June DIY: Make Your Own Dried Cherries!

We had an amazing amount of cherries on our little dwarf tree this year!  The branches were bending down from the weight of all the fruit, and I was dreading all the canning that I would have to do to keep too many from going to waste.  It occurred to me that I could dry the cherries with a standard food dehydrator, making them into a delicious snack we could eat for months!

I started by getting a Ronco food dehydrator, available at Walmart.com.  It is less than $40, and uses less energy than a dehydrator with a fan.  (It also takes longer to dry the fruit, however.)

Then, I picked all the cherries, rinsed them, and set up my table for pitting.

I have a pitter that pits four cherries at a time.  I love it!

Then, I simply set the cherries in the drying tray, leaving a bit of space between them.

I put all the trays into the dehydrator, plug it in, and wait between 4-10 hours.  I leave one tray empty at the bottom to "catch" any that fall through the small spaces.

They look like beautiful, burgundy raisins when they are done!  They taste delicious, are great for less-messy snacking, and I can put them into baked goods and cookies later.

This was a fun and easy way to store cherries.  They take up considerably less room than canning (and are less messy, too!)

Have you ever dried anything with a food dehydrator?

Seriously.... Cocoa Puffs Brownie Crunch?

I love some sweet cereal as a treat before bed on late nights.  One of my go-to varieties is Cocoa Puffs!  We recently tried out the NEW kind of Cocoa Puffs -- Brownie Crunch. It's pretty awesome, and definitely filled my need for something sweet in the evening.

Yep, it tastes like brownies, and my kids like it too (of course.)  Here are some tasty tidbits about this special treat:
Cocoa Puffs Brownie Crunch has at least 8 grams of whole grain (48 grams recommended daily) and a good source of calcium and Vitamin D in every serving. For chocolate lovers everywhere, Cocoa Puffs Brownie Crunch is sure to become a choco-licious go-to!
If I had to choose between ice cream (which might not fill me up), or a bowl of the Brownie Crunch with some skim milk, I'm going with the cereal.  How about you?

You can find out more information on Big G Cereals at the Big G Grow Up Strong Website and the Whole Grain Nation Website.

Wanna win?  We have a fun prize pack to give away, including a box of the Brownie Crunch cereal, two cereal on the go containers, and a Frisbee!

To be entered to win, just tell us when you think you'd munch on the cereal.  We'll give you until July 12th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. There is a limit of (1) entry per person. Giveaway is open to U.S 18+ only. (Don't forget to enter our other blog giveaways while you're here!)

WhoNu Cookies Surprised Us! (Giveaway)

Cookies.  Vitamins.  What could these two things possibly have in common?

Apparently, there is a yummy way to sneak in lots of good things for your body into a delicious cookie that tastes like a cookies -- and it's made by WhoNu!

WhoNu sent us a few varieties of their cookies to try.  First, they look like cookies:

Secondly, they taste like cookies.

With one variety (the chewy chocolate chip), I swear I could taste a very faint off-taste after I was done chewing, but it was nothing bad.  It was similar to what you would get after eating a vitamin.  My kids couldn't tell at all, and the adult guests we had over one night had no idea, either.  The vanilla and chocolate sandwich cookies were the best!  I think I could replace my cookie habit with this snack and feel better about it!

These cookies are loaded with good stuff, and include 20 essential vitamins and minerals, plus 3 grams of dietary fiber!

They come in crunchy chocolate chip, chew chocolate chip, chocolate sandwich, and vanilla sandwich!  Learn more about the cookies at the WhoNu? website!

Wanna Win?  We are giving TWO winners a neat price pack (each receives 4 boxes of WhoNu? Cookies and a $25 Walmart gift card).  To be entered to win, just tell us which variety you think you'll like best.  We'll give you until July 8th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. Who said boys' clothes had to be low-rent?  If cute but sturdy fashions that look like a lot of love went into them is your thing, the clothing from Tom and Drew will likely appeal to your inner fashion sense.  Just take this too-sharp shark tee that my 6-year-old NEVER takes off (seriously, he wears it to bed.)

He is so proud when he wears it.  His brothers are a bit jealous.  It makes his eyes "pop."  What else can we say?

Just one casual offering from a pretty impressive line from Tom and Drew, the shirt is a playful way for boys to show their personalities!

Experiencing the "Fruit" of Our Labors with a DIY Yard Orchard

One of the things that we really loved about our home when we first moved in 2 years ago was that it had fruit trees.  We experience a bounty of cherries, mulberries, and some apples, too!  Unfortunately, our cherry tree is getting old, and only one half of the poor thing produces anymore.  Also, we wanted more variety in our harvest - you can only do so much with green apples!

We had talked of expanding our "orchard" to something more fun, and browsed through catalogs for the past two springs as we tried to decide what to do.  Then, Walmart approached us with the chance to get a few things as part of a "prepare your yard for summer" post, and we knew that fruit trees were the right way to go!

