Review of Recess Monkey's "Flying" Album

Music in the car is a MUST, and while I love kids stuff to keep the children entertained, if Mama don't like it -- we don't play it!

Recess Monkey is a fun band from Seattle that sounds more like something you'd have on your iPod.  The only difference between your typical alt rock band and these guys is that, while you may be listening to lyrics about adult drama and lopsided love affairs, this band of 3 teachers is teaching lessons in bravery, honesty, and having a childhood you can look back fondly upon.

There are some songs that really stick out in my mind more than others:  "Toolbox" is an innocent ode to Daddy's tools, complete with cordless drills keeping the time.  "Bravest Kid in the World" is a call to doing the right thing -- no matter what -- and it doesn't just preach, but rather gives kids credit for being capable people with all the powers necessary to act brave in the face of peer pressure.  My favorite, perhaps the less whimsical of all, is the harder rocking "Sidekick", with an infectious chorus you can repeat over and over without losing your adult cool.

As you know by now, we rarely review kid's CD's.  When we do, it means something.  This album is appropriate for tots and teens alike, but we think it will have Mom and Dad rockin' along, as well.

The album releases June 21st!  Get more info on the crew at Recess Monkey via their official site www.recessmonkeytown.com

Wanna Win? We're giving one lucky reader their own copy of "Flying" by Recess Monkeys.
To be entered to win, just comment on why you want to win! We'll give you until June 11th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. You can enter one time total per day (for each entry after the first entry, simply comment with "Today's entry!".) Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter our other blog giveaways while you're here!)

Final Child Hunger Ends Here Plea

It has been an amazing experience being a blogger correspondent for the Child Hunger Ends Here program.  These few short months have granted me the chance to learn more about child hunger in America and what my local community is doing to help stop it.  Perhaps my favorite part was getting the chance to tour my local food pantry and teach my kids something in the process.

If you don't have anything to give, I understand. Times are tough for most everyone I know.  If you could consider one way to give that doesn't ask any additional money of you, however, it would be appreciated.  Simply make sure that the ConAgra items you are buying anyway are specially-marked with a code to enter online at childhungerendshere.com.  By entering that code, you are helping to feed additional kids!  And it costs you nothing extra to do so, except a few minutes of your time.

Thanks so much for your support.  If you missed out on the other ways to contribute, or want to know more about the program (which continues on, even after my correspondent participation ends), you can see my previous Child Hunger Ends Here posts.

Wanna help now? See the stories of those who benefit from your generosity in the fight against child hunger at facebook.com/ConAgraFoods. Every time you share a story on your Facebook page through August 31, 2011, ConAgra Foods will help Feeding America secure an additional meal, up to 100,000.

Introducing Keurig and K-Cup!

This coffee lover gets really excited when I try new flavors and varieties of my favorite drink.  Since I drink coffee all day long (and sometimes at night), I have lots on hand!  I have tried all kinds of brewers, from single-cup to whole pot, but I had never tried a K-cup brewer from Keurig -- until now!

As a K-Cup Ambassador, I have the unique opportunity to test out the B60 Keurig Special Edition Brewing System and new varieties of coffee each month.  Here is the brewer, along with a rotating holder that I love to keep my K-cups in.  As you can see, we've burned through a ton of coffee this month.  (We are actually down to one coffee K-cup, and the rest  are tea!

This month, my sampler pack was filled with so many wonderful flavors.  Here are a few that I'd like to mention:

Gloria Jeans Hazelnut - My fave of the bunch, it has a nutty, bold, and slightly sweet tone that makes it great for filling in for a fatty dessert.  It goes perfectly with breakfast and tastes very much like the fresh stuff you get at a Gloria Jeans shop.

Tully's Coffee Extra Bold French Roast - This stuff rocks!  Bold is the perfect way to describe this rich, dark blend.  It's just what you need to kick things in gear in the afternoon when you can't get a nap.

Celestial Seasonings English Breakfast Black Tea - If you're a tea lover, you'll be pleased to know that the K-cups of your favorite Celestial Seasonings teas taste so delicious.  Skip the steeping time and the messy bag.  This is the clean way to brew tea!

Green Mountain Coffee Breakfast Blend - This is a mild and smooth variety of coffee that needs no cream, sugar, or extras.  It's a great coffee for guests and entertaining!

Wanna Save?  We have an exciting savings offer for our readers, but it's available only through June 10th!  Just use code AM0013-3589 to save 15% on Brew Over Ice K-Cup purchases!

As a K-Cup Ambassdor for Keurig, I received, and will receive over the next year, products to review. Opinions are 100% mine.

