Review of the Personal MicroDerm Kit from SkinCareRX.com

I've always wanted to try an at home microdermabrasion system, and thanks to a new review opportunity, I did! Working at a dermatology clinic in my early twenties, I was fascinated by the ladies that got the expensive treatments done by professionals, and I remembered how great their skin looked afterwards.  With the introduction of at-home kits, it became possible to do a similar treatment at your convenience, at a fraction of the cost.

Looking into the box of the personal microderm kit from SkinCareRx.com, I was a little intimidated at first.  Luckily, there was a DVD that explained how it worked, and it put my mind at ease.  I decided to try it out on a day when I didn't have to go anywhere (my skin is a bit sensitive), just in case it caused any irritation.  With the useful CD instructions, the high-quality wand (which was very sturdy), and the assortment of exfoliating discs, I can now use this anywhere I have skin issues (like my face, hands, and feet!)  It takes some time to show results, but I'm really eager to see how it does against a small scar on my hand long term, and also on the fine lines in my face.  It wasn't scary at all!

If you want to try microdermabrasion at home, but are a little apprehensive, I suggest a home product like this that comes with the instructional CD and a large assortment of discs.  With the cost of less than half of a professional visit, you can get several applications for much less than at a retail or clinical shop.

Wanna Save? Get 15% off the Personal Microderm now through Dec. 31st with Coupon Code: PMD15OFF at SkinCareRX.com.

Review of YoCrunch Fruit Parfait Yogurt

There's a new addition to the Breyer's YoCrunch line.. (remember when we first shared it with you?)  It's fruity and perfect for breakfast or snack time.  It's the YoCrunch Fruit Parfait yogurt, and it makes taking a healthy snack to school or work a breeze!

We sampled the Strawberry variety of yogurt, and since there were 4 servings in each pack, I shared with 3 of my kids (the little ones split one.)  The verdict was pretty much unanimous.  Served very cold, these had a nice fruit flavor, and the little granola pieces were lightly sweetened, but not over sweet.  They had a good texture that reminded me of higher-quality granola (more chewy than crunchy.)  Finishing a whole one was tough, since they are pretty filling.  At just 120 calories, however, they are a great way to fill up without going overboard.  (And if you replace these with a larger pre-made fruit parfait at a fast food or coffee place, you can save money, too!)

Learn more about the YoCrunch brand at their website, Facebook and Twitter pages!

Wanna Win?  We have 10 free product coupons redeemable for the new product to give away to lucky winners!  Just comment on this post with what flavor of the new Fruit Parfait Yogurt you'd like to try.   You have until October 10th at 11:59 pm CST to get your entries in, and you CAN ENTER EVERY DAY! (Just comment as directed for the first entry, and then enter with "today's entry" for each entry after that.) Giveaway is open to U.S. ages 18+ only, and be sure to give us a way to contact you if you win! (Don't forget to enter all of our giveaways while you're here!)

Review of E-Z Bat from Monkey Business Sports

My boys spend a lot of time outdoors.  Playing football, volleyball, and baseball keep them happy and fit, but it's sometimes difficult to include the youngest and oldest boys in the same game.  We recently tried out the  E-Z Bat from Monkey Business Sports and were really very pleased with how it worked.  It's a foam-covered bat with two foam balls that have holes in the center.  They slide over the end of the bat, up against a ring to keep them in place, and younger kids can swing the bat, sending the balls flying off the end of the bat.  Since there is no need to "hit", they can feel where the sweet spot of the bat is, and get practice on the proper form for a quality swing.

As kids get more skilled, they can remove the balls from the bat, and play the typical way.  (They can be hit off a tee or pitched to them.)  The balls and bat are soft, so there is little to no chance of injury when playing, and we enjoyed spending a sunny afternoon pitching balls to our oldest son, and letting the younger boys "swing" with the practice balls already on the bat.

This is a very smart product, one I recommend to parents who want to give their kids an advantage at baseball, softball, or t-ball at a young age.  (Or for non-competitive families that just want everyone to have a chance to play!)

You learn more about the E-Z Bat at www.monkeybusinesssports.com visit the Monkey Business Sports Facebook or YouTube pages.

