Any Thoughts on Walmart's Lighting?

As a Walmart Mom, I get my share of feedback about Walmart.  Some of it is good, but some of it is bad.  Since many of you have asked for a chance to share your thoughts on store lighting.. here is your chance!  Walmart will be listening to what you have to say about it via this survey.  HURRY!  You just have a day or so to get your ideas in.

Once again, you can take the survey here.  Thanks so much for your feedback!

*I am a voluntary participant in the Walmart Moms program. Walmart provided me compensation for my time and efforts to write this post and share the survey. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.

Five Fabulous Bloggers

Thanks to Trop 50 for sponsoring my writing about fabulous bloggers. This year Trop50 is granting 50 fabulous wishes. Click here to enter for a chance to win $1,000 to help grant a friend's wish!

I know so many bloggers in so many niches.  While I really believe that content is the key to having a successful blog, I've grown to appreciate the kindness and community that take these top five bloggers to the next level.  Who are they?

What? I only get to pick 5? (Photo by Neeta Lind)

Myscha Theriault - What can I say about Myscha?  She has been a fellow Wise Bread blogger with me for a few years now, and we've shared more than our share of ups and downs together, both personally and professionally.  Whether it's a mid-week phone call to cry over lost clients, or the giant boxes of baby items that she shipped to me from Florida for my last bundle of joy, Myscha is always there.  Always.  You can read all her great stuff at The Lesson Machine and We Be Sharin.

Lynnae McCoy - I first met Lynnae as part of the Walmart Moms group.  She is a frugal blogger, as well, and someone I feel comfortable sharing my faith and love of politics with.  We have been roomies at several events, and I know that I'll always have someone to ditch the blog conference party with so that we can kick back with some hot tea and late night news at the hotel.  Yeah, we're predictable, but that's how we roll.  Read more of Lynnae's hobbies and passions at BeingFrugal and FreelanceHomeschoolMom.

Jennae Petersen - Another Walmart Mom, Jennae and I have a special story.  We were assigned roomies back at one of my first blog conferences... only Jennae spent the whole trip sick with the flu.  I remember feeling so bad for her, but I really got to know her this way.  She is such a caring, compassionate person, and it shows in her blog posts - which are a brilliant mix of design and a love for our natural world.  A great mom, super friend, and one of the most gifted designers I know, Jennae's work is featured at her blog Green Your Decor and at her professional design site: Hibiscus Creative (look her up if you need a blog design!)

Jodi Grundig - I met Jodi at Mom 2.0 (the first year), after being on her newsletter list for many months.  At the time, she was one of the only product review/feature bloggers that I knew -- besides myself, of course.  Jodi is such a warm and lively person, full of great positive energy.  We had a great time dancing with everyone at the Chris Mann concert, wearing BK bags on our heads, and forgetting all about the world for awhile.  Since then, Jodi has become quite a success, but she is still the most down-to-earth, supportive gal I know.  You can find her at her website, where she lists all her amazing projects.

You - Yeah... yeah.. I know that this is kind of a cop-out, but there so many out there that I love and appreciate, but don't have room to include.  I get so many emails, facebook messages, and phone calls about how to start out blogging, and (truth be told), I think that anyone who has the guts to start a blog and keep at it deserves to be on my Fabulous Bloggers list.  The fact is, you really can make money blogging, and even if you aren't in it for the cash, it is incredibly therapeutic and can bring your writing skills to a professional level in just a few short years.  I have seen so many books published and lives changed through blogging -- all because someone dared to write that first word.  If you blog, you ARE Fabulous!

Don't forget to enter the 50 Fabulous Wishes contest for a chance to win $1,000 to support a friend's wish. I was selected for this Tropicana Trop50 sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses
Blog With Integrity
, as I do. I received compensation to use and facilitate my post.

Two Toy Recalls

Two recalls to be aware of:

Family Dollar recalls the Authentic Heroes Target Practice Tank play set with remote control tank due to burn hazard.

These butterfly push toys sold at flea markets were recalled due to a choking hazard.  The wings can break, causing the balls inside to spill out.

Stay safe!!

