Review of Just Dance Kids for the Wii

We are really having fun with our Wii lately!  Not only is it helping us stay active when the weather is uncooperative, but I'm actually losing some weight and getting in better shape than before.  No, I'm not spending a fortune on the exercise-specific games (although those are great, too.)  I'm actually using my kids games to stay in shape, and one of my favorites to use is... Just Dance Kids!

The game is a bit misleading.  It features kids singing songs that are popular right now (like one sung by Selena Gomez), as well as popular preschool songs like "The Ants Go Marching."  While this may seem cheesey, the kids on the screen really get down with the songs, and the actions are fun to do!  As someone who took over 12 years of professional dance lessons (and even taught), I found the moves to be exciting, fresh, and well-choreographed for something designed for kids to enjoy.  I have been using this game nightly to get in a brief 15 minute workout before bed.

Oh yeah... and my kids like it, too....

My younger kids enjoy it best.  (The 12-year-old isn't as interested, but will play to beat the high score.)  I find that my 7-year-old son is the biggest fan of Just Dance Kids.  He enjoys the mode where you can play with a friend and work together to get the high score!

I appreciate all the work that went into developing this game, from the life-like on-screen dance "leaders", to the songs (gotta have my "Yo Gabba Gabba"), and the wide range of ages that can enjoy it.  It's the first game that has ever made me feel cool doing the Chicken Dance.

Just Dance Kids can be purchased from Amazon or other game retailers just in time for the holidays!

Review of Clic-It Diaper Bag

As I type this, I'm not really sure where my camera is.  Or my wallet.  And I really wish I knew where I put the book that I was reading.

This is the story of my (disorganized) life, and when I got a chance to try out a Clic-It Diaper Bag, I was pretty excited!  The premise behind this savvy bag is that all the functions are served by individual add-on accessories that can be attached to the bag when you need them, and removed when you don't.  Case in point:  I often take my wallet with me in my diaper bag, but then I forget to take it out to put into my purse.  The Clic-It bag actually came with a little pouch for my I.D., credit cards, and cash so that I could move it back and forth between my purse and my diaper bag with ease.  It also came with a bottle cooler bag and a diaper changing pad with a pocket for a couple of diapers and wipes.  If I wanted to travel light, I could remove the extras OR just take the changing portion with me.

The bag is super easy to customize.  I love that each component snaps easily onto the inside of the bag but won't fall out if I drop my bag.  It also comes with an adjustable shoulder strap and a top flap that zips off if you don't want that Messenger bag look.

Each portion of the bag is available for a separate purchase, so if you want ALL the functions, it could add up.  For those that are hopelessly looking for their baby and personal items between 5 different bags, however, the time saved searching could make the purchase price worthwhile. (Note: please read what each bag comes with before you buy.  I received some additional accessories with my bag that may not come standard.)

Read more about the Clic-It Bag at their website or "Like" them on Facebook!

Wanna Win?  Clic-It is having a “Gearing Up for Baby” contest from November 15 – December 24. Log on to www.clicitbag.com for details on how to enter for a chance to win a prize pack including a new Clic-It diaper bag and accessory assortment (retail value: $117.00)

*Sample was received by Team Mom. Opinions are my own.

Review of ZipBin Storage Containers by Neat-Oh

I jsut spend an excrutiating 2 days organizing my house.  The majority of odd and end items that I found scattered about belonged to my 3 boys.  They own so many cars, trains, and accessories, that they wouldn't even fit in the largest of my cardboard boxes!  (Plus, boxes are ugly, and don't transport well!)

We decided to give ZipBin containers a try.  Designed for kids and all their toy clutter needs, they are soft-sided, zip up easily, and carry just enough toys to get a kid through a visit at Grandma's.  (They are also great if your kids want to play in the living room, but you DON'T want them dragging ALL 200 pieces of their train set out.)

We reviewed the Train Depot case and the Hot Wheels ZipBin Wheelie Play Pack case.  My 3-year-old is a train fanatic, and LOVED the train case, which zips out to become a play mat and even comes with a train!  Since he already has a backpack for his special trains, this has easily replaced it and looks good on the shelf in his room.  The Hot Wheels case also zips out, this time into a race track shape.  It also has a sewn-in car holds for up to 6 cars (although you can put as many cars as you can fit into this case, easily.)

These containers won't solve all of my toy clutter issues, but they will help my boys stay focused on taking care of their most prized possessions.  Safe, cute, and easy to use, they are a great idea for the stow-and-go family!

Learn more about ZipBin at their Facebook page!