For less than $150, we got eight (yes, count them) trees to pump up the volume on our fruit harvest.  While it will take between 3-5 years to see any fruit from the new trees, we look forward to starting our investment now (and they look beautiful in the meantime.) Walmart had so many trees left this time of year, as well as shrubs, perennials, mulch, and soil.  It was really a one-stop shop for our yard needs.  (I also love that they have a one-year guarantee on their trees.)

Here is the car that my hubby managed to get all eight trees into!  (It's a Saturn, too!)

Spacing the trees was the hardest part, although my husband handled that.

He also handled digging the holes and planting.

The kids helped with mulch.

What did I do?  I took pictures and offered advice ;)

I love our new orchard, and it's going to help feed my growing family for years to come!  How have you prepared your yard to better serve you and your kids?

Why Teach Your Baby to Read? Here are Four Reasons

The following is a well-written and intriguing guest post by J. Richard Gentry PhD. We hope you enjoy is as much as we did!

Language proficiency in the brain develops rapidly from birth to age 6.
Your baby is absorbing language at a stunning pace well before she can speak or read. Her brain will triple in size during her first year of life, and will be almost as big as yours by the time she enters kindergarten. This is the critical period when many of the neural pathways establishing language proficiency form. For babies and toddlers, learning to read isn’t work--it’s just a really fun activity to do with Mom or Dad.

Babies who do literacy activities with their parents have an enormous advantage.
As a parent, if you spend just 5 minutes a day with your baby doing early literacy activities--electronic reading programs, reading aloud, and other positive parent/child reading and spelling games and activities--your baby can have a 32-million-word advantage by kindergarten over children who did not get this exposure.

A baby’s brain is especially suited to early reading.
Beginning as early as 8 months of age, a baby’s brain has a special capacity for pattern recognition and connecting symbols with meaning. Babies also have good recognition memory and novelty preference, so they enjoy looking at pictures and word cards with their parents. Perceiving patterns and connecting symbols with meaning is what reading is all about. When shown contrasting word patterns 5 minutes a day with their parents, using books or multimedia technology like “Your Baby Can Read,” 2- and 3-year-olds can intuit phonics.

Because of their right-brain learning, babies have a special capacity for reading.
Babies and toddlers don’t learn to read like 6-year-olds, who develop left-brain reading systems through formal instruction. Instead, they begin as right-brain readers who pick up reading as easily as they pick up three languages if all three languages are spoken by their caregivers between birth and age 3. (It's not so easy for a 6-year-old child to pick up three languages simultaneously. The baby brain, not the 6-year-old brain, has special language and reading capacities.)

Yummy Muddy Buddies Giveaway!

One of my favorite indulgent snacks is Chex Muddy Buddies!  They are crisp Chex cereal coated in a peanut butter and chocolate coating and then dusted in powdered sugar!  They definitely aren't diet food -- and that's what makes them super-delicious!

It used to be that you could only buy them from your store at Christmas time (making it necessary to make your own the other times of year.)  Chex has listened to its fans, however, and they are now offering it year-round!

That's yummy news, isn't it?  You can learn more about this fab treat at the official Chex Mix Facebook page, and be sure to give you feedback on their products.  (Who knows?  Maybe your voice will be heard next!)

Wanna Win?  To celebrate, we are having a fun giveaway for one lucky reader.

It includes a bag of Chex Mix Muddy Buddies, an branded airtight sealed container, a snacking bowl, and a magnetic clip.   To be entered to win, just comment on this post with whether you will plan on eating Muddy Buddies outside of the holiday season.  We'll give you until June 30th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. There is a limit of (1) entry per person. Giveaway is open to U.S 18+ only. (Don't forget to enter our other blog giveaways while you're here!)

Does Your Dad "Get" Gadgets?

Gadgets and techie items are usually promoted heavily during Father's Day.  Unless it's a tool, however, I'm more likely to get excited over a gadget than my hubby.  That's why I took some time to really think about what he needed in a gadget and sought to get one for him at Walmart.com!

I decided on this simple, easy-to-use, play and play Maxell FM transmitter for our car.  It uses one of 4 frequencies to transmit whatever is playing on our iPod, iPhone, or MP3 player directly through our car speakers.  It was one of the most affordable ones Walmart offered, and I could order it to my home.

I opened it up, put in 3 AAA batteries, and plugged it into my iPhone.  We were listening to our iTunes account and Pandora channels in no time!

It's so small and lightweight!

Alien Ant Farm anyone?

The Burb is dusty, but the speakers work fine!

At just $15 bucks, this was a steal.  We had money left over to buy a few tunes from the Walmart store to load on my iPhone, too!

You can find several models of FM transmitters in Walmart stores and at Walmart.com.  Some allow you to plug them in and charge (instead of loading with batteries), and others offer more channels.  This suited our needs well, however, and I'm glad we went with a more affordable model.

Do you have a gadget in mind for your husband or Father this year?

Giving Allergies the Smack Down

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour conducted by Clever Girls Collective on behalf of Children's Claritin®. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program.