Fresh Start: Our Top Products for Taking the Weight Off

It's been a fun few weeks around here, as we work towards our Fresh Start goals with the help of Walmart and select partners.  Last week, a big box of Walmart orders came to my door, and my new home gym was ready to be created!  Since we don't have much for space in this small house, we are working to redo our garage as a workout room.  In the meantime, we've managed to put most everything in the living room to use throughout the day.  Here are our favorite products so far:

Xbox 360 with Kinect

Wow!  I'm blown away by how fun this is!  We have only played the game that came with the system so far, but I can feel some muscles being used, and I'm addicted to the various activities that make you jump, duck, and dive for points.  The best part of this gaming system is that the kids and I have enjoyed playing together.  The only negative I can see to the Kinect is that it takes quite a bit of room to play it well.  (Our living room is rather spacious, but for two people to play correctly, you need an almost 10 x 10 area, which involves moving furniture.)  I'm excited to start getting more active with the Your Shape game in the next week.  (I'll update you as we go.)  I won't be connecting it to the internet at this point because our  home network is already rather taxed, and I don't need the kids accidentally uploading or sharing photos and scores. Maybe when they are older.... ($299 for the game bundle and accessories at Walmart)

Gold's Gym Circuit Trainer Mini Trampoline

If your knees bug you, you'll love this mini trampoline.  I got quite sweaty and exhausted by just doing half of the DVD workout that comes with the equipment, and I encourage my daughter to lightly bounce on it while watching TV to help get some exercise into our day.  All in all, this takes up very little room, and it is very well-constructed (can hold up to 250 pounds.)  Negatives include:  Difficult to initially set up -- takes two very STRONG people to fold it open -- and the bounce counter does not work well.  Positives:  It's addictive and one really effective way to strengthen your core, even if you have joint or back issues. ($35 at Walmart)

Shake Weight

Don't let the commercial fool you.  Using the Shake Weight is HARD work!  It's not battery powered and takes a lot of muscle to move it like you see in the ads.  Also, you need just the right form to get it to go.  However, once you master it (which takes about a day or two), you can feel it working right away!  Change up your exercises to target different muscles, or use the included DVD for guidance.  It's the best 6 minutes you can give your arm muscles! ($20 for the Women's weight and $20 for the Men's at Walmart)

So far, we've lost 4.5 pounds since Thanksgiving!  We're taking it slow, because I'm nursing.  It's not healthy to lose more than a half a pound or so while feeding my son.  I'm excited to see how well I can do before this spring!  Check back later in the week, and we'll tell you about 4 more products that we tried as part of our Fresh Start program.

Have You Checked Out the Motherboard?

There are literally hundreds of places for moms to get together online and chat about things that are important to them every day.  One of the newest (and in my opinion, promising) places to hang out and get to know other moms is The Motherboard!

I'm featured as the "Motherboard Mom of the Week" today, giving some insights into free things families can do for fun!  We love board games, and still firmly believe them to be one of the best ways to develop relationships with the kiddos and not spend a dime!  If you don't have a fully-stocked game cabinet, start picking up a game or two over the next few months.  You can even buy them on clearance, from a yard or library sale, or pick them up at a used shop.

Check out The Motherboard for easy organizing tips, discussions with other moms, or to post a question you have about anything Mom-related.  You can also find other Walmart Moms Erika Lehmann and Tara Kuczykowski in their content.

Hallmark Baby Announcements for the New Mom!

Hallmark.com is announcing the “birth” of its own newest arrival – Personalized Baby Announcements!  Even with my little guy almost 7 months old, I can appreciate a beautifully done set of announcements.  With family not always around to see the baby right after birth, it can give everyone a way to enjoy the newest addition -- even if they live hundreds of miles away!

I got to see some samples of these up close and personal at the SXSW conference in 2010.  When I had the chance to try them out online, I was hooked!  You can visit the website, pick you favorite look, and add your little one's photo and a message of your choice.  Then leave it up to Hallmark:  They will print the addresses, add postage, and mail them on a date of your choice.  New moms have so much to do already, why not let Hallmark do some of the work?

Do you have a special design that you like best?  If so, let us know in the comments.. I especially love this Sophisticated Blue Flourish  look.