Wanna Win?  We are giving away one ZipBin container to a lucky winner.  To be entered, just tell us which container you like best from this page!  (We can't guarantee the exact container as a prize, but will try to accommodate your choices.)  You have until December 8th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON, please.

Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

Review of David Archuleta: The Other Side of Down CD (Giveaway)

We recently had the chance to listen to an advanced copy of David Archuleta's new CD "The Other Side of Down".  I'm not the expert on what the kids like, so I allowed my daughter to review it and write about it.  She provides the following review of this CD:

"The new album, "The Other Side of Down" is very well-written.  I love it!  I have both of his albums, and I think this one is just a slight bit better than the first (which is good, because with most artists that I listen to, many of the songs on their later albums are "same old.. same old".)  I really do not have any complaints about this album, and it is VERY well written.  I love all the songs, but my favorites are:

"The Other Side of Down"
"Something 'Bout Love"
"Stomping the Roses"
"Who I Am"
"Parachutes and Airplanes"
"Look Around"
"Complain"
"The Day After Tomorrow"

My daughter has listened to this album pretty much since we received it.  It is on her top playlist on her iPod, and she shared it with her friends on a recent trip.  It's always playing!

Follow David on Facebook or check out the online store for the album!

Wanna Win?  We are giving away 3 copies of the new CD to lucky readers!  To be entered to win, just tell us why you like David!  You have until November 30th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in, and you CAN ENTER EVERY DAY! (Just comment as directed for the first entry, and then enter with "today's entry" for each entry after that.)

Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

*I was provided with a sample CD to facilitate this review and giveaway.

Walmart Food Drive Through Nov. 22nd!

I love the idea of donating food to charity, but to be honest, it's a hassle to go to the store, bring it home, and then box it up for the charity before making a drive there, too.  Walmart has made it SUPER easy for families to share a bit of their blessings this year by offering an in-store donation option for non-perishable food items.

Just to show you how easy it really is, I loaded up my cranky 5-month-old and hit our local Walmart to purchase peanut butter, jelly, pasta and sauce for needy families.  I am still suffering from a nasty cold, so I'm not at my peak, but the entire process was painless, and the food will go to a great cause.  All in all, we purchased 10 large peanut butters, 10 squeezable jellies, 5 large pasta sauces, and 5 two-lb boxes of pasta -- for $50.10!

The event is going on until the 22nd of November, and only non-perishables will be accepted.  (If you donate expensive items or a large amount of food, it might help to see the manager.  They can help you with your haul.)  The most needed items are:

  • Canned tuna
  • Canned chicken
  • Canned beans (baked, garbanzo, kidney, etc.)
  • Canned nuts
  • Canned/boxed soup/stew
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruits in lite syrup
  • 100% juice boxes & cans
  • Canned milk
  • Evaporated milk
  • Canned sauce & noodles
  • Peanut butter & jam
  • Mayo

You can learn more about Walmart's commitment to help communities fight hunger at their website.

*Compensation has been provided by Walmart for my time and effort to participate. Opinions are 100% my own.

Fiber One Cereal and Bars Help you Wake Up! (Giveaway)

I'm a bar lover.  I'll eat a breakfast bar over a giant hot breakfast any day.  I don't know if it's because I love the convenience, I can eat at my desk, or because I know exactly the amount of calories and nutrients I take in with a serving-sized bar.

The Fiber One bars are especially tasty.  I really enjoyed trying the Fiber One Oats & Chocolate chewy bars.  They taste pretty good, and have 9 grams of fiber in each bar!  These will be a good addition to my diaper bag when traveling by plane later this week, as I know they'll keep me feeling full while I cruise at high altitudes with only airline peanuts being offered.

In addition to the bars, Fiber One has quite a few cereal offerings (if that's your thing.) You can find all the products at the Safeway family of stores (Dominick’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Vons, and Genuardi’s)!

Wanna Win?  We have a neat Fiber One prize pack to help you get started with a great-tasting week of breakfasts!  The prize includes 2 VIP coupons redeemable for a Fiber One product and a $25 Safeway gift card!  To be entered to win, just comment on this post with how you might incorporate the Fiber One cereal or bars into your morning routine!  You have until November 27th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in, and you CAN ENTER EVERY DAY! (Just comment as directed for the first entry, and then enter with "today's entry" for each entry after that.)

Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

We love Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales for the Wii!