Wanna Win? We have an E-Z Bat to give away to a lucky reader! To be entered to win, just visit the Monkey Business website and let us know what other product you like.

Mad Science KNOW Makes Learning More Fun!

My kids are learning junkies... provided you're not making them "work" at it.  We enjoy nature hikes, watching videos online, and sitting around reading books about everything from dinosaurs to chicken pox!  My kids are also fascinated with the magazines that I get in the mail every week, so they were thrilled to learn that we would be getting a magazine designed to help them learn for their very own!

Mad Science KNOW magazine contains all kinds of learning opportunities for kids ages 6-9.  With puzzles, games, and articles designed to making education a game, it's definitely something that my kids will fight over when it arrives in our mailbox every two months.  With so much money spent on video games, cable tv, and movies, it's a great idea to set aside a bit of money in the family budget for something that kids can read, hold in their little hands, and get out time and again!

This magazine is perfect for long car rides, homeschooling lessons, or just for fun when screen time is being limited.  With topics covering science and math that can be done via fun experiments and puzzles, our kids are excited to receive their next issue! (And the website includes free teacher's guides to give you ideas on how to use the magazine in your classroom!)

Get a preview of the free online issue before you buy at http://www.knowmag.ca/shapes/  OR visit the official website at http://www.knowmag.ca/

Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse Test Drive: Part One

We were picked to give an all-in-one mouth rinse product a try, and so for the past couple weeks, we've been using the Crest Pro-Health Complete Rinse day and night to see if the formula's six different benefits work better than brushing alone.  While I haven't been to a dentist to see in the past month to see how it might affect things like cavities, I wanted to see how this product would help me in the next month.  Before this test drive, I would brush with a whitening toothpaste, floss daily, and use a rinse, when I think to.  I've since added the rinse twice a day to my routine, and I'm really excited to see if it helps!

The Crest Rinse has 6 benefits AND contains fluoride (so you don't want young kids to use it):

Ö              Re-builds enamel
Ö              Helps prevent cavities
Ö              Cleans teeth & gums
Ö              Kills bad breath germs
Ö              Freshens breath
Ö              Without the burn of alcohol

My husband and I are both adding it to our routine, and while it is early yet, I can tell that I really like using it.  It's not harsh (alcohol-free) and has a pleasant taste.  Since I'm likely to stick with products that won't cause me to change my habits too much, I think I have a good chance of seeing some noticeably positive changes in my oral health.

To read up on this new product, visit the Crest website.  We'll be back at the end of our test drive to tell you how it went!

*Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a test drive campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Crest and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Review of Scientific Explorer Blissful Body Mist Kit

Looking for a fun way to introduce scientific principles that are fit for a fun night in with the girls?  The Scientific Explorer collection of "science kits" are no more than a few mix and make kits for some common beauty products, but the easy directions and accompanying parent guides give them street cred as educational, too!

We recently tried out the Blissful Body Mist Kit with my 12-year-old daughter and her 8-year-old cousin.  They were having a girls night, and I thought it would be fun to have them make their own body sprays as a project.  I read the directions out loud (very simple.. anyone can do it) and then allowed them to make their own body sprays by putting just the right amount of scented oils into the pre-filled body mist water.  What resulted was lots a giggles, a little bit of listening to the scientific principles behind the activity, and a lightly-scented mist all over everything in my home.

I loved that, while the kids didn't listen to all the fun facts about how smell works and what makes a solution, the resulting product was a fun LIGHTLY-scented body mist that both the girls were happy to wear.  The kit makes 3 scents, so it's good for a slumber party or homeschool science class that needs a little bit of fun mixed in.

You can see all of the kits available from GiddyUp and the Scientific Explorer spa line at the GiddyUp website.

Review of The Cat in the Hat Series on DVD

I learned to read by watching educational television. Now, I feel like it's equally important to be sure that the shows my kids watch are teaching them, too!  With all the love we feel for Dr. Seuss and the Cat in the Hat books, we were thrilled to find out that there is a new series featuring the lovable (and kind of crazy) cat and his way with prose.