Guess what, tech-savvy moms -- Hallmark now has an iPhone app! Check it out to get special offers, discounts, and directions to the store nearest you!

Review of Ice Breakers Frost Sugar-free Mints

If fresh breath is a concern, you're probably always carrying a little packet of mints or gum in your purse.  I tend to gobble up a tin of mints, in no time, and I'm not really supposed to be eating much sugar due to dental issues.  Ice Breakers Frost Sugar-Free mints are a great choice for balancing the icy coolness of a great breath mint and the smart sense of not ruining your teeth.  I tried the Wintercool variety this past week, and I was quite satisfied!

The little mints are hard, so they last quite a while.  They don't leave a strange color in your mouth or on your teeth, and they contain xylitol (which is important if you don't want the sugar bugs eating up your enamel.)  Best of all, they are super minty.  I could pop one in and still feel the freshness an hour later!

Ice Breakers Frost come in two sugar-free flavors: Peppermint and Wintercool.  Look for them at your grocer or check them out online!

Fresh Start Fun:Michael Jackson the Experience for the Wii

We've been working hard to incorporate exercise into our Fresh Start project!  Today, we gave the Michael Jackson the Experience for the Wii game a shot!  (Don't laugh... Mama needs to drop a few more pounds of that baby weight.)

As you can see, this is a blast to play!  Some parents may not want their kids to emulate all the dance moves (crotch-grabbing, for example), but there are plenty of routines that are family-friendly and easy enough for small kids to do.  We appreciate seeing just how much Jackson has contributed to the world of dance!

You can snag this great product at your local Walmart or online!

Evenflo Video Makes Us Giggle (Giveaway)

I'm a sucker for commercials that show the true grit involved with parenting.  I'm especially fond of the new series of online videos from Evenflo that show "How to Make Nappy Time Happy Time."  Translation: The only time new parents (or old parents, like me) get to spend romantic time with their spouse is when the baby is napping -- or playing, as shown in this video.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of this method.  I actually just bought an Evenflo ExerSaucer for my 7-month old.  I don't think I'd get ANYTHING done without it.

For some innovative and off-the-wall parenting tips designed to make you laugh (and that can introduce you to some of the benefits of toys like the ExerSaucer), visit the video home page.

Wanna Win?  We have a cute baby t-shirt to give away from Evenflo!  (You can never have too many baby t's, right?) To be entered to win, just comment on this post with how you keep baby "distracted."  You have until January 28th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in. One per person, please!

Review of Any'tizers QuesaDippers Snacks

Life can't always be about diet and exercise.. sometimes you just need to have fun!  With the upcoming football game and several family gatherings we will be having at our house, we have been looking for yummy ways to serve up snacks that take little prep on my part.  The newest offering from Any'tizers is QuesaDippers, and they are delicious!

These snacks are basically your typical quesadilla, but with a creamy chicken filling.  They warm up on a baking sheet in the oven in just a few minutes, and you can dip them in the included salsa, or serve them with your own dips.  My kids really liked these, and even my husband (who loathes processed-tasting foods) thought I made them myself.

With two yummy flavors to choose from: Taco Seasoned Chicken with Zesty Garden Salsa and Fajita Chicken with Cilantro Lime Salsa, you'll find just the right taste for your next party.   Find out more about this product from Tyson at their website!

A Fresh Start is Becoming Easier

I told you last week about my attempt at getting a fresh start with my health.  I'm here to report that things are going very well!

I'm sleeping more than I thought I would.  This is due, in part, to my son hitting the 7-month mark and sleeping a full 6 hours at night!  While he's not napping much, it means he sleeps longer at night, and I have been able to get 7-8 hours of sleep with only one interruption for nursing.

My oral health routine is also coming together.  I've gotten over the dread of having to floss daily, and remember to use my calcium paste is almost second-nature.  My teeth are even starting to appear whiter!  I am also pleased to report that I have less sensitivity (I can eat cold foods without discomfort now.)

Drinking water has been a bit of a battle.  I can't give up my coffee, but I am replacing one or two cups a day with decaf hot tea.  I also have been enjoying Crystal Light Pure Fitness as an alternative to bland water.  With no artificial sweeteners, I feel good about drinking it, and it really keeps me hydrated.

