Thank You to Our Veterans!!

I have no idea what it's like to be a military wife.  I don't know what it's like to have a kid serving overseas.  I can however, imagine that our armed forces could use much more support than they have been getting.

One way that I know of that can help the military community is to make sure that they have decent employment when they return from their service duties.  You would think that someone who honorably served our country would be the best candidate for employment, but so many of our veterans still can't find a job!

I am so proud -- as a Walmart Mom -- to tell you that Walmart has hired 20,000 members of our armed forces as part of their Welcome Home Commitment  program.  When I visited Bentonville (Walmart's home office) earlier this year, they had just rolled the initiative out, and they were very passionate about the cause.  (In fact, a former military member was behind much of the outreach, and you could tell it was very near and dear to his heart!)  Walmart is committed to offering a job to any honorably discharged veteran within his or her first twelve months off active duty, and they have projected hiring and training more than 100,000 veterans over the next five years!

I think it's also great that Walmart has embraced their holiday giving commitment with a $2 million donation to Operation Homefront and Fisher House to provide toys, meals and lodging to military families in greatest need of support this year. The donation will also help hundreds of active duty service members come home for the holidays!  Can you think of anything more exciting than seeing your military parent, spouse, or child come home to celebrate Christmas with you?

While I don't have military members in my family, they have influenced my life so much!  If you share a home, family, or work-place with someone who serves, you can now show your appreciation via Walmart's "Wall of Honor."  You can submit information and a photo to commemorate their service -- a virtual "salute" to say thanks!  So far, there have been over 7,000 honored!

As a participant in the Walmart Moms Program, I've received compensation for my time and efforts in creating this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
