How to Make a Farm Animal Themed Easter Basket

Easter baskets growing up were 80% sugar. (You know what I mean.) We searched the house for those plastic eggs filled with jelly beans, chocolates, and tummy aches. It was so much fun! But, when the candy was gone, so was the Easter egg hunt magic.

This year, I was sponsored by Schleich to bring you a different option for kids who love animals -- and who want the fun to last! My preschooler is in that boat. He adores all things animal. My almost 4-year-old loves them, too, insisting on sleeping each night with a stuffed rooster he calls "Chi-chen." As someone who grew up on a farm, my boys have it in their DNA to love all the cool elements of the rural life: animals, barns, tractors, and hard-work!

We decided that the Schleich farm world plays sets would make perfect Easter basket filler. They are sweet -- but just not in the way that you can ever go overboard with. I set out to make a simple basket my boys would like, complete with the realistic and durable animal toys we have been collecting from Schleich for years!

I started with a very basic blue Easter basket (a square one looked more "utility"). I then filled it with shredded paper (straw would be great, too.) Then, in went the small animals that wouldn't fit in eggs.

Around them, I put the small accessories and animals, encased in plastic Easter eggs!

Then, the big animals went in. This cow is so awesome!

My boys are going to be thrilled come Easter morning. They already have some of the Schleich toys, including the horse stable set. They spend hours with these toys, and they are built to last!

If you want to give you child something sweet this Easter that will bring them years of fun, I recommend putting some Schleich toys into the baskets. Little wanna-be farmers find them to be fascinating. I do, too!

(Schleich toys are made with love in Germany. They have been around since the 30's, and their child-friendly toys are made with the love and input of parents, children, and teachers!)

*We buy these at our local Bomgaar's store, although we received the two sets shown, along with compensation, for this post. You can also find them online at a local farm supply stores in your area. 1. These animals last a crazy long time. They are the one toy that seem to survive getting handed down again and again!

    1. I know, right? My kids get so much candy at grandma's house on Easter. This is nice to come home to and play with for long after the holiday is over.

  4. What a neat idea!! I love the idea of hiding the little "parts" that all go together instead of all candy. We aren't big candy fans here either - I think this may be exactly how we do our egg hunt! Thanks for the inspiration!