We are a Wii family.  We play the games when we are bored, sick, or need to pass the time while waiting for the weather to clear up.  Some of the games we own cause turmoil in the family (i.e., only one kid can play at a time and he "hogs" it for too long).  The new Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales game for the Wii was refreshing, in that it had over 30 mini games that everyone could play, and more than one kid could play at a time!

There was the basic racing portion of the game.  A split screen let both players see where they were in the action, and because it is rated E for Everyone, there was no violence or language that I had to shield my youngest from.  Because the racing was a little difficult for my 5-year-old to master (he kept running into walls and wasn't able to back up very well), we switched to some of the mini games for awhile.  We played a fun version of Memory that even my husband and I enjoyed.  (We played each other, and he won!)

This game has hours of play due the variation in the games.  You can get competitive, or just play for fun.  Earning trophies and points is a goal for my 7-year-old, but not for my 4-year-old, so we love that this game accomodates each of them without making anyone feel like a loser.

To read more about this fun game, see the official website!

Freezer Pleasers for Your Little Baby!

Those of you who know anything about homemade baby food already know that freezing individual portions is one of the best ways to prepare healthy meals for your little one.  The problem lies in the impracticality of regular ice cube trays. Annabel Karmel has come up with a neat mealtime solution for freezing foods with their freezer tray.  It is BPA free and flexible, which makes it easy to pop out one of nine individual 1-oz. servings at a time!  It also has a fitted tray that keeps food fresh.

For a fun and unique take on "frozen food", your little one might also like the Fill & Freeze Puree Pops!  They are like traditional homemade popsicle kits, but much smaller (and more adorable!)  You can fill them with pureed apples, pears, or any other treat for an easy way for older babies to eat their meals!  I can see this as being a great way to get through teething, too.

We have had fun trying out the entire line of Annabel Karmel goodies.  You can see the entire Annabel Karmel line from Infantino at their website! (Or check them out on Facebook and Twitter!)

Annabel Karmel Makes Food for Baby Fun!

My baby JUST started eating solids (he's 5 months now), and we have had some fun in the past few days making our own little baby meals with the new line of Annabel Karmel baby food accessories!  Not only are these products cute, they are really useful for helping Mom or Dad prepare the freshest meals for their little one.

Today I'm going to share my experience with the Mash & Serve Bowl.  My son is a bit young to actually eat foods prepared this way (he's still on single grain cereal), but it was fun to try it out and see how we could use it in the very near future.  Here is the bowl with two soft-baked french fries:

Here we are mashing the fries in the bowl (both the masher and bowl are BPA free).

Here is our final mash!

As you can see, this is an easy way to get foods mashed, even when you're on the go.  The bowl is small, light, and dishwasher safe, so you can stash it in your diaper bag for trips to a restaurant or a relative's house!

You can see the entire Annabel Karmel line from Infantino at their website! (Or check them out on Facebook and Twitter!)

Our Tween Daughter Tries SofLens Daily Disposables!

My daughter hasn't been wearing her glasses much lately.  As a first-year volleyball player, she finds them difficult to remember to bring with her and wear (she really only needs them for seeing close-up), and they aggravate her complexion.  We had almost given up on having her wear them at all, when we were offered the opportunity to try Bausch + Lomb SofLens Daily Disposables.  She just turned 12, and we thought that if her doctor gave her the OK, we would try them out and see how she did.

Our experience has been great!  We went to our eye doctor and she was fitted for the lenses.  He had her practice taking them out and putting them back in before he turned her loose with her own supply of the lenses.  She had a bit of a time getting them in at first, because they are thinner than the "practice" lenses that she tried at the doctor's.  Because she doesn't have to clean them, however (she just tosses them at the end of each day), it has helped me to feel confident that she won't get an eye infection from being a typical, sometimes forgetful tween.

She has worn these contacts throughout her first volleyball season.  She loves that she has benefited from seeing closeup, but that she can just toss her lenses if one gets bumped during the game, or she sweats too much.  We really don't think we could afford to replace all the lenses that she has lost due to contact sports, so this is a perfect solution for us!

And while looking good isn't everything (especially at 12), she feels more confident in these lenses.  Her eye glasses were cute, in my opinion, but not having to wear them makes her feel better about herself.  Anything that boosts her esteem in a healthy way is a winning option, in my book!

The dailies cost a little more than longer wear contacts, but the benefits are worth it.  We spend less on contact cases, solution, and replacing lenses that she would lose or tear from mishandling.  For a 12-year-old, I can't think of a better way to incorporate soft lenses into an eye care plan!

You can keep up with the folks at Bausch + Lomb at their Facebook page!  We'll be back next month to report how my daughter has been doing with her lenses.