Allergies stink.  My kids have been fortunate to not be affected by them until recently.  With our home surrounded by corn and bean fields, it gets a bit tough around the spring and harvest seasons.  The only time allergies don't completely plague my middle son and 12-year-old daughter is in the winter (when all the plants are dead.)  Since that time of year is brief (and not the best time to play outside), we focus on how to make the warmer months more enjoyable for my family.

We take steps to help minimize allergies here on the farm, both by being proactive and by treating it when needed.  I make sure that the kids don't wear shoes in the house, and that they shed their clothes and shower upon coming in from playing outside each day.  While I have gotten lazy once or twice - letting the kids sleep in their play clothes - I always end up paying for it by having kids with snotty noses, itchy eyes, and fatigue.  We also use OTC meds, like Claritin, when needed.  (Thankfully, they have chewable options for kids that won't take liquid meds.)

Farm kids are just like any other kids, except their allergies may be different.  Whether they are getting bothered by the corn fields, or the chlorine in the public pool, we've learned to take the matters seriously.  Being consistent with our allergy "smack down" helps to make sure my kids enjoy their summers and feel good year-round!

This guide, featured below, contains some additional helpful tips for managing allergies.  They aren't just for kids, however.  If you are hubby are bothered by them, you'll find that they can work for you, too!

For more information visit www.facebook.com/Claritin. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

2 Last-Minute Gifts for Dad!

Dad deserves the best, doesn't he?  Whether he's a DIY kind of guy, or just likes to kick back with some sports, we've gone through dozens of product suggestions to find the right picks for this year's gift.  We're sure you'll find something for the Special Guy on your list, but here are two we couldn't pass up!

The 3M™ Fuel™ X2P Safety Eyewear & 3M™ Forceflex™ Safety Eyewear from the 3M Tekk line are perfect for protecting Dad's peepers from flying debris, dust, or materials while working.  We put these to the test and found them to be perfect for mowing and working in the shop.  They aren't clunky or heavy like other safety glasses, and they protect against the sun's harmful rays.  Since it's easy to drop a pair or accidentally crush them, we were very impressed by the Forceflex pair (shown) and its ability to withstand regular wear and tear (and even a bit of irregular activity, as well.)  They are stylish and can be worn all day!

If your Dad is the DIY kind, you'll want to check out the entire line of 3M Tekk protection, especially the valved respirators and the neat new protective earmuff with AM/FM stereo!

Dad's often get nice pens (along with those pesky ties), but can you say that you've given your father something as flashy AND as practically cool as the new Sharpie Stainless Steel?  This brushed metal pen is durable, and marks smooth like a fat Sharpie should.  It's also refillable, making it something Dad can remember you by -- always!

Find this "sharp" gift idea wherever Sharpie products are sold!

What will you get Dad this year?

*We received samples of some items in our gift guide. Others we purchased ourselves. No additional compensation has been provided in exchange for being featured in our guide. In other words, "if we don't like it, you won't find it here!"

Booster Seat and Emma's Garden Dress Recalls

Target stores expand their booster seat recall to include more of the Circo Seats, which have been reported to be defected and have caused children to fall.  See the full recall details here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11248.html

The Emma's Garden dresses in Black and Pink polka dots were sold at TJMax and Winners, and the buttons on the front can come off and cause a choking hazard.  Details for this recalls can be found here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11249.html

Stay Safe!!

E*TRADE BabyMail for Father’s Day is a Funny FREE Gift Idea!

This is too funny...

You know those adorable E*TRADE babies on the commercials?  It turns out that you can create a free ecard for a Dad in your life this Father's Day with a personalized greeting from the babies. (You can even upload your own baby's pic or your voice.)  Just remember to review the message before you send it.  My card makes a strange mention of "Oklahoma" at the end, because I was in a hurry and didn't preview it.  (It was supposed to say "Okay.")  I guess this just makes it funnier!

First Father's Day with Baby: What Would You Buy?

It isn't officially our "first" Father's Day with our 5th child Marcus.  He technically turned one on the 11th, but since I was just getting out of the hospital with him during last year's celebration (and things were quite chaotic), we figured this year could be the first one we celebrate with him around.

Walmart was our destination to pick up a few "Baby's First Father's Day" gifts, and since my hubby is such a sports fan -- specifically college football -- we were happy to see so many product choices with our local team, The Huskers!

We decided to pick out something that told Dad that he has a new little teammate to help him cheer at this year's games, and we grabbed a onesie with the team logo on it for less than $12! We also intended to get a few pics of Marcus in his new onesie to upload into a photo card from Walmart.com.  At first, he was anything but happy with our photo shoot:

But he quickly regained his composure after a snack and some tickling:

In addition to the baby's gear, we also planned to gift the Father of our family with some neat Huskers gear for him to wear.  Walmart had some neat athletic tees and a cool belt with buckle for under $25!  My sons had a great time picking out items from the large selection at our local store.

Is your Dad a sports fan?  Do you have a little fan-in-training that will be celebrating his first Father's Day?  We'd love to hear about your team picks and the gifts you buy for Dad this year!