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Is a series of educational videos featuring Martin Short as the voice of the cat.  It teaches kids about the world around them in fun ways, using humor and song.  My kids didn't even realize that they had learned quite a bit about bees by watching the first DVD, Wings and Things.  Did it appeal to all my kids? You bet!  The 3-year-old was mesmorized, and my 12-year-old protested me asking her to take out the trash... "But MOM!  I'm watching this!"  She was hooked.

The DVD is available in stores everywhere, and contains lots of fun facts about birds, bees, and more!  Get it from Amazon for under $12

Review of Chocolate Mint Jello Mousse Temptations

We've already told you about how much we dig the Jello Mousse Temptations.  They are a low-cal way to get some indulgence into a day, and we haven't changed the way we feel about that!  The recent addition of another awesome flavor just made our feelings for the 60-calorie snacks -- Chocolate Mint!

Since chocolate mint is a favorite flavor of mine, I really enjoyed sampling these.  They are available in stores right now, and because my hubby hates mint -- they're all mine!  Check out the stats on this treat:
Chocolate Mint Sensation
Calories: 60; Total Fat: 3g; Saturated Fat: 2g; Sugar: 0g; Protein: 2g; Fib

You can get the delicious new flavor (along with the classics: Caramel Crème, Chocolate Indulgence and Dark Chocolate Decadence) in the fridge section of your grocer!

*Yummy samples were received for this review.  I would still think they were yummy if I had bought them myself.

Get out the Wiggles During your Game Time Party!

Football is in full swing!  In addition to all the grubbing my family loves to do during the game, we also like to take time during the halftime shows to play some fun games.  We keep our board game closet fully-stocked, and we especially enjoy the ones that get the kids active (and help the wiggles run out) so that they can sit and let the grownups watch the game again when it resumes!

(The boys taking a "time out" from football to enjoy the outdoors.)

Fun football themed activities you can do include:
  • Throw the football around (outside, of course.)
  • Design a football - Cut out footballs from brown construction paper and decorate with designs representing your favorite team (or princesses, if you're kids aren't into football.)
  • Take lot of silly photos for a football-themed digital scrapbook at the end of the season
  • Pick up as you go - I'm serious!  Have the kids help clear dirty dishes, pick up toys, and keep the TV room tidy during commercials and at half time.  Give them points for every item picked up, which can later be redeemed for "tidy trophies!"
We may not have the most killer parties at our house, but what can you say -- I'm a Mom of 5!  We do have lots of laughs and enjoy cheering our team on.

How do you keep things fresh and fun for your football-loving family?

Review of Simple Shoes for Kids and Babies

This is a review that I've been anxious to do for months!  I received a gorgeous pair of little boys Simple Shoes in small, but my baby didn't fit into them until just now (and there is still room to grow.)  These adorable shoes have so many advantages over the shoes I put my older kids in:
  • Simple Shoes are made from sustainable material (eco-certified suede and certified organic cotton lining, in this case).  The shoe stuffing and shoebox are made from post-consumer recycled paper and the printed ink on the box is soy-based! You can feel good about what you buy from Simple Shoes.
  • The shoes themselves are too cute!  Even with the few styles available for tiny babies, the color variety is wonderful!  (Our son's "blue suede shoes" are bold and trendy -- much more so than most shoes you buy for babies in retail outlets.)
  • Simple on and easy off!  That's the motto of these super sneaks with elastic shoes laces that don't tie up.  You just pull on the tongue and slip em on!
  • Can you say "WASHABLE"??? Really, can you think of anything better?

These shoes are tops for my family.  At an affordable $30 for the Weetire Washable Suede shoe (the style we reviewed), they easily rival other designer infant shoe brands in cuteness and functionality.

You can see the entire line of Simple Shoes for babies, kids, and adults at their website www.simpleshoes.com!

*A sample pair of shoes was received for this review. My opinion of how adorable my baby looked in them is 100% my own.

Get Ready for Game Time!

I married a football lover.  Not exactly a national league lover.. but definitely a college fan!  We love to sit the kids down in the living room and show them HOW much we love the game, by getting them involved in watching the plays, eating snacks, and listening to my husband yell "TOUCHDOWN!"

It used to scare my oldest son that we would get so excited.  Now, he knows that football is a time to enjoy some great food -- it's one of the few times that I really make some good recipes!

