to eat that? Swallow that? Cook that? I think I'll have a tasty whole foods smoothie instead."

The smoothies arrived partially thawed from frozen, and I put them in my fridge right away. You have to shake these things really well before consuming, because stuff separates and settles. Shake it as much as you think you should. Then shake again for good measure.

I enjoyed these at my desk (on days I skip breakfast). In the car -- on the way to another heart appointment for my Grandma. In my room where I usually sneak chocolate.

After the first day of having 2 smoothies replacing meals, I was in the bathroom all the time. (Not in that way...) I must not drink enough liquids, because all the smoothie made me feel really full, and I had to pee every hour or so. Then things settled down. I was satisfied from the smoothies, I only gnoshed at dinner, and I loved being able to open the fridge and have something that supported me and my healthy eating goals right there waiting for me!

What's in the smoothies? The folks at Brigitte's say:
Kale Power contains a mega-dose of kale and other green dehydrated veggies and just enough fruit in each bottle to be yummy, but not too sweet. We source 100% organic whole food ingredients and lovingly blend our smoothies in Vitamix blenders like you would at home. We are the only handcrafted KaleSmoothie on the market.

For food safety and to preserve the real- food nutrients, we also Cold-Pressure treat (HPP) the bottled product.
Here's the actual ingredient list:

Sam and I took to these things like some kind of drug. I wanted more. My husband -- who says he loves smoothies -- but almost forgot they were in the fridge, would drink one when prompted. He's the one drinking carrot juice and strange concoctions of turmeric in honey milk, so it was no stretch for his tastebuds (which I'm surprised still work after years of chewing raw garlic.) I, on the other hand, crave candy. All the time. I sneak pieces of chocolate, and eat chips in the car. I'm a bad girl, and, yet, the smoothies kept me from thinking of all of that.

The bottom line is this:

Kale Power Smoothies taste good. They are easier than making your own with similar ingredients, and I trust that the kale is of better quality that the stuff sitting at my grocery's shelves in the middle of March (which is all wilty and gross looking.) I feel like, when done drinking, I'll smile and have big chunks of green stuff in my teeth because you are literally drinking a garden of goodies. But it has never happened. Kale Power is surprisingly smooth going down and there have been no "kale in my teeth" selfies taken yet.

If you're spending hundreds a month on whole food powders or pills, you will want to give this a try. If you're on a budget, and really want to kick start a healthy change in your life, you'll want to give this a try. If you live close enough to a Brigitte's store location to pop in for fresh smoothies, you will absolutely want to give them a try. They can also ship to your door via Amazon, and the drinks are really enjoyable. We recycle the bottles to store other things in, so there need be no waste if you don't want there to be.

Get all the details at the official website. If you do order, tell them that you heard from Linsey Knerl how great they are. I'm sure Brigitte (who is a very nice person) would love to know! (We get nothing out of it, except the satisfaction that we are helping a small business do as well as they deserve -- which should be very, very well.) You can also order them easily from Amazon, as well!

*If you can't tell, I received smoothies to try. So did my husband. Opinions are all our own.