“I wrote this review while participating in a test drive campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Bausch + Lomb and received the product necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

We try Marketside from Walmart for Fresh, Fast Meals

Whoa!  Last week was little more than a blurry memory, but I do remember how nice it was to sample some of the Marketside offerings available at Walmart stores nationwide.  We have had the pizzas in the past, and had an awesome experience, so I was completely on board for this taste test.

Monday, we were able to sample 4 varieties of pizza (the small ones) which are available at your store for $5.  They had amazing flavor, the freshest toppings, and I was impressed by how large the pieces of meat and veggies were.  The cheese pizza was my fave, even though I usually don't eat cheese pizza.  It was a very mild tasting cheese with lots of stringy goodness.  It also had a light sauce and lots of herbs.  Very delicious!

In addition to the pizzas were several bags of salad.  I couldn't believe how large the Family Size bags were.  They could feed our entire family of 2 adults and 3 kids (the baby doesn't eat yet), easily.  There was enough left over for half of a second meal, although the yummy buttery croutons didn't make it to the second serving (my 3 year old kept stealing the packages of croutons and eating them under the table.)

The toppings that came with the salad were substantial.  In addition to croutons or crumblies, there were salad varieties with real bacon bits, various cheeses, and one kind with cherry tomatoes (the tomatoes were not that flavorful, in my opinion.) Each salad kit also came with a custom dressing, which was good, but we skipped in lieu of our own dressings.  The lettuce stayed really fresh for days, even if you opened the bag!

Day two offered us soup and salad!  This was my favorite sampling day because I am a huge fan of Panera, but hate the price tag associated with taking the entire family there.  The breads that we tried were as good, and much less costly ($1.50 for a mini-loaf, and $3 for a large loaf.)  We ate on the breads all week long.  They tasted great after being warmed in the oven and were perfect dipped in the soups.

See some of the tasty soup and bread goodness below:

The soups I loved best were the cream based ones:  Broccoli cheese with large chunks of broccoli, Loaded Baked potato with chunky potatoes (skins still on) and bacon bits, and a delicious Tomato Bisque.  My husband despises cream soups and preferred the tangy zip of the Chicken Tortilla (which had a thinner consistency but large shreds of chicken breast throughout.)  We both liked the Corn Chowder!

The rest of the week brought more Marketside sampling opportunities, including pasta night!  We almost never buy fresh refrigerated pasta, because it is so expensive, but this is an indulgence I think we'll start implementing into our meal plan.  The pastas were so innovative:  some with cremini mushrooms, others with sausage, and yet others with chicken and spinach!  Tortellini, ravioli and the freshest marinara (loaded with chunks of tomatoes) filled our plates!  We also enjoyed steamed butternut squash cubes that we cooked right in the packaging via the microwave.  This was SUPER easy and delicious.

Friday, we headed out on our first vacation roadtrip, where I was a speaker at the I_Blog conference in Perry, Iowa.  Luckily, we were sent some Marketside dips to try, which went right into our cooler for some great on-the-road snacking.  We sampled guacamole, fruit dips (made with rich cream cheese and vanilla bean), ranch veggie dips, and some zesty hummus.  This was paired with our own apples and some of the veggies leftover from the day before.  Our kids were quiet the entire trip as they dipped their fresh produce into the single-serving containers of dips avaialble from Marketside.  (We don't pack school lunches, because we homeschool -- so this was a fun way for the kids to experience their "own" packages of food.)

We spend a good amount of our budget on food each month, but loathe the bill associated with taking everyone out to a restaurant.  The Marketside line is strikingly as good as restaurant (if not better, in some cases) and easily trumps most eateries in terms of affordability.  While most families can't afford deli-fresh for every meal, it's an awesome way to give working Moms and Dads a break from cooking and can make the whole family feel like they are enjoying a night out -- at home!  Dollar for dollar, we found it more affordable than the cheapest fast-food restaurant.. and it's much more healthy and delicious!

Find out which of your Walmart stores carry the Marketside products by using the store locator.

*Compensation and product has been provided by Walmart for my time and efforts to review the Marketside products. Opinions are 100% my own.

Wisk Wins in a Recent Food Fight!

We have been enjoying our test drive with the new Wisk with Stain Spectrum Technology.  (So much, in fact, that we ran out of our original bottle, and couldn't do this test until I tracked down more Wisk from a store in the next town!)