Pet Armor Plus for the Big Guy

UPDATE: Several commenters have alerted me to rumors of a recall of these products.  Please see the official response from Pet Armor on this topic here: http://www.petarmor.com/legal/media.php.

To date, we have not had any problems using these products on all of our pets.

Using Pet Armor Plus on our little dog, Gilbert, was simple.  In theory, it should be easy to use for any dog.  Our monster pup, Glenn, who is a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd/Bloodhound mix is difficult to deal with at times.  He tips the scales at 100+ pounds, and he's still growing!

Here is our big baby trying to get in the house.

Generally, he doesn't make it through the door, but we've had our share of times when he sneaks by!

Because he tends to push the younger kids around and get inside every week or so, we have been working very hard at training him that this is OUR HOUSE.  We do feel a bit better when he gets in, however, now that we've started using the Pet Armor Plus product on him.  While we want to have flea and tick prevention for his own health, I have to admit that I also want to keep my house free from the critters, too.

Whether you have an outside dog, inside cat, or pets that come in and out (like ours), you will definitely want to make sure that they aren't getting burdened by bugs.  (My husband already found our first tick inside the house this year, and we're getting ready to give the boys their "summer cuts" -- i.e., shave their heads -- to keep the tick issue under control.)  Living in the country can be tough, if you're not ready to battle those ticks!

Kung Fu Panda 2 Toys in Select Boxes of General Mills Cereal! (Giveaway)

We loved the first Kung Fu Panda movie, so when we found out that the 2nd was coming to DVD soon, we got really excited.  I'm a huge Jack Black fan, and the kids really enjoy the action of the fighting (which is surprisingly kid-appropriate in this movie.)  Now that there are Kung Fu Panda toys in select boxes of Cocoa Puffs, Trix, Golden Grahams, Reese's Puffs, Cheerios, Apple Cinnimon Cheerios, Cookie Crisp, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Honey Nut Cheerios, there is a good chance that we'll get a little toy in the boxes of cereal we buy anyway!

While we don't buy cereal for the prizes -- ever -- we do like to find them in our regular cereals and save them for incentives for the kids.  (Potty training is so much easier with a few cereal box toys on hand.)  The spin fighter toys from Kung Fu Panda 2 are perfect for this!

Wanna Win?  We have a neat prize pack for one lucky reader that includes a box of the participating cereal, a spin toy, and the original Kung Fu Panda movie!  To be entered to win, just comment on why you like the Kung Fu Panda movies!  We'll give you until June 6th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. You can enter one time total per day (for each entry after the first entry, simply comment with "Today's entry!".) Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter our other blog giveaways while you're here!)

*General Mills and DreamWorks provided you with the prize pack, information, and additional prize pack through MyBlogSpark.

Review of koobli

First of all, you may be asking, "What's a koobli?"  It's a brilliant little product designed to keep mess manageable, and we tried it at our house over the last month -- and loved it!

This cover is like a smock, but much easier to put on.  It's parent-sized, which means you can use it when you're helping kids with their artwork, if you need to burp a baby that spits up a lot, or for any other activity where being a mom, teacher, or caregiver could leave you stained or messy.

Our favorite use for the koobli is our monthly haircut day.  I put it on right before I get the clippers for my boys' hair, and I can give them all their summer cuts without getting any hair on my own clothes.  I just peel off the koobli when I'm done, shake it out, and toss it into the wash!

My koobli is a pretty purpley-pink color, but the product itself is unisex.  Get one in a neutral color, and you can share it with your hubby, too!

Find out more about the no-mess solution at koobli's official website.

Need a Chore Chart?

Having the right tools can help you achieve those goals you work hard for in life, and chore charts are something we use regularly in our home to help the kids (and myself) get stuff done.  I don't believe in paying for chore charts, as I usually make them myself with a computer and my printer.  I hadn't found a good way to personalize a professional chore chart so that it works for each individual child -- until now.

Creating a chore chart at GoalForIt.com was not only simple, it was inspiring.  It got me thinking about how I assign chores and follow through to make sure that my kids get them done in a timely manner.  The site walks you through every step of creating a chart, and gives you some extra help in implementing it (including email reminders to make sure you stay on track!)

The chore charts are just one feature of the free site, and you can begin right away by setting up a profile in less than a minute.  I love free tools that help me manage my busy family, so I see myself going back to this site again and again in the future.

Do you use chore charts and motivational tools with your kids?  What do you use them for (hygiene, picking up the house, schoolwork?)  We'd love to hear about it!