Now for the fun stuff:  food and exercise.  I have been doing GREAT with my snacks.  No candy, no cookies, just a daily Special K Chocolatey Drizzle Cereal Bar in the afternoon and a Yoplait Original Yogurt at night.  I feel like I'm in control of my snacks, and I've still been able to bake cookies for the family and not eat any myself. (Well, maybe one.)

Meals have been made much easier thanks to the Tyson Grilled Ready Chicken Breast Strips that I purchased.  They are the best tasting of all the pre-cooked chickens I've tried.  They stay frozen until you need them, but they've been great to add to the top of salads (which I eat all the time.)  I can't believe how many strips you get in a serving.  Some days, I'm stuffed from my salad and come in under my calorie goals.  Other ways to enjoy them include in a whole-wheat tortilla, mixed into mac and cheese, and in the pasta with pea salad I made this week.

While I'm not counting calories, I do track what I eat.  Using the tools and tips online at Walmart's Health site, I've even made some progress in my eating habits.  (One of the recommendations was to eat sandwiches with just one piece of bread, instead of two. I've been doing this, and it's helped give me more calories to eat better foods that I really should be eating.)

Bottom Line: My New Year Fresh Start is going great!  I've been keeping moving, eating sensibly, and getting sleep.  While I really need to work on having more water, I'm learning ways to sneak it in -- and that's great!  Since my goal doesn't involve pounds, I'm not really looking to lose weight, but I've lost one in a week.

How are you doing on your own Fresh Start?

Have You Tried Essie?

As part two of two posts I'm doing on new beauty products available at Walmart, we tested the Essie nailpolish.  Essie was new for me (I hadn't tried the brand before), but was familiar with salon and high-end polishes.

As you can see from the video below, the polish is thinner than I am used to.  I need a little help!  The coverage is awesome, and the colors vibrant, however.  We're hooked!

You can find the various shades of Essie polish at your local Walmart.  They are also offering nail care solutions to address issues like brittle, weak, or dry nails.  At a price of $8 for the polish and $8 - 9.50 for the care solutions, I can see my budget liking this whole nail routine.  (And you'll be happy to know that Essie polish is 3-free; contains no formaldehyde, DBP or toluene. Also, Essie is not tested on animals!)

New Maybelline Beauty Goods Hit Walmart!

My makeup needs a makeover, so this sampling of new items from Maybelline came right on time!  We tried a variety of goodies for face, lips, and eyes -- here are my faves!

SuperStay 24 Lipcolor

This is my favorite kind of lipcolor in that it is a stain with a gloss (or "conditioning balm") that goes over it. (I've tried other brands in the past, and I've always been a fan.)  What's impressive about the SuperStay is that is really does stay on the lips fairly close to 24 hours. (The gloss, of course needs reapplied as you would a normal gloss.)  I actually prefer a matte look, so I don't use much of the clear gloss coat, if at all.  I put on my favorite shade, the Wildberry, at 8pm, and it really felt smooth.

The next morning, when I woke up, it was still very vibrant, and not flaky or dry-looking like other all-day lipcolors.  The shade seemed a bit dark for day and evening, so you may want to consider where you'll be headed when applying it.  (I might like to wear something darker for going out at night, but may not want to look that "done up" for the next morning's activities.)

One by One Volum' Express Mascara

I was offered both the waterproof and regular mascaras to try, but since I don't wear waterproof, I only tried the regular.  This mascara was impressive, in that it did make my lashes thicker, but not in a "spider" way.  They looked accented, not fake.  I didn't notice them being much longer, however.  I also like the brush, but found that it took several coats to get it as thick as I like.  The brush was very flexible, and those that like a stiffer wand may have problems using it.

As you can see, the eye on the left has the mascara lightly applied.  Available in Blackest Black, Very Black, and Brownish Black, there is a boldness level for every user.

On the plus side, I did find myself quite upset about something the day I used it and actually cried for the first time in about 2 months.  The mascara, while not waterproof, didn't drip all over my face.  It took my usual face wash to get all of it off my lashes, but it wasn't gunky like waterproof is, and I didn't lose lashes from taking it off.

