Reading Eggs Review

If you're short on time but want to give your child access to a fully-comprehensive reading program, you may have been considering Reading Eggs. This web and app-based phonics, reading, and literacy program, created by Blake eLearning Inc., has been a favorite in our family for years. I'll tell you more about this program, and why we trust it for some of our reading learning.

Why we like reading eggs

Reading Eggs is super-engaging, and I never have to ask my son twice if he wants to work on the app. It's a nice change of pace from workbooks, and he'll snuggle up on the couch with my iPad and work for 20-30 minutes without any issues. I can check on him to see what he's working on, but Reading Eggs also sends out frequent updates via email that tell me what lesson he is on the learning path, what new letters or sounds he has mastered, and how to further engage him. The emails provide links to printable worksheets for the learning paths, so I can print them off at home and have him do even more enrichment work with the letter or sounds he needs more work on.

(The photos below are of Manny doing "school." It's a challenge for him to keep the iPad at a healthy distance from his face. We are working on this!)

Reading Eggs is one of -- if not the -- most intuitive and user-friendly reading app on the market. I've enjoyed watching it evolve over the years to include more and more parent-focused perks, such as:

  • Dashboard for up to four kids
  • Placement tests you can take or retake at any time (retaking may adjust your child's progress, so don't do this if they are far along and want to save all their work!)
  • At-a-glance summary of your child's reading age, sounds and words learned, and Lexile growth
  • A very detailed history of lessons, quizzes, "driving tests," books read, and more

How do we use Reading Eggs?

We are more casual users of the program. We consistently use it (almost every day,) but I don't always use the worksheets or extras. Right now, my son is hooked on the Fast Phonics feature, which is a separate learning path that helps older kids get the phonics mastered at a brisker pace than the traditional program. My son loves the Yeti featured in Fast Phonics, as well as the games and the rewards. Reading Eggs has incorporated a lot of gamification into their app -- they really know kids!

Sometimes, I do want my son to get a more "formal" sit-down-school approach and will print off the worksheets. If you're interested in knowing how you can make Reading Eggs your Reading and Phonics program for your homeschool, this link gives details on all of the available tools and how you can use it as a stand-alone reading/phonics curriculum.

As students grow in their reading comprehension skills, the Reading Eggs program expands. There are four reading/phonics programs within the dashboard, all designed for various ages and stages. When your child takes their first placement test, the program will tell you which program to use, so don't go solely by age alone. Once your child has finished Reading Eggs, it may be good to move on to Reading Express, for example.

The suggested ages are:
  • Reading Eggs Junior (2-4)
  • Reading Eggs (3-7)
  • Fast Phonics (5-10)
  • Reading Eggspress (7-13)
But, again, I recommend the placement test for best results.

Reading Eggs review summary

As a customer who has been buying the Reading Eggs app subscription for years and years, this program is a foundation of our homeschool. Our kids have used it at various times in their learning journey, although we still strongly recommend physical books and read-alouds with parents to further encourage independent, non-app reading experiences. Reading Eggs has all of the bells and whistles kids love while being incredibly user-friendly for the parent to track and engage their child offline.

With the addition of their Fast Phonics program, older kids who struggle with basic phonics skills can "catch up" with activities that speak more to their age level. (No "baby" learning activities here.) If you're on the fence about adding more screen time, I wouldn't hesitate to swap out some of the less productive things your kids do online with this app. It's so much fun, they'll probably ask for it daily, like my kids do.

Reading Eggs is a secular (faith-neutral) program that should be useful to all families.

Start your 30-day, risk-free trial, and see if it works for you!

As you might have seen from the photos above, the app also has a program called Mathseeds. This is a math program that we have toyed around with in the past, but don't use regularly in our homeschool. It's of equally high quality and engages kids in many of the same ways. If you're a parent looking to have your child use app-based learning for math, as well, it's a worthy consideration.