Check out this yummy chicken taco soup that I threw together.  It's simply 2 diced chicken breasts, a yellow pepper, red onions, pinto beans, fresh garlic, a little taco seasoning, chicken broth, and Tabasco sauce.  The kids thought it was just right, and the grown ups added a bit more spice into their bowls with some fresh salsa and a little more Tabasco!

I even went the extra mile with some homemade tortilla strips.  To make them, just cut up 4-5 large burrito-sized flour tortillas with kitchen shears, then place in a single layer in a baking sheet at 350 degrees.  When they get lightly browned, take them out!  They need no extra seasoning, and go great crumbled up into the soup!

I usually buy all of my game time snacks in the week before the season starts, but the snacks never last more than a week or two.  We make sure that when it's football season, we always add some special snacks to the top of the staple list, just in case a friend pops over unannounced to watch the game.  (Chips, soda, pretzels, and sweets are a treat just for the football season!)

What does your family serve up during game time?  We want to know!  GO HUSKERS!!

We Tackle Tough Stains with the Help of our Wisk Scientist Assistants

We are ready to share some exciting news about how well the new Wisk® with Stain Spectrum™ Technology works!  We recently tried the solution on a stained fabric swatch to see what it did against tough protein stains.  Here is what we discovered:

As you can see, with just the Wisk and a bit of warm water, you can tackle the ugly stains caused by typical household accidents (grass stains, blood, food, etc.).  I can't wait to see how well this would work in my HE machine with warm or even hot water cycles!  (The smell, by the way, is awesome!)  My kids had a blast with this experiment, and we are ready to try Wisk in our daily laundry routine.

Stay tuned for more Wisk updates on our battle against clothing stains!  (And find out what Wisk is up to on their Facebook page.)

Review of Kraft Sandwich Shop Mayo

I love sandwiches, but rarely make them at home because I'm usually missing the fixings that make them yummy to me.  Since it's garden season, however, I've had tomatoes, green peppers, and access to cheap fresh produce from the local markets and grocery store.  This means my favorite sandwich:  turkey pastrami, green pepper, red onion, tomato, lettuce, American cheese and mayo!

The Kraft Sandwich Shop Mayo has been an exciting way to jazz up the sandwich.  It's full of flavor, so you only need to use a little bit to make your sandwich taste like something from a restaurant.  My favorite is the Garlic and Herb.  It's so rich, that you only want to use about half of what you'd use with regular mayo.  My son loves it so much that I caught him making a sandwich with JUST the mayo on bread.  (I made him add some meat and cheese.)

I also love the Chipotle flavor.  It's spicy, but not HOT and tastes wonderful on roast beef.  There are two other flavors, the Hot and Spicy (which I left for my husband to review) and the Horseradish-Dijon (sorry, I don't do horsey sauce.)  All in all, these are a wonderful way to give bold flavor to your ordinary sandwich, and the easy squeeze dispensers make them good for little kids to use.  (I sometimes let my kids make "whatever you want sandwiches."  The only rule is that they EAT whatever they make.  No exceptions.)

You can check out the recipes for using the flavorful mayos at the Kraft website!

Review of Natural Vine's Licorice

I'm a HUGE licorice lover, especially when I'm watching TV.  It's always been the perfect low fat snack for when I feel in a "chewy" mood.  Ya know what I mean?

We recently sampled some Natural Vines black and red licorice from the American Licorice Company, and I was astounded at the freshness of this natural candy.  They boast an awesome list of perks:  They contain no artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, cholesterol or trans fat.  In addition, they are sweetened with molasses and pure cane sugar.  They are flavored with natural licorice extract, and contain only 17 calories per chewy piece.

These are not as sweet as some of the licorice brands you may be used to, but they have a wonderful flavor that make them very satisfying.  Their size is nice and chunky, so you can pour a few into your hand and chomp away. They are great for adults and kids -- my kids LOVED them.

Will they replace my current licorice brand?  To be honest, they aren't a replacement so much as an addition to my snack arsenal.  The experience of this licorice is so unique, they are in a league of their own!  And we love that.

Find out where to buy the candy at the locator on their website.