*We are working with GoalforIt and MomSelect to provide you this information.  Opinions are 100% our own.

Taking the Dyson Challenge

It's the final part of our three-part look at how the Dyson Digital Slim really works in a busy household.  So far, I'm loving it.  Not only does it work really well for a handheld cordless, but my 7-year-old has taken a shine to it, asking me at every opportunity if he can clean with it.  It's easy for him to use, and I have no issue with them working on areas that I have pre-approved.

In addition, we have had a great time thinking up "challenges" for our Digital Slim.  The Dyson has, not surprisingly, passed all of our tests, and I am amazed and disgusted at what it picks up.  For example:

We use it to clean out the silverware drawer...

We use it to clean the knife block of dust and food debris....

We use it to clean the onion peeling bits from around the onion basket....

We use it to pick up stray dog food pieces...

And I absolutely love that it picks up unknown dried yuckies from between the freezer and fridge doors....

If you had one, what would you do with it?

Catch up with all the news on this unique product via Dyson's Twitter: @AskDysonUS and Facebook news... and, of course, you can find it at your local Walmart!

Review of Gustafer Yellowgold's Infinity Sock on DVD and CD

We get quite a few kids DVD's and music here at Lille Punkin', but most don't make the cut to review.  Why?  Because I'm a music fan, and if I can't stand to listen to something, I don't really want my kids to either.  Imagine my surprise when we popped in the new DVD from Gustafer Yellowgold's Infinity Sock.  The music is super-catchy, sounding like something I'd have on my iPod, but with lyrics about snake proms, cheese pants, and a cat named Cheddar.

There really isn't much to say about HOW much we love this DVD/CD.  We play it daily for the kids (the baby uses it to self-soothe), and we have the music in our car, as well.  I can admit that "Cheddar" is currently one of my favorite all-time songs.  I play it even when the kids aren't in the car.

Check out my baby rockin' out to it.....  (he even pauses between songs!)

With quirky animation, fresh lyrics, and a musical quality that reminds me of a mix between Ben Folds and the Beatles, we can't say enough about Gustafer Yellowgold.  Find out more about his world at http://www.gustaferyellowgold.com/ or snag a copy at Amazon!

Wanna Win? We have a limited edition, signed, numbered, screen printed Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock poster  to give away to one lucky reader!   To be entered to win, just tell us which valuable in your home you would add to your inventory first.  We'll give you until May 20th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. You can enter one time total per day (for each entry after the first entry, simply comment with "Today's entry!".) Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter our other blog giveaways while you're here!)

*An amazing sample was received for this review.  We would sing its praises even if we had to buy it ourselves.

Our Pet Armor Plus Pet Protection Story

UPDATE: Several commenters have alerted me to rumors of a recall of these products.  Please see the official response from Pet Armor on this topic here: http://www.petarmor.com/legal/media.php.
To date, we have not had any problems using these products on all of our pets.

We've already introduced you to the affordable option that Pet Armor and Pet Armor Plus have been providing pet owners who wish to protect their pets against ticks and fleas.  We actually tried this product last week, and we wanted to share how it worked:

The packaging is simple for Pet Armor's products.  We opened the pipette and applied the product to the back of our dog's neck (between the shoulder blades) and then turned him loose into the bathroom.  (He has a tendency to rub all over my couch when he is bathed or has to have any product put on him.  This way I ensured that he wouldn't try to rub off the Pet Armor, as well.)

Here is a happy Gilbert after applying the product.

He really didn't care much one way or the other.  Now, however, I know that he is protected for a full 30 days.  I could fill out the date of the application on a sticker that came in the product packaging.  You can either put it on your calendar or fridge (it comes off just fine when you're done.)

If you're wondering about how effective the product is, look at how it compares to Frontline for dogs:

If you're not already using a flea and tick product like Pet Armor for your pet due to the cost, I completely understand.  It can be hard to afford just what your pets need to be safe.  If you have children in the home, however, its just as important to protect your kids from the pests that can come in as hitchhikers on the backs of buggy dogs and cats, and these products have been made affordable to help you keep your house (and pets and kids) healthy and bug-free.  Available for much less than Frontline, we are excited about the chance to treat all 3 of our pets monthly for less.

Learn more about PetArmor and sign up for news and valuable offers at their website.  (And while you're here, check out this fun video interview with Mandy Moore about her pets!)

Take Inventory of Your Life (Chance to win!)

What if you experienced a house fire, or perhaps your home was torn apart by tornado, flood, or other natural disaster?  Would you know what to have replaced by your insurance policy?

