I don't know how managed to get my oldest to 13-years of age before discovering Yu-Gi-Oh!, but now that my 5 boys have found it, they are never going back! This game is one of their favorite ways to pass the time, and they seem to always get out of bed and go straight into a duel with another brother. I find it refreshing that they have used this hobby as a way to strategize, develop critical thinking skills, and bond with one another!
But there's another aspect to Yu-Gi-Oh! culture that can't be missed. It's the animated series. My boys love the cartoons, and have caught up on all the old episodes. When were were asked to review the newly released Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions (available on Digital HD now and on Blu-ray June 27th), they were freaking out with excitement!
The Blu-ray we reviewed has an 89 minute run time in its original Japanese. We obviously watched the dubbed English version, which was just 2 minutes longer. This anime movie was super exciting and had my boys attention throughout the entire film.
In this movie, Yugi Muto gets back together with old friends to defeat evil. There are appearances by some great classic characters including Seto Kaiba, Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, Tea Gardner, and Bakura. The film took 10 years to develop and is made by the original creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! Kazuki Takahashi!
You do not need to have seen the old series to enjoy this. And since it's a completely new story line, there really are no "spoilers." All fans of the franchise will enjoy this. My boys give it two thumbs up!
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this release is the Blu-ray version, which features an exclusive collectible trading card. My boys really got excited about this precious addition to their card collection and thought it was worth the price of the film, alone.
The Digital HD version is available now. You can also pre-order the Blu-ray (with collectible card) before its release on June 27th!