FIT ME

This is a line of makeup solutions customized to your skin shade.  Just pick your true shade (mine is 115), and you'll find a liquid foundation, concealer, powder, and blush that goes well with your tone.  Designed to enhance what God gave you (not cover it up), this is light formula of color that provides nice coverage.  I used it over my regular moisturizer with no problem, and you can use it in conjuction with your favorite mineral veils or bronzers, as well.

All of these products are avaialable at your local Walmart for the following prices:

--SuperStay 24 Lipcolor $7.94
--One by One Mascara $6.48
--Fit Me Foundation & Powder $6.48
--Fit Me Concealer $5.48
--Fit Me Blush $4.48

Review of Tassimo T20 Brewer

I'm a coffee lover.  I drink it way too much, but have found that if I can drink higher quality coffee, I'm content with drinking less.  Recently, I received a Tassimo T20 Brewer in black to try out in my own kitchen.  The results were delicious!

This brewer is idiot-proof.  Just fill the back tank with water, place your cup under the spout, and insert the brewing cartridge of your choice.  With the press of a button, you'll have steaming hot coffee in no time.  No need to measure coffee!  If you want a bit more water in your brew, just press the "add water" button, and you can weaken it a little.  Since the coffee brewer reads the bar code on each cartridge, there's no guessing how much water you'll need.  Espresso varieties use less, and those big 16 oz blends will dispense more.  Just read the instructions on the variety you buy to find out what size cup you'll need.  The brewer does the rest!

I also love that this brewer is compatible with Starbuck's coffee cartridges.  By buying the coffee and signature latte cartridges, you can get an authentic Starbuck's coffee house experience in minutes.  They also have tea and cocoa cartidges, as well as a wide range of other coffee brands to choose from.  (There are also some fun color inserts you can buy to customize the look of your brewer to match any room!)

Is there anything I don't love about this machine?  Without a doubt, the coffee is more expensive per cup than brewing it in a traditional drip brewer.  However, if you are looking for the most authentic flavor, I think it's worth it.  (I tend to treat to myself with one cup from the Tassimo in the afternoon as a way to reward myself.)  Since I don't have a Starbucks within 40 minutes of where I live, this is a great way to experience a good latte without the drive.

Even those on a budget can keep the Tassimo stocked.  Amazon, in particular, often has the Tassimo cartridges on sale through their website.  You can learn more about the T20 and all it's super-cool functions at the Tassimo site!

Wanna win?  We are giving away one of the T20 Brewers, 2 kinds of coffee, and a color insert!  To be entered to win, just tell us what variety of coffee, tea, or cocoa you'd brew if you won!  You have until January 15th at 11:59pm CST to get your entries in.  One per person, please!

Giveaway is open to U.S. 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

It's Family Movie Night (Tomorrow Night)!

OOPS!  We got so excited for this movie that we told you the wrong night.  It's tomorrow (January 8th). Please accept our apologies.  See you then!

We've been telling you about the Walmart and P&G Movies for awhile now, and I can't believe how much better each movie is over the last one.  Tonight marks the event that I've been anxiously awaiting.. the newest Family Movie "Change of Plans."  Not only does this movie have a sweet story line (kids who are sort of "adopted" and raised by unprepared parents), it stars my favorite male lead Joe Flanigan.  (Those who follow SyFy remember him from the Stargate shows and a cameo on Eureka.)  Throw in the wit of Phylicia Rashad and the star power of Brooke White, and you've got some magic waiting to happen.

It's important to note that this smart film airs on FOX, tonight at 7pm.  (Previous Walmart Movie Nights were aired on NBC.)  If you haven't seen a Walmart Family Movie, this is a great one to start with.  I really see the message of family going a long way, and it's with less sap than some "family" movies that I've had to endure.  Your family will love this one!  (And this movie also contains a super soundtrack produced by American Idol's Randy Jackson -- featuring 4 new songs by Brooke White.)

You can learn all about this premier at the Walmart official movie website.  Remember: Like all the P&G films, if you miss it, you can get it on DVD at your local Walmart.