We were assigned to have a food fight -- or at least put some ketchup on one of the little guy's new white t-shirts and use Wisk to get it out.  Unfortunately, we had an argument over who got to be the squirter, and who got to be the squirted.  We finally decided to let Mom do the work herself.  Here's our video where we tackle the nasty stain with our trusty bottle of Wisk!

As you can see, it got all the ketchup out! (And I was a bit nervous that it wouldn't.)  We have been using Wisk as our primary stain fighting product at our home since we started this project.  We just put it into a spray bottle, dilute it with 1/2 water, and spray it on tough stains.  It works great!

You can read more about the different kinds of stains that Wisk is effective against at their Facebook page.  website.  (The HE formula is perfect for those front-loading washers, too.)

Review of Ramona and Beezuz on DVD

I laughed.  I cried.  And then (thank goodness), I laughed a bit at the end to lighten things up.  This is the very brief account of my experience watching the new Ramona and Beezuz on DVD (out tomorrow), and it is a film that is perfect for ALL families.

If you aren't familiar with the books, I'll forgive you, but if you are, you will already know how precocious and wonderful the main character in the Ramona books by Beverly Clearly is.  She is sassy, smart, and yet so innocent.  She captures the wonder of a child so perfectly, and yet, she is a mess.  Trouble seems to always follow her best intentions.

And so goes this movie of a young girl getting into all kinds of laughable situations, even as her favorite Aunt falls in love, her father loses her job, and her life at school doesn't get any easier.  It's a lighter look at what so many American families are going through right now:  uncertainty, change, and closeness that only comes through trials.

I loved that this movie shows the struggle of a modern family, even thought the issues are timeless.  I love that parents argue.. then make up.  I love that the father loses his job.. only to find something better around the corner.  And I especially love that the themes in this movie are celebrated in a way that only families can truly understand.  Love can endure, and childhood is to be treasured.

You'll love this film featuring a great cast:  John Corbett, Ginnifer Goodwin, Selena Gomez, and Josh Duhamel to name a few.  It is appropriate for all ages (featuring no language or other thematic elements), as it is rated G!  It also is entertaining enough for the young kids to watch (lot of imagination) while holding the attention of adults, too!

You can buy this Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment DVD at Amazon for under $15!  (Follow them on Twitter @FoxHomeEnt or check them out on Facebook!)

Progresso Helps with My Post-Baby Plans (Giveaway!)

I love soup (especially with warm bread, but that's another story.)  I have to be careful, however, because I would eat more than my fair share of salt with most of the soups on the market.  Progresso Reduced Sodium Soup was sent to me to try recently by My Blog Spark, and I was surprised that it tasted rather salty (like I like).  In addition, five of these lower-sodium flavors you may have already tried (Italian Style Wedding, Minestrone, Garden Vegetable, Beef and Vegetable, and Chicken Gumbo) also have 1g of soluble fiber via the yummy veggies and beans!  This is good news, if you are trying to lower your cholesterol with lower sodium and higher fibered foods.

My fave flavor is the Chicken Gumbo.  It has a nice zesty flavor.  My husband also tried it and had no idea it was "reduced" in sodium!  Since I'm trying to eat better and exercise more, this soup could fit into a nice lunch to help me in my post-baby plans!

Learn more about new flavors and savings offers via their website at or on Facebook!

Wanna Win?  We have a neat gift pack of 2 of the reduced sodium soups, a soup mug, and an exercise ball for one lucky reader!  Just comment on any healthy goals you have for this coming holiday season.  You have until November 14th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in, and you CAN ENTER EVERY DAY! (Just comment as directed for the first entry, and then enter with "today's entry" for each entry after that.) Giveaway is open to U.S. and Cananda ages 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

My kids already adore the Dinosaur Train TV show... it IS about dinos, after all.  When it comes to games that the youngest kids can play, however, we often run into difficulty.  We reviewed the Dinosaur Train All Aboard! Game this week, and it was the perfect game for the older kids to teach to the younger ones.

My 12-year-old led the play, and my 3-year-old really got into it!  He picked out his playing piece, spun the wheel to see how many places to move, and even got into the fun of counting!  The game is designed for ages 4 and up, but it's most relevant for kids 3.5 - 7 or so.  It won't keep the oldest kids entertained for very long, but it is a good way for them to teach and interact with younger siblings.

This will be a nice game to have on hand for family game night.  It doesn't have tons of pieces, and plays a lot like Candy Land (without all the cards).  Counting, teamwork, and taking turns are the main lessons to be learned with the All Aboard! game.

This affordably-priced game ($14) is available at Amazon, and you can read more about Dinosaur Train at the official website.