Sadly, many Moms wouldn't know what all they had in their home at the time of the horrible event, leaving them to try to come up with a list of their possessions from memory.  This would almost surely result in missing something valuable -- and the small things really add up, too!  Taking a home inventory BEFORE the event is the best way to make sure you'll have everything covered.

If you are a mom with an iPhone, you'll love this app called MyHOME Scr.APP.book from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).  It's free, and it lets you store photos, descriptions, bar codes, and more to help you maintain an accurate list of your valuables.

The NAIC also has some useful tips for getting your survey done right (you can find their inventory checklist for those without an iPhone here):
10 Steps to Conducting a Home Inventory
  1. Make a list of possessions, including ‘celebration’ purchases such as jewelry and fine art. Think about family heirlooms, collections and furniture. Also consider items related to everyday leisure time, from flat-screen televisions to custom guitars.
  2. Take note of commonplace items such as toys, CDs, and clothing. And don’t forget items you rarely use such as holiday decorations, sports equipment, tools and high-ticket items kept outside your home such as landscape art and swing sets.
  3. Attach copies of original sales receipts and/or appraisal documents to your inventory. Be sure to note model and serial numbers.
  4. Group your possessions into logical categories, i.e., by hobby, by room in your home.
  5. Carefully photograph or videotape each item and document a brief description including age, purchase price and estimated current value.
  6. Remember to open drawers and closets to document what’s inside.
  7. Store your home inventory and related documents in a safe, easily accessible place such as online, a fire-proof box or in a safe deposit box. You may want to share a copy with your insurance provider so he or she can make necessary updates to your coverage.
  8. Review and update your inventory annually and whenever you make a significant purchase.
  9. To get started, download the free myHOME Scr.APP.book app for iPhone® users by visiting the iTunes® App Store or searching ‘NAIC’ in the app store from your phone.
  10. Or go to http://home.insureuonline.org to print a simple home inventory checklist.

The Perfect Last-Minute Mother's Day Gift

I know that it's late, but if your family is like mine, they have NOT gotten their act together for Mother's Day.  (As I write this, my son is busy making crafts for all the moms, and hubby is telling me why cards are cliche.)  I have always been pretty clear that a photo frame was something that I wouldn't be impressed with.  After all, you have to load up all those photos, and it seems like an unnecessary expense to show off some pics.  I couldn't be more wrong, however, when I was sent the Kodak Pulse digital frame to try out.  This puppy rocks.

First, let me tell you about this frame.  Mama like.  Set up was painless, thanks to an intuitive touch screen and great directions.  (Note: I did run into a small snafu when the frame said that it couldn't connect.  A quick visit to the Kodak site told me that I needed to update the software in the frame.  2 minutes and it was ready to go!)  Then I went through and transferred all the photos on my PC from the past 3 years that I thought were adorable and sent them to the frame wirelessly.  They uploaded really fast.  I thought that the process was way quicker than uploading to photo printing sites.  The frame itself is nice-looking.  It has clear imaging, and shows up well in all kinds of lighting.  You can adjust the settings (again, with the touchscreen) to tweak the length of time between photos and whether you would like one photo to appear, like this:

or several in a collage, like this:

The frame holds thousands of pics, depending on the quality.  It's really neat to look over to the frame and see pics from our past.  Way better than flipping through an album!
We also tried out the Kodak easyshare M532 camera, which was perfect timing (because my old Canon was on its last leg.)  This is my first Kodak point and shoot, and while I had only played around with it for a few days, I was very impressed by the following features:
  • The camera was slick-looking and lightweight.  It felt awesome in my hands.
  • The view screen on the back was clear and accurately displayed my pics.
  • There was a simple "Smart Capture" feature that automatically figured out which scene I was taking and adjusted the lighting and other details for me. When I wanted to do something funky with the pics, however, I was in control.
  • There is a neat new "people tags" feature that lets you tag people in you pictures before you connect the camera to the computer.  This comes in handy when you want to use the "Share" button to select photos for your Facebook page.  When they upload, they are automatically tagged for you!
Here is a fun picture I took using the Kodak M532

I'm not a professional photog, and my experience with point-and-shoots is all I have.  I thought that it came out sweet, however, and I can see this being my "go-to" camera for outings and some blog postings.

There is so much more to tell you about these products, but I'm sure you have a Mother's Day to get ready for!  I spent all day yesterday experimenting with both, and I'm sure I'll find more uses as the days go on.  You can find both the M532 and the Kodak Pulse frame for sale on Mother's Day at Walmart stores and Walmart.com!
